HEADLINE NOTICES ARTiculation Final
Friday 15th February 2019
The Art department is very proud to announce that Lottie Simpson
in Year 12 is representing Kingsdale at the
London ARTiculation competition Final
at the National Gallery on Friday 15th
February 2019, 1:30 – 4:30pm. The
competition will be adjudicated by Tonya
Nelson, the Director of Museums and
Cultural Programmes at University College
London. The ARTiculation Prize is an annual public speaking
competition for students aged between 16 and 19. Students deliver
10 minute presentations on a work of art, architecture or an artefact of
their choice in front of an audience and an adjudicator. Adjudicators
are leading arts and media professionals who question each speaker
and select one competitor to go through to the Grand Final, to be
held at Clare College at the University of Cambridge on 1st March
2019. Students & parents are invited to come and support Lottie at
this very prestigious event. If interested, please contact Ms Montero
via art&[email protected]
Student Attendance Expectations
Thank you to parents for supporting the culture of high
---------------student attendance at Kingsdale, especially on these dark
---------------winter mornings. Please be reminded that we only regard
---------------attendance above 97% as high, as educational research -
---------------has proven that even missing as little as 5% of teaching
seriously affects outcomes for students. A reminder that any absences
must be reported to the school by 8:30am on the day of absence. The
easiest way of doing this is by downloading the MyEd school app via
https://www.myedschoolapp.com
which will also remind you of upcoming important dates.
---------Travelling To and From School Safely
In light of a number of high profile incidences of
-----------------anti-social behavior towards students from a range of -
-----------------schools in the local area, we are asking parents to ------
-----------------discuss with their children how to stay safe when -------
-----------------travelling to and from school. This includes ensuring ---
-----------------that electronic items are not openly on display and dark
& poorly lit areas are avoided.
Students should report any concerns to their Head of Learning as soon
as possible or call the Police in an emergency using 999.

London Schools’ Cross Country Championships
The Key Stage 3 & 4 Cross Country
teams had an important competition
last week in the London Schools’ Cross
Country Championships at Wormwood
Scrubs. Well done to all of the
students who participated so
well. A particular well done
to Theo Gaymes (Year 8) & Guy
Barnett (Year 8), Ben & Jacob
Harrison (Year 10) and Katie Balme
(Year 13) who all qualified to
represent Southwark and Kingsdale for
the English Schools’ Championships
to be held in Leeds later this term!
Under-14s Boys Basketball
In preparation for their London Youth Games 2nd Round
fixture next week, Kingsdale Under-14s Boys’ Basketball
Team took on Charter East Dulwich in a competitive friendly
on 1st February. After a difficult first quarter, Kingsdale
pulled back a significant
deficit with some excellent
three point shooting in the
third quarter and came away
comfortable winners with a
24-14 score. The team
demonstrated excellent
problem solving skills to overcome a zone defence, passed the
ball extremely well in the second half and defended even
better to close out the game. Top scorers were Kai
Drummond (Year 9) with 8 points and Rodrigo Saucedo
(Year 9) with 6 points. Well done boys!
Book of the Week Recommended by teachers, librarians, pupils and parents
Book Title: Caroline
Author: Neil Gaiman
Age Range: 12+
Why students should read it:
The day after they moved in,
Coraline went exploring....
In Coraline's new flat are
twenty-one windows and fourteen
doors. Thirteen of the doors open
and close. The fourteenth is locked,
and on the other side is only a brick wall, until the day Coraline
unlocks the door to find a passage to another flat in another
house just like her own.
Only it's different.
At first, things seem marvelous in the other flat. The food is
better. The toy box is filled with wind-up angels that flutter
around the bedroom, books whose pictures writhe and crawl
and shimmer & little dinosaur skulls that chatter their teeth. But
there's ‘another mother’, and ‘another father’, and they want
Coraline to stay with them and be their little girl. They want to
change her and never let her go.
Other children are trapped there as well, lost souls behind the
mirrors. Coraline is their only hope of rescue. She will have to
fight with all her wits and all the tools she can find if she is to
save the lost children, her ordinary life, and herself.
Critically acclaimed and award-winning author Neil Gaiman will
delight readers with his first novel for all ages.

stereotypes and liberate their creativity!
They can escape the chains of society, school or social media
and liberate the world from war, injustice, racism or poverty.
They are the one who decides what to
write about! Please encourage them to bring their poems on
any theme, any length and of any style to one of the
librarians! The project is open to all year groups.

HOUSE NEWS
To help raise the profile and awareness of being safe
online, the Kingsdale Community were engaged in a
range of different activities taking place in lessons, at
lunchtime and also assemblies for this year’s Safer
Internet Day which took place on Tuesday 5th
February 2019. Activities included students writing
‘pledges’ on how to abide by the guidelines which
govern usage of the Internet. The Year 10 Assembly
was delivered by one of the tutor groups and
focused on the whole issue around ‘consent’. The
week provided more opportunities to use the Safer
Internet Day 2019 national campaign to highlight
the positives of using new technologies, but also to
place a large emphasis on staying safe online. This
year’s campaign theme was ‘OUR INTERNET, OUR
CHOICE’; a pledge to make the internet a safe
environment to work within. For more information
