(one even has a real mini movie theater). Some are miles away.

Some are just steps away from the campus. Some rent to studentsonly. Some will rent to anyone. Some are for students on a budget

Yes, some people view our No Party Policy as a negative andfrankly, some students choose not to live here because of the policy,

says Ted Mehr, owner and developer of Sahara Apartments. Welook at Sahara Apartments as a sanctuary for students where they

can feel safe, secure and free from the usual commotion that goes

on in most student oriented apartment buildings. The kinds ofthings that can disturb a students sleep or study time. As a student-only property, we do not consider ourselves to be in the nightclub

business, or the bar and entertainment business. There are plentyof choices for those activities all around Tucson. We are a students

home away from home.

Sahara Apartments sponsors social events on a monthly basis.

These social activities are held both on and offsite. When they areoffsite, Saharas shuttle provides free transportation to the events and

brings the residents back. Residents can have their friends over andsocialize with them in the student lounge, entertain them

Safety is the number one thing parents are concerned about whentheir child moves away from home, says Ted Mehr. The concept

of Sahara was born out of my concern for my own daughters safetyas she was preparing for college. I wanted her to be in a safe and

comfortable living environment no matter where she lived. I simplyasked myself, what kind of place would I want my daughter to

live in for the times I could not be there to watch over her? SaharaApartments was my answer to that question.

The concern for safety and security is evident as you approach the

happened that could have been prevented, admits Ted Mehr.

Parents are the keystone to the suc-cess o the Parents & Family Association,says Mary Roney. Te PFA is a great

network to meet other parents in the UAcommunity and is the tie that binds ustogether to support the most important

needs o our students on campus.I elt so comortable knowing the

community was there or the whole am-ily, Mary said. It is hard to send yourchildren away to college, but satisying toknow that as a result o the parental sup-

it all. Arizonas rst-year mens basketballcoach was a playerin the Big East orPittsburgh, an as-sistant coach withstops in the Big enat Wisconsin andin the ACC at N.C.State. He was thena head coach in the

Atlantic 10 at Xavier.However, he needed

to come to ucson toexperience one morething.

It was not untilMiller took the reinso the Arizona mensbasketball programthat he saw the pow-er o ZonaZoo, Ari-zonas spirited student section. At 12,000members strong, ZonaZoo stretches endzone-to-end zone at home ootball gamesand lls nearly 4,000 seats at UA basketball

games.I look at our student section as the

best in the country, Miller said. Tere isno student section that impacts an arenamore than ZonaZoo impacts McKaleCenter.

Miller recognizes that a home basket-ball game means more than just a win orloss in the standings or his team, but italso serves as a gathering or the Univer-sity community and marks milestonesin students lives over the course o theircollege careers.

You identiy your time as a student ata university as what happened in that ouror ve-year window, and otentimes sportsare a big a big part o that experience,Miller said. Did the ootball team go toa bowl? How did your team do in rivalrygames? You think o the un weekendsand nights are associated with teams andsports.

Tis is not to say that Miller and theWildcats do not need the ans in thissymbiotic relationship. He appealed to UAans prior to the season, saying that hisinexperienced team with only one senioron the roster would need support morethan any other team ever to play in McK-ale. He later went out o his way to thankZonaZoo in his post-game press coner-ence ollowing UAs early-season victoryover Rice and contends that the student

section was critical in the Wildcats Pac-10win over Cal.

We want our ans to be hostile, andI mean that in a good way, Miller said,noting that sportsmanship is o the utmostimportance. Te louder it gets in thearena, it creates a sense that today ortonight is going to be hard (or a visitingteam), and theyre going to have to be attheir very best to beat us.

in the Eller College o Management placedrst in a competition to develop a peer

promotional plan or the Honda Insight,a hybrid electric vehicle, beating out 20other schools nationwide.

Te UA team was one o three nalists including Georgia State University andCaliornia State University, Fullerton to present to a panel o judges rom

American Honda Motor Company and adagency Ruben Postaer and Associates inLos Angeles, culminating a semester-long

project sponsored by EdVenture Partners.

Te students knocked it out o thepark, said Edward Ackerley, the teamsaculty adviser. Tey did a phenomenal

job o representing the marketingdepartment and the UA.

Five students rom AckerleysMKG 425 AdvertisingManagement class marketing seniors oddLane, Shiloh Miller, ChelseaRobinson, BrandonSchempp and Evan Singer traveled to Los Angeles to

present the results o theirpromotional campaign,which they developedand executed over the allsemester with a $2,500budget.

Te class takes a casestudy approach to helpstudents understand howadvertising works in themarketing mix, Ackerley said.

Trough an arrangement withEdVenture Partners, the students wereassigned to a project, in this case, to

students between 18 and 24 years oage. Te class ormed an ad agency

with a director and divisions includingoperations, public relations, creative,marketing and nance. Its completelysel-directed, Ackerley explained. I

started each class witha brie lecture and thenturned it over to EvanSinger, the agencysdirector, so that he couldmanage the ongoing

project.Tis was the rst year

that the UA participatedin an EdVenture projectthat concluded with anational competition. In

previous years, the UAsparticipation ended with apresentation to EdVenturerepresentatives.

the designated event date, says Singer.We want to do the extraordinary, so

we negotiated with Dobbs Honda andChapman Honda to get two more HondaInsights or our event. Tey used thecars to create what Ackerley called apromotion with commotion, whichincluded the UA mascot, Wilbur, the UAmarching band, games, giveaways andmore.

Te team also developed a Facebookcontest in which students were challengedto come up with a phrase using movietitles and no more than 140 charactersto explain why the Insight is cool. Te

winner was awarded $100. In all, Ackerleysaid, the students wrung an estimated$28,000 in value out o their $2,500 budget.

Tis program allows students to workon a project with real clients, real goals,real budgets and real outcomes, Ackerleysaid. Evan really summed it up best at thecompetition when he told the judges thatthe experience is one that the students willnever orget.

Math Placement: Using the Online TestBy Tina Schuster

Each major at the UA has a specicmath requirement. o register or a mathcourse at the UA, students must satisy theeligibility requirements or that course.High school curriculum and math SA or

AC scores are not used to place studentsinto UA math courses. Instead, students

must take the ALEKS online placementtest. All incoming reshmen must takethe ALEKS online placement test at leastone week prior to orientation. Students

with AP or other college level math creditshould still test, and then talk to a mathadvisor at orientation.

Te UA Math Placement est willbe available beginning May 1, 2010through August 22, 2010. Additionalinormation will be available throughthe math placement website athttp://math.arizona.edu/placement and

in the Online Academic our at http://www.em.arizona.edu/owa. For studentsparticipating in Freshman Orientation,there is no charge or the rst test, i takenby August 22, 2010.

UA parents and students are trying tosave money by using the new Connect byHertz car-sharing services, brought to cam-

pus by Parking & ransportation Services(PS).

Connect by Hertz, one o the industryleaders in car-sharing programs, has mem-bers worldwide who pay an annual ee o$50 and rent cars or as little as $8 an hour,

Living off Campus Next Year:

What to ConsiderThe chance that a student willlive off-campus sometime in

their college career is almost a

guarantee. There are a few things

to consider in helping find that

perfect place to call home.

Start Early: Begin searching at least 2months before your planned move-in date. If you are

looking at a place for the spring, try to have a lease

signed before winter break. Most properties willallow you to move in when you return in January.

Budget: What will your monthly expenses looklike? Include rent, utilities, groceries, transportation,

and entertainment expenses in your budget.

Roommates: Determine how manyroommates you would like and who they will be. It

is a great way to offset costs. Be careful of who you

choose for roommates as you may not really know a

person until you live with them.

Inspect the Condition: When you visit acomplex, ask to see the unit you will be renting, not a

model. Check areas such as appliances, doors, lights,

faucets, storage spaces, and other areas. If you want

the apartment only under the conditions that there are

repairs, get a written agreement from your landlord that

includes dates of completion.

Inspect for Security: Inspect the outsideof the complex to check for adequate lighting in parking

lots and other areas. Ask about security measures on

the property and if any incidents have occurred recently.

Also, inspect the unit to make sure all of the windows

and doors lock properly and there is a peep hole in the

front door.

Deposits: Be prepared to put down a deposit,as most properties require one. It is usually the first

months rent. Most utilities also require a deposit for

new services.

Pets: If you own or want a pet, know the policiesof the housing provider before signing a lease. Some

places allow only certain types of pets while others do

not even allow them.
