Paris PhotoParis photo was created in 1996 and is known to many as the most prestigious art fair in the world dealing with historical and contem-porary photography.Unlike the biannual Paris Photography Fair, it takes place each year and for the first time this year will also be moving to Los Angeles, USA, at the end of april 2013.This event is a staging ground for photographers, buyers and enthu-siasts to look at the works of artists like Elliott Erwitt, Henri Car-ti-Bresson, William Klein alongside contemporary photographers Louis Heilbronn, Guy Tillim, Jitka Hanzlova to name just a few.The event itself has been staged at the most glamorous of locations the Grand Palais near the Champs-Elysees, which in paris is where the most prestiges of showcases and has been used for 112 years for exhibitions.

My Opinion of The ShowAfter an three hour bus from Bristol to London and eight from London to Paris, I have to admit that saying I was a little tired and discombobulated would be a herculean understatement. So my girlfriend and I arrived at the Grand Palais to be told we have to wait in line for half an hour to get into the exhibition because the influential and affluent members of society have their own private viewing of the photography on show (because of course the show is focused on the consumer of art and photography not photographers per-say and with work from Walker Evans to Alec Soth fetching between €150,000- €220,000 altogether, they are the people you want looking at your work). However once through the doors I was bowled over by the sheer space and variety of images the show had to offer. Photography from every genre displayed for all to see.I immediately went and fetched a coffee to perk up and set about absorbing the images on display like a sponge.I did find during the six hours it took me to walk around (having to regrettably pass over some of the photos on display due to the sheer number throughout the Palace and limited time, this also does not include looking at the vast display of photo books on show) I found no coherent theme to the way the images were displayed throughout the exhibition. Each stool represented a different gallery from around the world, and each gallery for obvious reasons, wants to show the best set of images it has, which in my opinion, devalued the work on show and in some cases the same work was shown twice, Irving Penn’s portrait of Picasso and William Kliens photo of a young boy pointing a toy gun for example.Having said this the show came across a complete success. For me as a budding photographer its a great way to look to see the sort of work I will be compet-ing against in the future.

Paul GrahamGraham is a British photographer best known for his work in Britain during the Thatcher years of the mid-1980’s with his project ‘Beyond Caring’ where he traveled around the UK documenting unemployment offices. ‘The present’ which is his most recent project based in the US lifts two moments from the nev-er ending buzz of city life. Graham is showing that for every decisive moment another is just around the corner, or more specifically within the next frame a few seconds later.

Aperture Photobook AwardsPhotobooks. This year has a special emphasis on photography books as the fair launches its first Photobook Awards with a partnership from Aperture Foundation (Which is a not-for-profit organisation focused on bringing the photo community into contact with each other).Thirty books have been selected by an international jury which have been shown to the public at the fair. David Alan Harvey’s book ‘(based on a true story)’ was one of the ten books shortlisted for the award and in my opinion the most creative due to the fact that the viewer has control over the reading of the images by cropping and pasting two half ’s of one image at will. An incredible book and here is the link for a demonstration of how the book works; http://vimeo.com/42015234Harvey is a regular contributor to National Geographic (Last photos in National Geographic was October 2012).However the overall winner was David Galjaard ‘Concressco’ which is about above ground bunkers scattered across Albania which show “the struggles for security during the communist era” highlighting the efforts of the Albanian people and difficulty in fully understanding their national identity.

Photobooks.
