ST MARY’S PARENT LOUNGE PORTAL: https://203smnr.rok.catholic.edu.au/parentlounge

Dear Parents

So much is happening over the coming days!

Last Thursday we welcomed almost all of our new Preps for 2018

to prep orientation. Many thanks to:

our staff, who organized the day and presented; to Ms

Bernadette Hanley from our Diocesan office, who intro-

duced new parents to Parent Lounge and to Linda Sand-

er, Beverley and Brad Schimke , who gave insight into the

workings of our P&F, sold washer packs and helped to

clean up.

Many thanks to all parents and staff who helped out during the

recent touch football season. It was wonderful to see so many

players and supporters under the St Mary’s banner enjoying the

grand finals on the weekend. Many thanks to Mrs Julia Diehm and

her small band of coordinators for their time and effort spent organ-

izing teams, uniforms and coaches. Well done!

We learnt over the weekend that Fr Matthew Moloney has been

transferred early in the new year to the Capricorn Coast parishes.

Fr Matthew told us that there were now only six Diocesan priests in

our entire Diocese that stretches from Bundaberg to Mackay and

west to the border! Fortunately, we have our missionary priests

from India to serve our communities.

Fr Matthew has been a significant presence in our school commu-

nity. We thank him for his leadership and genuine concern for our

community. We look forward to working with Fr Marcel Kujur, who

takes up his new appointment to the Northside Catholic Community

in early January.

Thank you in advance to all those involved in running the St Mary’s

Parish Christmas Fair. Thank you to our parish and parent volun-

teers who will run the stalls on Friday night, to the convenors who

have been organizing throughout the year and to those who simply

come along on the night and enjoy the fair. Your contributions com-

bine to make a great night out.

In next week’s newsletter, we will publish the names of class teach-

ers for 2018. Reports will be available on Parent Lounge later in

Week 9 and class lists for 2018 will be emailed to parents early in

the first week of holidays.

Special thanks to Mrs Heidi Mutch who has offered to coordinate

our Breakfast Club in 2018.

HOW DO YOU USE YOUR TALENTS? I love Sunday’s gospel reading from Matthew’s Gospel and it’s a great one to talk about with your children. Jesus, as he so often did, used a story to teach his followers about His Kingdom. He compared it to a farmer who went away leaving three servants in charge of his business. He gave each servant a varying quantity of money (ironically called ‘talents’ in Jesus’ day). The servants each chose to use their money differently, ranging from locking it away for safe keep-ing to using the money to make more thus making his employer wealthier. God has gifted each of us and our children with talents, some more than others and in great variety. The important thing to consider however is not what we received but rather what we are doing with those talents in our daily lives. Are we locking them away to keep them ‘safe’? Or are we out in the world using our talents, whatever they may be, to make the world a better place and God’s Kingdom richer? Yours in putting our talents ‘out there’. Chris Murphy, APRE PS. Why not take a minute this week to chat with your children, helping them to identify their talents and gifts and how they might use them for the benefit of those around them?

LETTERS TO SANTA Australia Post’s Santa Mail program is running again this year. It provides a wonderful opportunity for lower primary students to prac-tise their letter writing skills by writing a letter to Santa. Each student who writes a letter via Santa Mail, and provides an Australian return address, will receive a special reply from Santa. For more infor-

mation, please go to auspost.com.au/education/santamail PARENTING IDEAS The topic for this week is… How to encourage your kids to be problem solvers - When parents solve all children’s problems we not only increase their dependency on adults but we teach kids to be afraid of making mistakes and to blame themselves for not being good enough. That’s fertile ground for anxiety and depressive ill-ness. So, how can we raise kids to be courageous problem-solvers rather than self-critical scaredy cats? Click here to read more. REBEL SPORT (AMART SPORTS) Thank you to all who have participated this year in nominating St Mary’s when making a purchase from Rebel (Amart) Sports . Our school earns 5% of your purchases as in-store credit to spend on sports equipment. We have received over $2000 to spend this year for our school. Please remember to let other family members know so that they too can nominate St Mary’s as this directly bene-fits our students. CLASS NEWS FROM YEAR 1M Year One in almost over and we are busy making sure we are ready for Year 2! In Religion we have been learning all about our Church family – the people who belong to it and the jobs we can do as members of our Church family. We are also preparing ourselves for the special event where we celebrate the birth of Jesus – CHRISTMAS! We are practising our number facts a LOT so that we can do them quickly and accurately. There are lots of strategies we can use and this week our teachers are trying to trick us by mixing up addition and subtraction facts. In Year 1M we love reading and we practise us-ing our strategies whenever we can, especially comprehension be-cause we know understanding what we are reading is very im-

portant. This term we have written information reports – it’s fun or-ganising what we know into a report. Now we are writing narratives and using our Six Strategies for Writing to make sure our narratives are entertaining for the readers. During HASS and Science lessons we have been investigating our environment and how we use it re-sponsibly. Visual Arts and Media Arts are our focus in The Arts this term – lots of fun! And … we are almost ready for our performance of the Nativity play which we will present to you all next Monday, November 27, at the Christmas Concert. We hope you can all come!

APRE NEWS - Term 4 Week 8 Mrs Chris Murphy—APRE (Assistant Principal - Religious Education) ASSEMBLY This week on Friday, November 24, We will have our last general assembly of the year. Next week on Wednesday, November 29, Fr Matthew will celebrate our End Of Year School Mass in Coolock Court at 12.00pm. Please mark this special event on your calendar. PARISH CHILDREN’S MASS Thank you to the wonderful children who read the scripture and sang in the choir at our monthly Children’s Mass on Sunday. Thank you also to their parents who brought them along.
