MIDDLE SCHOOL PARENTS - FYI We are passing along an article that Arrowhead shared with us that was in Waukesha School District’s newsletter. Juul and other companies are making sneaky e-cigarettes as small as guitar picks that don't even emit vapor... but let the kids inhale the nicotine. Unfortunately there is a crazy amount of vaping going on in our region, including AHS, and virtually EVERY student reports they started in middle school. https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2017/12/04/568273801/teenagers-embrace-juul-saying-its-discreet-enough-to-vape-in-class

MATH ACCELERATION Wednesday, February 28, is the deadline for a parent/guardian, teacher or other school district professional to request acceleration (grade skipping) in math by notifying Mrs. Schneider, the gifted and talented coordinator, in writing. Current kindergarten through sixth grade students, who are highly capable AND high performing students, are eligible to apply. Previously placed students do not need to reapply. Included with this written notification should be a rationale for why this is appropriate for the child. Once notification is received, a rigorous review process begins that incorporates data from student performance, standardized test results and teacher observation. Parents who have questions regarding this process should contact their child’s math/classroom teacher(s) or Mrs. Schneider.

Mae Carol Jemison is an American engineer, physician and NASA astronaut.

She became the first African American woman to travel in space when she

went into orbit aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour on September 12, 1992.

In 1960, Ruby Bridges was one of six

black children in New Orleans to pass

the test that determined whether

they could go to the all-white school,

William Frantz Elementary. Two of the

six decided to stay at their old school,

Ruby went to the school by herself, and the other three

children were transferred to McDonogh No. 19 and became

known as the McDonogh Three. At age 6, Ruby was

escorted to school by four federal marshals during the first year she attended William Frantz

Elementary. She founded the Ruby Bridges Foundation in 1999.

On April 15, 1947, Jackie Robinson was the first African

American to play in a Major League Baseball game for the

Brooklyn Dodgers. Robinson faced discrimination from players

and fans and rose above it. He went on to win Rookie of the

Year in 1947 as well as the National League MVP Award in

1949. Robinson's jersey number, 42, was retired by both the

National League and the American League in 1997, the 50th

anniversary of Robinson's historic major league debut. "Jackie

Robinson Day" started on April 15, 2004 and continues today

where every MLB player wears No. 42 on their team’s jersey.

Stevie Wonder has recorded more than 30 U.S. top ten hits, sold over 100 million records, and won

25 Grammy Awards(the most ever won by a solo artist) as well as a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Wonder was the first Motown artist and second

African-American musician to win an Academy Award

for Best Original Song, which he won for his 1984 hit

single "I Just Called to Say I Love You" from the movie

The Woman in Red. He has been inducted into both the

Rock and Roll and Songwriters halls of fame. American

music magazine Rolling Stone named him the ninth

greatest singer of all time. Wonder plays the piano,

synthesizer, harmonica, congas, drums, bongos, organ,

melodica and Clavinet.

Pardeep and Arno met in October of 2012 through Against Violent Extremism, a global coalition of Former violent extremists and Survivors of violent extremism. Since then they have become dear friends and brothers, working together via Serve 2 Unite to illustrate the concept of Chardi Kala, the Sikh practice of fearless gratitude in the face of adversity and relentless optimism. The experiences of a former violent extremist intertwined with those of a survivor of violent extremism reveal a very practical guide to cultivate a more peaceful life. Themes of kindness, courage, forgiveness, and personal responsibility are illuminated. Participants of this experience are challenged to explore their own narratives with open honesty, and engage with our common humanity, building a foundation for happiness and success.

Pardeep Kaleka is the eldest son of Satwant Singh Kaleka – the president of the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin, who was gunned down during the attack of August 5th, 2012 in Oak Creek, WI by a White Supremacist. Currently a trauma therapist and former Police Officer and teacher in the inner city of Milwaukee, Pardeep is no stranger to the never-ending battle against racism, violence, hatred, and ignorance. His firm belief is that the lamp of knowledge and truth will outshine all the darkness in the world, and he does his best to embody this through his work with with the organization he founded: Serve 2 Unite. Pardeep grew up in Milwaukee and graduated from Marquette University. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Arno Michaelis was a founding member of a racist skinhead organization , a reverend of a self-declared Racial Holy War, and lead singer of the hate-metal band Centurion, which sold 20,000 CDs by the mid-nineties and is still popular with racists today. Single parenthood, love for his daughter, and the forgiveness shown by people he once hated all helped to turn Arno's life around, bringing him to embrace diversity and practice gratitude for all life. Today Arno is a speaker, author of My Life After Hate, and very fortunate to be able to share his ongoing process of character development working with Serve 2 Unite. Both will be co-authoring their book, “ The Gifts of Our Wounds” out April 10.

will have a blast with our all new curriculum! We use a simple, relatable, block-based programming system called Scratch,

developed by the MIT Media Lab. This fun filled class stresses critical thinking, creativity, confidence, teamwork, and problem

solving skills to prepare them for the 21st century and beyond. Class topics include logic, loops, conditional expressions,

control statements, data structures and variables, and mathematical expressions, as well as artistic expression in drawing,

storytelling, and even music. Each student will receive an award on the last day of the session, and will have the opportunity

to earn Code Belts to demonstrate their learned skills!
