COMPETENCY BASED GRADES COMPETENCY BASED GRADES for Formal Assessmentsfor Formal Assessments
We have a number of video sign projects in this course.60% of the grade is competency based.Either a student meets standards or he doesn’t. If a student attends class regularly, signs with all the in
class activities and does all his work; I can guarantee he will meet standards.
So what if he doesn’t meet standards? Then grade will be an INC and he can re-do the project as
many times as needed until he can meet standards.I allow retakes on written test only after all assignments/labs
for that specific unit and the test review are completely done.

Video LabsVideo Labs• There are a number of video labs (workbook).n
Especially in ASL 1.• Students will self grade right away in class. This will
allow for each student to see how much they know and what they need to practice more.
• These labs are entered in the grade book as Yes they did it or No they did not.
• They are not docked if they did not get all the answers right. This is a learning tool.
• Students are expected to make up missed labs right away since they are very important for developing visual understanding.
Deaf Community ConnectionsDeaf Community Connections
• Throughout the semester there will be various events and activities outside of the classroom for students to participate in.
• The goal is to get them involved with our local Deaf community.
• This is a semester long project. • Students need to accumulate 100 points per
semester. • I have already handed out the list of options and the
point value for each.• It can also be found on-line on the ASL class
website.
