FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Congratulations and Thanks

Congratulations to Dominic Feng and Olivia Pon, recipients of this year’s St. Therese College Scholarship Award. Dominic and Olivia have served our community so well as altar servers, cantors, and event volunteers. We are proud of them and wish them continued success in their respective colleges. Thanks to our Young Adults for a wonderful camping event. It was a beautiful day to connect with each other, to relax, and to celebrate the Eucharist together. Thanks to the Holy Name Society for another successful Car Show. Many of you worked so hard to make it possible. Special thanks to all sponsors, donors and volunteers. Thanks to the St. Rocco Society for an amazing celebration of the Feast of St. Rocco. St. Therese Church was beautifully decorated and packed for Mass. The procession on the streets in our neighborhood offered people a wonderful opportunity to pray and to interact with each other, even with strangers.

IT’S TIME FOR SCHOOL! It’s hard to believe, but school begins on Tuesday, August 27! Sorry, kids, vaca-tion is over. The first Family Mass at the St. Barbara Campus will take place at 9:30 am on Sunday, September 8th, followed by a Back to School Bash!

Peace Circle A Peace Circle is a way of bringing healing and creating deeper relationships for small groups. It is used in different institutions, including Churches. In the last few weeks, our new parish has looked into the possibility of having a Peace Circle for our parishioners. Thanks to Kim Casey who volunteered to lead the group and to all who signed up so far. We still have a few spot to be filled if you are interested to join. This past Tuesday, our staff had an experience of a Peace Circle. For many of us, it was the first time we par-ticipated in a Peace Circle. Thanks to Cathy Waltz and Fernando Reyes for leading us. It was a wonderful gift for us to be part of it. Two questions we shared are: who is one of the persons in your life who helped you to know God better? And how would you share your faith with others as missionary disciples? Many of them mentioned a family member or a priest or a religious Sister. Some of the values and qualities offered help us to be missionary disciples: listening, caring, empathizing, being merciful, persistence, presence, and kindness. These are good questions for us all to reflect and to pray about as we continue the Renew My Church journey. Being missionary disciples is our call from Jesus. Our new parish patron St. Mother Teresa is a powerful ex-ample. I would like to conclude by sharing the following wisdom from St. Mother Teresa:

People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered. Forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway. If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies. Succeed anyway. If you are honest and sincere, people may deceive you. Be honest and sincere anyway. What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight. Create anyway. If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous. Be happy anyway. The good you do today will often be forgotten. Do good anyway. Give the best you have and it will never be enough. Give your best anyway. In the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway.

Peace, Fr. Francis

“SEEK THE KINGDOM OF GOD” By Sister Caritas

Many times when I am teaching children, there is an ef-fort among the children to be first in line. Sometimes in the effort to be first, other children are almost knocked over. I had a system for getting in line so no one got hurt. Sometimes I would appoint a line leader for the week. Then there was no problem, as through the year everyone got a chance to be first. In the beliefs of the Jewish community, the Jews were the “chosen people”. This relates to Abraham and his de-scendants. WE know Jesus came to save all people. Je-sus is asked, “Are there many who are saved?” Jesus then reminds us that it is not an absolute sure thing that we are saved. We know personal choice, our beliefs, and how we live our life also come into our reaching the king-dom of heaven. Sometimes we are very concerned about being the most important, the most powerful in our work position. Sometimes in families one child will say, “Mother always loved you best.” This can exist even as adults. The real concern of Jesus about being first is whose life, whose heart is the most completely centered on God, completely turned toward God and His will. Will you make as much effort to be pleasing in the eyes of God as you do to please others or gain position in your job? Those who are so sure they are pleasing to God and will be in the king-dom of God may be mistaken. “The first may be last and the last first.”
