Dear AHS Families, With the release of the state report card on Thursday, I’m pleased to report that once again, AHS scored among the top high schools in the state. Our reading, writing, and math scores all went up and we performed better than our comparison schools in all measures such as SAT, Graduation, College Enrollment, and 9th Graders on track to graduate. Based on actual student performance, AHS should have earned rankings of “Level 4” and “Above Average,” in the top third of comparison schools.
Why then did the state of Oregon publish a Level 3-Below Average rating? The answer lies in a technicality. Federal guidelines drop schools an entire level if they do not meet participation targets. Overall, the percentage of students tested, met standards, but for one subcategory, AHS did not meet the standard by less than 1%. The rating listed on the public report card does NOT reflect the performance of our students and our school. The good news about this system is that since this year we’re ranked artificially low, we’ll likely show a lot of growth and receive significantly higher ratings next year!
Next year, the state report card will include student performance on the new Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA) that juniors will take in May of 2014. The new SBA tests the federal Common Core standards in English and Math. It raises the bar for student achievement and requires critical thinking skills. Instead of only using multiple-choice questions, students type in short answers and essays, equations, and rationales. I encourage you to review the practice tests at this website:
http://sbac.portal.airast.org/practice-test/ Click “Student Interface Practice and Training Tests” and sign in as a Guest, no login required. We encourage families of students in grades 9-11 to attend the February 4th Parent Academy on Common Core and Smarter Balanced Assessment. Please let me know if you have any questions.
All the Best,

As we begin the new school year at Ashland High School, it’s a natural time for students
to think about engaging in some authentic experiences that go beyond their ordinary class load. Internships provide outstanding opportunities for students to engage with their community while gaining exposure to possible career choices and experiences that may help them land jobs in the future. Through the AHS Internship program, students can have that experience while earning credits toward graduation at the same time. Members of our community have agreed to provide students experiences in areas including:
Health Care services
Veterinary Care
Park and Recreation programs and services
Retail services
Film Festival production
Environmental Education and Restoration
Legal Services
Athletic Training
Special Education
Activities Director
Geographic Information Systems services
Early Childhood Education services ... And many more!!!
It is also possible for students to recruit placement sites to suit their own unique needs by working with the AHS Internship coordinator
Don’t let these opportunities slip away. If you desire more information about the next steps, or if you are aware of other valuable placement opportunities for our students, please contact:

SENIOR QUOTE FORM - Due November 25, 2014 Quotes will be dispersed throughout the senior section or in the index by your name. Only forms submitted by current
seniors will be included in the final count. You may submit only one quote. Forms will be available in your Advisory class,
at the main office, or downloaded at http://ashland.k12.or.us/yearbook.
SENIOR PORTRAITS - Due November 25, 2014 Ashland High School - The Annual yearbook staff encourages you to include your senior portrait in this year's yearbook.
We will not use the student LifeTouch ID photos which were taken this August, so you will need to provide a separate
portrait to the yearbook staff.
Senior year is an extremely important year in a person’s life. To help commemorate this year, one of the most important
documents is the senior’s yearbook photo. The following information will help you plan for your senior portraits
adequately and ensure that the picture that appears in your yearbook will be one that you will treasure for a lifetime. Download a copy of the portrait requirements at http://ashland.k12.or.us/yearbook.
What will just not work... We want to be able to see each senior’s face clearly. We cannot accept images....
1. Displaying inappropriate emblems or slogans. 2. Where the senior’s face is obscured by clothing or other items.
3. That are blurry or low-resolution. 4. That are poor quality, including Polaroid-type or sloppy scans.
Remember that if the photo submitted does not meet the above stated specifications; or if we do not receive an informal
portrait you portrait will not be included in the yearbook. The yearbook staff reserves the right to exclude any photograph that does not meet quality publication standards and/or does not meet our requirements listed above. The publication
deadline will not be changed. Seniors are urged not to delay their portrait submissions to the last minute. The staff appreciates your support and cooperation.
YEARBOOK PERSONAL RECOGNITION ADS - Due January 23, 2015 If you are looking for a way to publicly recognize your student, a personal ad in the yearbook is a great way to do it. Personal ads come in a variety of sizes and are available at several price ranges. The ads staff will create your ad based
on the pictures you submit. Please note the number of pictures you may submit is based on the ad size template you are
purchasing. When selecting your pictures for the ad, choose ones that are crisp and clear, have good color, are not copyright protected, unedited, and have a high resolution (300 dpi). This will help make the process easier and ensure a
quality ad. Pictures downloaded from Facebook (or any other web site) will not work - their resolution is too low and will not print properly.
Our staff will review your photos upon receipt to approve picture choices and quality of pictures. Oftentimes, we are given
pictures with a low resolution, too blurry, have hand signs, etc., and this has affected our deadlines. We want the ads to be the highest quality possible. To help you prepare your Senior Ad, please see the ads checklist on the next page. All
items (completed contract, pictures, typed message and payment) must be submitted together. Once everything is
approved you are guaranteed space. There is a limited number of pages available, so please do not procrastinate. Once all the pages are filled, no more ads will be sold. No ads will be accepted after January 23, 2015. Forms will be
available in your Advisory class, at the main office or downloaded at http://ashland.k12.or.us/yearbook.
Every member of the yearbook staff is dedicated and committed to producing a memorable publication in which each
senior can take pride. Please keep in mind that this is a student publication. While we strive to meet the highest standards, our success depends significantly on the assistance that we receive from students and community members.
We very much appreciate the help we receive in achieving our publication goals.
Again, thank you for your support and cooperation. If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me at [email protected] or leave me a voice mail message at 541.482.8771.
Sincerely,
Kristopher Prusko, Publication Advisor
