HOUSEHOLD BEATS

Listen very carefully, and think about the sounds you hear. Can these sounds be turned into music? Look for sounds that make a rhythm, like a ticking clock, traffic going by, a particularly loud staircase, or a door opening and closing.

You can make the sounds yourself, like knocking on a door, or catch them as they go by, like cars on the street.

Record the sounds and hum a tune over it. Try and sing a whole song over therhythm you’ve found!

When Leah’s music player broke, Shimmer, Shineand Leah made their own music! Music is made upof any different parts, from the melody to the beat.

Using Chrome Music Lab, listen to each note and try to recreate the melody of the ‘Boom Zarahmay’ section from The Genie Song.

MAGIC SYMBOLS

Try assigning different symbols to a few sounds - for example, a triangle represents a clap, a circle represents a stomp and so on! You can even use more interesting images like a genie bottle or a magic wand.

Draw the symbols on colored paper and cut them out. Put some blu-tack on the back of your symbols so you can move them around and stick them on a wall or wardrobe.

Think of a fun melody and arrange your symbols to go with your tune.You can move your symbols whenever you want to make a new beat!

Take a photo of your symbols and ask a parent to help share it online along with a legend explaining what each symbol means. Get your friends to take videos of themselves playing your beat and inventing their own!

Lyrics are really important when it comes to writing songs. Shimmer, Shine and Leah sing about their experiences and their friendship.

Over the next few days, try keeping a journal. Write down what you do, learn, and feel. When you’re happy with what you have, listen to a karaoke version of your favorite song, and instead of singing the lyrics of the song, sing the words from your journal.

You can try making up your own melody too!
