Nalco strengthens security measuresNalco has further strengthened its security measures in the

Bauxite Mines area located in Panchpatmali Hills of Koraput.

Security arrangements have also been augmented at most

vulnerable point i.e at Magazine House, where explosives

are stored. The deployment of CISF personnel has also been

increased from 89 to 197 jawans in the mines. Special

emphasis has been given to fortification of magazine area by

providing multi layers protection system, such as, chain link,

concertina barbed wire, power fencing and brick walls around

the magazine house at the mines.

As construction of a permanent barrack or any construction

in the vicinity of the magazine house is strictly prohibited,

the CISF jawans have been provided with well furnished rest

sheds, near the Magazine House, which are equipped withlighting system, wall mounted fan, exhaust fan, air coolerand vinyl flooring to improve the living conditions for jawansdeputed in duty to safeguard the explosives. Besides this, two new well furnished sheds with folded beds, with cushion, fans, lights with toilet has already been installed. These shedsare similar to the ones used by defence personnel.Uninterrupted power supply has also been provided to thesheds used by CISF jawans. Besides, aquaguard with coolingsystem has been installed to provide safe & clean drinkingwater to the jawans. The above measures have been reviewedand found to be satisfactory by the CISF authorities. However, permanents barrack in two blocks with all required facilitiesexists at a distance of 700 mtr from magazine house.

Explosives stock reduced at MinesIn addition to the above security arrangements, Nalco hasdecided to drastically reduce storage of explosives at themagazine house of its bauxite mines. As per the latest measure, the stock of explosive material such as booster-explosives,which was around 21.75 tonnes one month before the Naxalsattack, has now been reduced to 2.25 tonnes, while the stockof column explosives has been brought down from 10.12tonnes to 1.15 tonnes and that of ammonia nitrate from 3.95tonnes to only 0.70 tonnes. The stock-holding has beenreduced to one tenth overall.

The Company has decided to keep only 4 to 5 days' need instock of these explosive materials at the magazine house.Reduction in stockpile of explosivewill considerablyminimizethe threat perception for future.

Nalco is also exploring the possibilities of 'blast free' miningmethods, where there is no use of explosives. With thesemeasures,Nalcohopes to significantly reduce theNaxals threatand carry out its mining operations in a secure environment.

Green signal for Mines expansion projectThe Union Ministry of Environment and Forest has accordedenvironment clearance to Nalco for the expansion of bauxitemining at its Panchpatmali bauxite mines at Damanjodi inKoraput district of Orissa. Nalco had sought clearance forenhancing production of Bauxite from 63 lakh tonnes to 68.25lakh tonnes per annum to meet the additional requirement ofits Alumina Refinery. The Ministry had earlier grantedenvironment clearance to the 2ndphase expansionof this projectfor a production capacity of 63 lakh tonnes of bauxite involvinglease area of 2414.263 hectares.

It may be mentioned that, the Company had launched itsambitious 2nd phase expansion in October 2004 involving an investment of Rs.4400 crores, which has now reached the finalstage of commissioning. With the completion of all the projects, Nalco's bauxite mines capacity will increase from 48 lakhtonnes to 63.25 lakh tonnes, alumina refinery from 15.75 lakh tonnes to 21 lakh tonnes, aluminium capacity from 3.45 lakhtonnes to 4.60 lakh tonnes and power generation capacity from 960 MW to 1200 MW.

Panchpatmali Mines is considered to be a 'model' mining operation because of several modern features included in themining operation including efficient environment management. The overburden removed from the mining areas is properlybackfilled in mined areas and progressively afforested. So far, 3.62 lakh trees have been planted in the mined out areas ofPanchpatmali covering 142 hectares. The total cumulative plantation in the entire mines is 25 lakh trees. Besides, garlanddrains and check dams have been constructed around the mining area to prevent water run off and soil erosion.

Besides, regular water sprinkling is carried out in mining areas to control air pollution. Regular monitoring of ground waterquality is also being carried out by the Environment Department of the Panchpatmali Mines.

Nalco to invest Rs.11 crore on eco-projectsFour environment oriented projects proposed by Nalco under Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) have been cleared byUnion Ministry of Environment and Forests.

Nalco has taken up four numbers of CDM projects in its Smelter, CPP and Refinery units, wherein better technology wouldbe used to further reduce Green House Gas (GHG) emission. All these projects have been accorded consent by Ministry ofEnvironment and Forests, Govt of India in July 2009. The Company will make a total investment of Rs 11 crore in theseprojects.

Kyoto Protocol is a global cooperative attempt to address threat due to increasing growth of GHG emissions and per capitaGHG emission correlated with economic prosperity. The protocol encourages industries to earn Carbon credits throughmeasures taken to reduce green house gas emissions, and to be more environment friendly. United Nations FrameworkConvention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), located at Bonn, Germany, is the Executive Body for registration of such projectsfor availing benefits of carbon credits. Acceptance of Ministry of Environment and Forest is one of the requirements forregistration of CDM projects.

Besides, Nalco has taken steps for engagement of Designated Operational Entity, which will validate the CDM projects forsubmission to UNFCCC. Nalco can earn carbon credit through these CDM projects by reducing GHG, which can be sold ininternational markets. It may be mentioned that, Nalco is one of the few industries in India for taking such steps and amongthe pioneers in Orissa.

Hindalco net slips 31%Hindalco Industries Ltd, an Aditya Birla Group company, onFriday announced that its net profit during the first quarter endedJune 30,2009, decreased 31% to Rs 480.56 crore owing to fallin commodity prices. Net Sales for the quarter stood at Rs.3,899.49 crore, down 16.09% from Rs4, 647.53 crore in Q1FY09. Of total revenues of Rs.3899.49 crore, aluminium businesscontributed Rs.1421 crore, compared to Rs. 1943 crore inQ1FY09. Meanwhile, Hindalco has reached an agreement andreceived lenders' consent on revised terms including covenantrelaxations relating to $982 million bank loan.

Also, in view of the volatility in domestic market anddevelopments in the international markets, the company's boardhas decided that Hindalco could, in addition to offering ofshares under the QIP route, issue share under the GDR or anyother instrument or any combination thereof. But in any case, the total amount to be raised will be restricted to $500 million.Hindalco said that in aluminium, the de-growth reduced to17.7% this quarter against 21.3% in the previous quarter, withJune alone lowered by 13.08%. 'This may suggest that theslowdown is lifting off the trough' the company said. Demandsin development markets have also shown signs of growth on

quarter to quarter basis.

Aluminium prices gain 19% oninfrastructure spendThe economic stimulus packages announced by variouscountries with a thrust on infrastructure spending seem tohave boosted aluminium prices, which posted a quarterlygain for the first time in the last four quarters.

However, the huge stockpiles in the London Metal Exchange(LME) may cap any possibility of sharp spike in prices.

Aluminium prices have jumped 19.47 per cent in the secondquarter this year to $1,663 a tonne from $1,392 a tonne inthe first quarter. However, the gain was minuscule comparedwith the price of $3,136-$3,114 that prevailed betweenApril and June 2008.

Besides the stimulus packages, the large inventory build-upby China boosted aluminium prices.

The Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) accumulated8,82,600 tonnes in the second quarter, resulting in occasionaldeclines in LME monitored stockpiles.

The companies that will benefit from the rise in aluminiumprices include the Government-owned National AluminiumCompany and Vedanta Group companies, BharatAluminium Company and Madras Aluminium Company. With the raw material cost declining substantially, theIndian companies are set to post a good performance in thesecond quarter.

The average three-month forward price difference in theLME and the SHFE surged to $362 a tonne in May-June,with Shanghai being quoted at a premium. "China stockpiled28,657 tonnes of aluminium, an increase of almost 100per cent on a sequential basis.

One day we were in the return Bus from Mines. As usual theenvironment in bus was hilarious. Somebody raised a pointabout type of engines. i.e internal combustion, diesel or petroletc. I suggested coal engines in bus. Entire bus roared intolaughter. I tried to remember coal automotive engines havingread somewhere. I continued to argue that it was there before2nd world war. Some how, I could get one reluctant believer,Mr. Shankar a friend in need at that time inside the bus.

Next day in the return bus he revealed the real story of buses.Immediately after reaching the house he had sent an email tohis learned elder brother, who was kind enough to dispel thedoubts with a prompt answer. Here are the e-mails.

Respected Anna,Namaste. All are doingwell. My colleagueswere not believingthe existence of steam bus. They say buses started with ICengines only. My friends have agreed to believe your reply.Henceplease give details of STEAMBUS. I rememberU sayingabout steam buses of Chatrapur. A cleaner was appointed inOrissa for cleaning the coals from the bus. Pl. give details.

Dear Sankar,I am happy to tell you the history of Bus!There is a slight gap in communication or understanding aboutthe buses that were run during Second World War &subsequently for some more time. Those buses were run bycoal gas generated by heating charcoal in the bus itself. Ourfather was at Sambalpur & it was very interesting to know thatthese buses start at 6am at Meramandali & reach only at 6pmin the evening at Sambalpur. The cleanerwas to feed the boilerlike heater to generate coal gas, in the middle of the bus wherethe cleaner continuously feeds charcoal&blowsahandbloweragainst drivers shower of abuses (Gali .. ) to speed up!!

Even similar buses were run in between Berhampur &Chatrapur. Grandmother used to buy charcoal from thosecleaners. They were selling smaller sized ones in the name ofdust. (This was his income). Now it is obsolete in view ofavailability of natural gas in plenty. It is used in an internalcombustion engine only but fuel was coal gas generated onthe bus while in motion. If you need I can get more details

like the filters used before the gas is fed into engine. It wasnightmare for any body to travel by night in those buses. Bye- Anna

(It has been quite long since I left Mines and has joinedSmelter at Angul. While reachingAngul throughMeramandali,I remembered the above incident and had a hearty laugh. Iwish again to be inside MINES RETURN BUS.

The Good Old Days(Here is a piece of my invaluable experience in Mines. It willbe of great interest to people around us).

In Tamil Nal- Stands for 'Good 'and Co-Means 'King'

Hence Nalco imply' Good King

Most of us may not aware of the king's rule

What a good king's rule be? ,

Thus Good Kings Rule is a myth but Nalco is reality

Influenza - A H1N1 virus ( known as Swine Flu) has created panic amongpeople across the world.
