BishoP montgomery high school
may 2014Parent newsletter
5430 Torrance Boulevard Torrance, California 90503(310) 540 - 2021 www.bmhs-la.org Dear Parents,
I’m always surprised when I look at the school calendar and realize that we are in the month of May! The 2013-2014 school year is quickly drawing to a close—and the seniors, as usual, are counting the days. I pray for all of you in a special way at this time of the year, especially our senior parents. I know you all look at your children at this moment of transition and see all at once the young man or woman of today, the echo of the child that once was, and the promise of what he or she will become in the future. This is a bittersweet time—it is for me too.
Before we look ahead to the events of May, we have a few congratulations and thanks to offer. First, to all of our students who were honored at the Undergraduate Awards on April 1st. Eric Robinson was the featured speaker and he was wonderful. Congratulations to our Students of the Semester for the fall of 2013:
Class of 2017: Mikaela Frichtel and Nicolas SimoneClass of 2016: Carolyn Egekeze, David MacaraegClass of 2015: Jazmine Franco, Samantha Nishimura, Spencer HigginsClass of 2016: Caitlyn Cho, Madison Miller, Travis Talcott
Congratulations as well to Coach Bridgette Reyes and our Girls’ Basketball Team, CIF Champions and Coach Doug Mitchell and our Boys’ Basketball Team, Division IV State Champions!
And thank you to Father Richard Sunwoo for coming to Bishop Montgomery on Wednesdays to serve as our Chaplain.
The following are important dates to note in May:• May 1st, Thursday, May Crowning and Senior Mothers’ Mass, 8:00 a.m.• May 2nd, Friday, Senior Ditch Day; Prom at the Biltmore• May 5th, Monday, Faculty Meeting, 8:45 a.m. start• May 6th, Tuesday, AP Exams Begin• May 11th, Sunday, Mothers’ Day• May 14th, Wednesday, Teachers’ Appreciation Day• May 22nd, Thursday, Baccalaureate Mass at American Martyrs Church, 7:00 p.m.• May 23rd, Friday, Student Holiday• May 26th, Monday, Memorial Day, School Holiday• May 28th, Wednesday, all day, Senior Disney Event• May 29th, Thursday, Senior Awards, 10:00 a.m.• May 30th, Friday, Graduation, Knight Stadium, 11:30 a.m.
Thursday, May 1st, is our May Crowning Mass when we celebrate Mary, Jesus’ Mother, and honor our seniors’ mothers who will be our guests. The Mass will be offered for the intentions of all of our Bishop Montgomery mothers. This is always a particularly special Mass, our last opportunity as the 2013-2014 school community to join in prayer and celebration before our seniors leave us. I hope many of our seniors’ mothers will be present, but if you cannot attend, please join us in prayer.
Please keep our seniors, Class of 2014, in your prayers during their last few weeks as

students at Bishop Montgomery. We pray that they fully enjoy every graduation event, that they each make good decisions and that they remain safe. During the senior assembly, the administrators met with the class and emphasized the importance of safety as well as following parental and school rules and directives. Please be aware that Bishop Montgomery does not support, sponsor, or supervise any gatherings, trips, or parties that are not listed on the school calendar. It is important for your protection to note that any parties you may choose to host for a group of students at your home encumber you with the liability for those students’ safety both during the party and after they leave your home. There are so many choices for our seniors during these many events and we want to do everything we can to support their good decisions and their well-being. Life is fragile and we know that when we are young and feel invincible we don’t always remember that.
Finally, thank you, parents, for your support and for your children. You, the students, the faculty, and the staff are a daily cause of thanksgiving in my life. As we approach the end of the school year, I offer this prayer for you—one that I offer for you at the end of each year with the hope that you will come to understand and experience the depth of God’s unconditional love.
I pray that Christ will be more and more at home in your hearts,Living within you as you trust in Him.
May your roots go down deep into the soil of God’s marvelous love; And may you be able to feel and understand…..
How long, how wide, how deep and how high His love really is;And to experience this love for yourselves.
Though it is so great that you will never see the end of it or fully understand it.And so at last you will be filled up with God Himself.
Ephesians 3:17-19
Have a wonderful summer!

GRADUATION 2014
Graduation for the Class of 2014 will be held on Friday, May 30 in Knight Stadium. Admission to the ceremony will be by ticket only, and each graduating senior will receive seven tickets. These tickets will be distributed at graduation practice in May.
All seniors should have turned in their graduation orders, including cap and gown size, to the Jostens representative who was on campus last week. If your senior did not turn in his/her order, contact Dione Dierks at [email protected] immediately. Orders received past Jostens deadline could result in a senior not receiving his/her cap and gown in time for the graduation ceremony.
Questions? Please email Dione Dierks at [email protected].
With the school year quickly drawing to a close, we are now preparing for the Senior Awards Ceremony. The event will be held Thursday, May 29th at 10:00am. Student and parent invitations will be distributed and mailed, respectively, during May.
For students taking AP exams during May, I want to reiterate the College Board’s policy regarding cell phones and other electronic communication devices. These items should not be brought into the testing location at all. Having the cell phone or other items turned off and stored in a backpack or pocket is not acceptable. These items should either be left at home or secured in the student’s locker.
If the device is brought into the testing location, it should be turned over to the proctor with an affixed label. However, we do not want our proctors to spend valuable exam time collecting and returning these often expensive personal items. Please remind your child of these provisions and we will do the same.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
Casey DunnGuidance/Studies Coordinator

From the Discipline Office...
Prom Time. Prom is just around the corner. As a reminder, “the school does not permit the renting of hotel rooms or other facilities for students’ use for activities pre- or post- Bishop Montgomery dances. The renting of “party-busses” is also prohibited.... The school does not assume responsibility or liability for damages, loss of property, or injury caused when such rental agreements are incurred by students or their parents.” (Parent-Student Handbook, pg. 20).
Please adhere to the following dress code for the prom, and do not assume any liberties with these guidelines when you, or an invited guest, purchase dress attire for the event. All non-BMHS guests are required to conform to these guidelines. Anyone not adhering to the guidelines will not be permitted to enter the dance, and will be sent home. If you are asked to leave the Prom, the bid money will not be refunded, and may result in disciplinary action from the Deans. BMHS reserves the right to refuse admittance to any person not properly attired.
Gentlemen-Required to wear tuxes or suits.Ties are required unless dress shirts with a mandarin collar are worn. Dress shoes are required.MAY NOT WEAR earrings, sunglasses, hats, gloves, nor may they carry canes.
Ladies-May wear two pairs of earrings in the lower lobe, buy may not wear sunglasses.Fitted dresses may not be excessively tight. Dresses should be comfortable for dancing and sitting. The slit on the dress may not exceed two inches above the knee. The length of the dress must be floor length. Sleeveless and strapless dresses are permitted, provided that the bodice appropriately covers the chest and back. Backless dresses are NOT PERMITTED and MAY NOT fall below mid-back. Dresses MAY NOT show a bare midriff or contain cutouts, which expose the torso (front or back). Ladies are reminded that the display of excessive cleavage is inappropriate and unbecoming. Additionally, the dress material which covers the chest to knee area must be opaque, not transparent (mesh or chiffon style material is NOT PERMITTED in this area).Just a reminder that the hotel requires that shoes remain on at all times while on the premises. Students attire should be appropriate, modest, and in good taste. Freshmen MAY NOT attend the Prom.
Detentions: Detentions are to be served on or before the date indicated on the violation or referral slip. It is the responsibility of the student to make alternate arrangements for transportation if a detention is to be served. Disregard for assigned detentions may result in probation and detentions take precedence over sports’ practices and school activities (Parent-Student Handbook, page 13). Seniors must serve outstanding detentions prior to the prom.
Trips: Bishop Montgomery does not sponsor, condone, nor accept responsibility for trips, cruises, excursions not sanctioned by the school. There may be a current trip that may be disguised as a Bishop Montgomery “Senior Trip.” BMHS has nothing to do with organizing, sponsoring, or chaperoning any Senior trips. Any student distributing fliers that advertise these trips will be reprimanded. (Parent-Student Handbook, pg 20)
Graduation Parking: Please refrain from parking at the Little Company of Mary Parking Lot across the street and the parking lots of the neighboring businesses the day of the graduation. Vehicles parked in these parking lots are subject to being towed and the owners of those vehicles may be subjected to fines by the City of Torrance. Your cooperation will be appreciated by the community.

Picking-up and Dropping-off Off-Campus:All parents should pick-up and drop-off their students on-campus. To avoid the last minute rush, we encourage you to arrive before 7:30AM. The traffic flow on Torrance Blvd. is heavier after this time and may affect how quickly you are able to exit the campus. If you decide to pick-up or drop-off your students anywhere else, please refrain from picking up or dropping off your students at our neighboring businesses or residential driveways as this creates an inconvenience for our neighbors. Please respect the property of our neighbors by refraining from moving trashcans, taking property, littering, or parking or pulling into our neighbors’ driveways. Also, please make sure to drop-off your students in areas that are safe and legal. We have received many reports that there have been BMHS parents or carpools driving recklessly on Palos Verdes Boulevard and students are being dropped-off by their parents/carpool drivers illegally by the red curb zones, in front of fire hydrants or in the middle of the street. In the interest of the safety of all pedestrians and drivers and as a courtesy to our neighbors, students should be dropped-off on campus. Students whose parents fail to comply with the pick-up and drop-off procedures will be dealt with on campus. The Torrance Police Department has also been contacted and they have informed us that they will be citing drivers along Torrance Boulevard, Henrietta and Palos Verdes Boulevard. It is essential to give our neighbors the same respect and courtesy that we expect from each other on campus.
Use of CellphoneAs a reminder, using the cellphone or any hand-held device is prohibited by law while driving. It is also important to remind your child of the importance of paying attention to their immediate surroundings when using their cellphone while walking or waiting to be picked up. Students should only use their cellphone when it is safe to do so.

Queen of Angels Tuition Assistance Fund We would like to thank all of you who have made a gift to the Queen of Angels Tuition Assistance Fund. Since the fund was created in February 2012, over $310,000 has been raised for this important tuition assistance program. Each gift to this fund, no matter the size, directly (and immediately) helps a Bishop Montgomery student. Our total goal is to raise $600,000 for this fund. If you have not made a gift to the Queen of Angels Fund, please know that donations are accepted throughout the year and that every gift to BMHS is tax-deductible. Again this year, we are asking for a contribution of $50-$100, but if you are able to contribute a smaller or a larger amount, please know that we will be grateful for whatever amount you choose to send. Each amount, large or small, is a gift and will make a difference in a student’s life. You can mail your contribution to the school or contribute directly through our website (click on the “Give Now” button on the home page), whatever is most convenient. It is our goal to have 100% participation from you, our parents. Once again, thank you for your generosity and for your support of Bishop Montgomery High School.

The BMHS Music Department is divided into three areas:
Music Production: Offered during the school day, and fulfills UC-F Fine Arts requirement. Students learn how to set up and use a recording studio, mixing board, and pa systems; how to read & write music; and how to play piano, guitar, bass, and drums.

As you know the months of October and May are set aside to honor Mary, Mother of God. May we begin this month of May asking Mary to guide us, so like her, we will strive to “magnify the Lord” by our actions, seeking “God’s will.” May 1st begins with our May Crowning Mass and our celebration of Mothers’ Day. It is also our senior farewell mass. The mothers, especially of the seniors, are most welcome to join us for this Eucharistic celebration at 8:15AM. Just a reminder to all juniors and seniors for next year 2014-2015, permission slips for both junior Emmaus retreat and senior Kairos retreat are available the first days of school. It is important that your children sign up for retreats within the first month or two of school. Spots for these retreats fill up and sign up is on a first come first serve basis. Also I must book retreats accordingly and would like to know how many are interested in retreats. Thank you in advance for planning ahead. May Mary’s love and protection be upon you and your families! This month of May our morning prayer will be praying a decat of the rosary each morning. Please join us in the chapel at 7:45. All are welcome.

• Some of the Technology Committee members went to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles Technology Vendor Fair held at St. Brendan’s Catholic School. At the fair, we were able to see what innovations in technology are available for our schools.
The Yearbook distribution will be on May 15 at lunch for all grade levels. Please check the pre-order list posted at the Student Store to see if you have pre-ordered a yearbook. All students will be required to bring their student ID to re-ceive their yearbook.
