Demystifying Assessment in VCE/VET

• Assessment in VCE are Assessment tasks in year 11 and SAC’s (School Assessed Coursework) in year 12

• SAC’s contribute to your students final study score in a subject• Students find SAC’s stressful due to this• Study scores combine together to determine ATAR scores• ATAR- Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank• Used for direct university entry however not the only way

Page 9: Parents and Carers as Partners - milsen.vic.edu.aumilsen.vic.edu.au/resources/2020/Parents_as_partners_2020.pdf · Parents plan a vital role in helping students manage time, manage

Mildura Senior College - Respect. Resilience. Responsibility. Independence. Success.

Demystifying Assessment in VCE/VET

How is the ATAR calculated?• VTAC uses VCE results issued by the VCAA (Victorian Curriculum and

Assessment Authority) to calculate the ATAR.• The ATAR is developed from an aggregate produced by adding:

• VTAC scaled study score in one of English, English Language, Literature or English as an Additional Language (EAL)

• The next best three VTAC scaled study scores permissible; and• 10% of the fifth and sixth permissible scores that are available• If the fifth and/or sixth subject is an unscored VET subject, these will

contribute as 10% of the lowest study score of the primary four

Parents plan a vital role in helping students manage time, manage energy and manage stress

Regular planned times for study throughout the year creates better results.

Short regular times of study ideally 20 minutes never longer that 50 minutes with a 10 minute break between sessions

Feeling down, tense, angry, anxious or moody are normal emotions for young people. If these feelings persist for long periods of time, or interfere with day-to-day life, it might be part of a mental health problem which requires further investigation.

Parents can be mindful of these 8 key ‘warning signs’ which may suggest a young person is experiencing a mental health problem.

Catastrophic Thinking

• Reassure your student • Anything you say may be heard as the wrong thing• What you do is more important than what you say hugs nice meal etc• Some students may ‘freeze up with fear’ avoid long debates just keep

them feed, rested and safe

direction to make sure the study gets done and Parents can support with this.

• Discuss with your student about minimising distractions-excessive social media use, listening to music and chatting to friends online does not help with study. This means that study will take longer than if you are focusing on one task.

• Keep yourself informed attend information sessions and parent-teacher meetings as a stressed student does not always store this important information.

• Meltdowns don’t need a long motivational speech rather think about what your student needs –FOOD, REST, EXERCISE, SOCIAL TIME
