Angry Parents
“When you ask kids who play sports at different levels, “What do you want
your parents to do?” The overwhelming majority say. “Nothing.” Parents need to be a silent source of
encouragement.”
“Even yelling things like “You can do it.” adds pressure. Especially with the youngest kids. They don’t need that. They know you’re there and that’s
enough.”
“Only 1% of kids will make it to the next level [college, pro sports]. Let’s
focus on the 99%. With kids and sports building character is the goal.”
Angry Parents
At the English Premier League Academies parents on the touchline can only applaud - not criticize.
Hooligan Children
Let the Game teach“If parents want to help their children become better soccer players, they can offer to kick the ball around with them in the backyard. But sideline instructions deny children a chance to make their own decisions, it stifles their creative instincts, and all too often the instructions are misguided.”
- Mike Woitalla
“But does screaming at a child while you’re assisting them with math homework help. Very doubtful and certainly children should be allowed to play soccer without getting yelled at. Then they’ll be able to pay attention to the best teacher of all - the game itself.”
Approach
Winning is the aim, not the goalRotation of players with a planIf leading by 3 goals or more, ease off! Communicate with ref, Assistant Ref and Coaches
in respectful manner
Have a sub plan so players know in advance and you can focus on the game
Don’t over coach – let the game teachObserve players
4. A Few Rules
How much of the ball must cross the line before
the ball is out of play or a goal is given? Quarter, Half, Three quarters, All
How do you know if the ref has given an indirect or direct free kick?
How do you know if the ref has given a direct or indirect free kick?
And Why Does it Matter?
What is the refs decision if the goalie handles the ball outside their area?
Consider five characteristics (in order) to determine if it is an offense:
1.Making yourself bigger (taking away a passing or shooting lane)
2.Is the hand/arm in an unnatural position?
3.Did the player benefit?
If still uncertain, consider two additional criteria:
4.Reaction time
5.Hand/arm to ball
5. SummaryGet close to the parents (know names & their kids)Have a briefing session before and after KO and games with parents.Plan each practice (check list)Set Goals for the season (Have one skill per player to focus on for improvement)Have parents and team watch soccer on TV or YouTube
