I tell you solemnly: unless a wheat of grain falls on the ground and dies, it remains only a single grain; but if it dies, it yields a rich harvest.” PARISH NEWSLETTER 18th March, 2018. Christ be with me.....Fifth Sunday of Lent. There are Cathedrals, Churches, Convents, Colleges, Clubs, Monasteries, Schools, Streets, Roads, Estates, Holy Wells and Football Teams that are all named after St. Patrick. Lough Derg, is often referred to as St. Patrick’s Purgatory and we have Croagh Patrick, named after the Saint himself!! Just as Mount Brandon in Kerry is called after St. Brendan and Skellig Mhichíl is called after St. Michael. We also have from St. Patrick two works: his Confessions, a spiritual autobiography, and a very angry Letter to the soldiers of the pirate Coroticus who had kidnapped and murdered some of Patrick’s Christians. In his Confessions we have a key to Patrick’s spirituality, what he calls the “desire of his life” which he wants others to know. He has fallen in love with God, he wanted nothing but what God wanted. God’s will was expressed for him in the very concrete terms of a mission in exile so nothing else mattered. People today are searching for spirituality. Some find a value and a meaning for their lives which continues to sustain them. Others try on spiritualities like new clothes and abandon them when they become tired of them. St. Patrick shows us a spirituality that is practical, yet profound and prayerful. He is loved, blessed and called by God and he responds. Croagh Patrick, his holy mountain has many lessons for us. We can see its majestic summit from a distance. But as we begin to climb, the summit vanishes and all we can see is the intervening slope. The summit is often clouded by mist and covered by fog. It is a difficult climb and demands determination to get to the top. St. Patrick can lead us to ascend life’s mountain where, like Moses, we meet the living God. St. Patrick died at Saul on Strangford Lough about 461. At Saul there is a grave reputed to be that of St. Patrick and also of St. Brigid and St. Columba ( also known as St. Columcille). The three saints are said to have been brought there by John De Courcy in the twelfth century, thereby fulfilling the old legend that they should be in the same place united together in death. PARISH NEWSLETTER

18th March, 2018.

Christ be with me.....Fifth Sunday of Lent.

There are Cathedrals, Churches, Convents, Colleges, Clubs, Monasteries, Schools,

Streets, Roads, Estates, Holy Wells and Football Teams that are all named after St.

Patrick. Lough Derg, is often referred to as St. Patrick’s Purgatory and we have Croagh

Patrick, named after the Saint himself!! Just as Mount Brandon in Kerry is called after

St. Brendan and Skellig Mhichíl is called after St. Michael. We also have from

St. Patrick two works: his Confessions, a spiritual autobiography, and a very angry

Letter to the soldiers of the pirate Coroticus who had kidnapped and murdered some of

Patrick’s Christians. In his Confessions we have a key to Patrick’s spirituality, what he

calls the “desire of his life” which he wants others to know.

He has fallen in love with God, he wanted nothing but what God wanted. God’s will

was expressed for him in the very concrete terms of a mission in exile – so nothing else

mattered. People today are searching for spirituality. Some find a value and a meaning

for their lives which continues to sustain them. Others try on spiritualities like new

clothes and abandon them when they become tired of them. St. Patrick shows us a

spirituality that is practical, yet profound and prayerful. He is loved, blessed and called

by God and he responds. Croagh Patrick, his holy mountain has many lessons for us.

We can see its majestic summit from a distance. But as we begin to climb, the summit

vanishes and all we can see is the intervening slope. The summit is often clouded by

mist and covered by fog. It is a difficult climb and demands determination to get to the

top. St. Patrick can lead us to ascend life’s mountain where, like Moses, we meet the

living God. St. Patrick died at Saul on Strangford Lough about 461. At Saul there is a

grave reputed to be that of St. Patrick and also of St. Brigid and St. Columba ( also

known as St. Columcille). The three saints are said to have been brought there by John

De Courcy in the twelfth century, thereby fulfilling the old legend that they should be in

the same place united together in death.

POPE FRANCIS …. FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF HIS ELECTION. Two of the best known images of Pope Francis are "the Church as a field hospital" and "spiritual

Alzheimers", a condition that renders some people incapable of remembering God's love and mercy

for them and unable then to show mercy to others. In his World Day Peace Message for 2018, Pope

Francis calls for compassion toward the 250 million refugees and migrants in the world. He serves the

Church with a Gospel Mercy that reflects the love of God for all people. It is regrettable that he is

harshly criticised by some people, even within the Church, whose much vaunted criticism and rigid

resistance to pastoral reforms is corrosive and negative. Pope Francis is the only voice that was raised

in concern for the persecuted Rohingya people who have been driven from their homeland and are

victims of genocide in Myanmar. Pope Francis embodies Christian love, mercy, forgiveness and an

abundance of sheer goodness. We thank God for his unique service and witness in our Church. May

we all remember to celebrate God's love and mercy in our lives and share it with one another in the

murky messiness that is the reality of our lives today. (John Cullen)
