IN SCHOOL 21. Arrival and Dismissal

Arrival On arrival to report for school, please bring your child to the assembly area that is located at Level 1 of the church building. You will wait with your child outside the designated Holding Area until the teachers are ready to start Health Check. Before Health Check, the Holding Area is only for pupils who arrive on school bus service. Do not to leave your child unattended in the playgrounds or anywhere in the kindergarten premises (example, the classrooms). After Health Check is conducted, your child will wait in the Holding Area for the teacher’s instructions before proceeding to Level 2 for Assembly. Parents are discouraged from the Holding Area. If your child reports for school late, please remain at Level 1 until the teacher on duty has completed Health Check for all latecomers. The teacher will bring the children to Level 2 as a group. Please keep clear from the Lift Lobby and the passage from the Holding Area to the Lift Lobby unblocked. This will help children to transit smoothly to the Lift Lobby and safely to Level 2. Dismissal At the end of the school session, the teachers will bring your child to Level 1 for dismissal.

Please always wait outside the Lift Lobby and step forward only when the teachers are ready to release your child. It is important that parents and caregivers keep clear from the Lift Lobby during Dismissal. This area serves as the holding area for

15

the children until the teachers are ready to release them safely to parents and caregivers. Children learn social graciousness from adults. When at Level 1, please return chairs to their original location, push chairs under the tables after use and refrain from siting on tables.

22. Attendance

Capstone encourages parents to send your child to attend school daily as irregular attendance will hinder your child from benefiting from the full curriculum.

Parents are to inform the Principal and/ or the class teachers in advance if your child is not able to attend school. If your child is traveling overseas, please complete and submit Travel Declaration Form before trip.

23. Punctuality

Your child is required to arrive in school on time. Parents are advised to fetch your child punctually to avoid keeping him/ her waiting anxiously. This will also allow school staff and teachers in attending to other children and duties.

24. School Bag

Some daily items to pack in your child’s bag are: 1. Communication Pouch with booklet (issued by the teachers on

1st day of school) 2. Water bottle 3. Jacket/ cardigan 4. A pack of wet wipes 5. A set of spare clothes and pull-up diapers *for pupils who are

not fully toilet trained or who are unable to attend to their toileting needs independently

16

25. Proper School Attire All pupils are expected to be properly attired in the Capstone uniform during school hours. The school uniform is to be worn with the shirt tucked under the pants/ skirt.

If your child is enrolled in our Pre-Nursery class, please ensure that he/she has an extra set of clothing (include pull-up diapers and wipes if the child is not toilet trained) in his/ her school bag every day.

Appropriate footwear to school comprises of socks and covered shoes (e.g. sport shoes, sneakers, canvas shoes). Painted toes or fingers and make-up to school are discouraged.

26. Personal Effects

Parents are advised to label all your child’s belongings for easy identification. We seek your cooperation not to let your child wear jewelry or valuables to school for safety reasons.

27. Excursions The school will organize excursions in conjunction with the theme topics, festivals and celebrations. These outings are to encourage children’s development of knowledge, awareness of their environment and to have a change from Capstone’s routines.

We seek your support by allowing your child to participate in these excursions. Details of such outings will be provided to parents at the relevant times. Excursion fees paid are non-refundable.

28. Annual School Photo-Taking and Concert & Graduation Ceremony The school photo-taking and concert & graduation ceremony events are held annually. These events involve all pupils. Fees paid for the events are non-refundable.

17

29. Toys The kindergarten has a wide range of toys for your child to play with. We encourage children to leave their own toys at home and explore the variety that is on offer on our premises.

We understand that younger children may wish to bring a security toy during their early days at Capstone. If so, please label the toy clearly with your child’s name. However, do try your best to help your child to wean off the habit.

30. Birthday Celebration

We are happy to celebrate your child’s birthday at Capstone. Please inform your child’s class teacher at least one (1) week in advance via writing in the Communication Booklet. The kindergarten will turn away celebration requests during 1st week of school term, excursions, school celebrations and when there is insufficient notice period for the teacher to firm up an arrangement with you.

If you wish to provide a cake and other special items (e.g. goodie bags) for the occasion, we can work with you on the suitability of treats for the children. When bringing in the birthday cake and/ or other food, please provide the necessary disposable plates, forks and spoons. On the day of the birthday celebration in Capstone, your child is allowed to come to school in his/ her favourite clothes for this special day.

31. Guidance and Discipline When a child shows an unacceptable behaviour, our teachers will use a positive approach to guide and discipline him/her. Our teachers will explain and give the child clear guidelines and limits. Positive encouragement would be offered rather than criticism.

Page 18: Parent Handbook - Capstone Kindergarten :: by TACMC A.pdfParent Handbook The Capstone Kindergarten 61 Wishart ... Flu, H1N1) 21 40. Allergies, Medical History and/ or Special Needs

18

If appropriate, we may separate the child from the other children until he/ she shows the correct and acceptable behaviour.

ADJUSTING TO SCHOOL

32. Accompanying Your Child to School

Parents of newly-enrolled children may remain on the kindergarten premises (Level 1 and 2) during school hours only on the first 3 days of school. We do not encourage parents to be present thereafter. If, however, you feel that your child requires special care from you, please speak to the Principal and/or the teachers.

33. Helping your Child Adjust to School To help your child adjust more quickly to school, you may:

Talk about some of the new people your child will meet and the new things your child will do.

Encourage your child to be toilet trained and to be able to feed and dress independently.

Encourage your child to sleep early every night so that your child has sufficient hours of sleep

Read the letters, circulars and memos that your child may bring home from time to time

Show pleasure at your child’s work efforts and encourage him/ her to share his/ her daily experiences in the school with you

Depending on your child’s age, he/ she will ‘act out’ feelings by:

Clinging to you and refusing to let go

Throwing tantrums

Not eating

Forgetting their toilet training

Thumb sucking

Expressing a desire to stay at home

Page 19: Parent Handbook - Capstone Kindergarten :: by TACMC A.pdfParent Handbook The Capstone Kindergarten 61 Wishart ... Flu, H1N1) 21 40. Allergies, Medical History and/ or Special Needs

19

Usually these problems are temporary. These behavioral patterns should go away if your child is lovingly treated yet firmly by both you and our staff.

34. Toilet-Training

A child who is toilet-trained is able to participate better and benefit from the programme. Please inform the kindergarten if your child is not toilet trained yet.

35. Name Tag for New Pupil

If your child is a new pupil in the kindergarten, he/ she will be issued a name tag on the 1st day of school (for children on school bus service, only one name tag will be issued).

Please ensure that your child wears the name tag to school daily during 1st month in school. The name tag will help the teachers and Principal to identify your child as a new pupil in kindergarten and to offer the appropriate help and guidance as the child adapts to the school environment.

A fee of $2.00 will be charged to parents for a new name tag.

36. Saying Good-bye

To help make the transition from home to school as easy as possible for your child, please bring him/her to the respective teacher and spend a few moments with him/her and the other children.

Please do not leave without saying goodbye, as your child will be frightened if he/she finds you suddenly gone. However, once you have left your child, please refrain from repeatedly returning to say goodbye as this will further upset the child. Most children do not remain upset for long after the parent has left.

As some children may need more time to settle in a new environment, we encourage parents to persevere in bringing your

20

child to school. This will help your child to adjust quickly to school, and to enjoy school as soon as possible.

HEALTH, SAFETY AND CARE 37. Health and Care

If your child is unwell, please keep your child at home. Children who return to class after being away due to illness are to produce a valid medical certificate.

Health checks will be conducted on all pupils arriving in school. We will contact you immediately if we believe that your child is ill. We will appreciate it if you could then come as soon as possible to collect your child. This will ensure that your child receives good care and would be able to rest at home. This would also help to minimize the risk of infecting other children.

If your child suffers an injury while at school, we will contact you immediately. If you cannot be contacted, we will use our discretion to seek appropriate medical attention for your child. Parents are to bear the cost of any such medical expenses incurred.

38. HFMD

Any child with a fever and/ or blister-like sores in the mouth, on the hands and feet will be sent home. Before these children return to school, they must be certified medically fit by the doctor with a copy of the certificate submitted to the class teacher. Parents are encouraged to conduct regular health checks on your child at home, and to keep him/ her at home if any of the following is noted:

small, blister-like sores in the mouth, hands, and feet

sudden onset of fever

Page 21: Parent Handbook - Capstone Kindergarten :: by TACMC A.pdfParent Handbook The Capstone Kindergarten 61 Wishart ... Flu, H1N1) 21 40. Allergies, Medical History and/ or Special Needs

21

Please inform the kindergarten immediately if your child is diagnosed with HFMD. If a sibling is infected, your child should be kept at home too unless there are arrangements in place to separate the children till the infected child recovers.

39. Influenza-like Illnesses (E.g. Common Cold, Flu, H1N1)

Please inform the kindergarten immediately if your child is issued with a Medical Certificate (MC) for influenza-like illness. Please submit the MC to the kindergarten as soon as possible. If your child is unwell, please exercise social responsibility by:

Keeping him/ her at home

Seeking medical attention

Ensuring that your child is well before returning to Capstone Your child would be required to wear a 3-ply medical mask to and if he/she has any influenza-like symptoms (e.g. coughing, runny nose). The kindergarten will request parents to bring the child home if these symptoms are observed and the child is not wearing a medical mask to school. The teachers will stress to the children the importance of maintaining good hygiene habits. For example:

Cover nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing. Wear a 3-ply medical mask when feeling unwell.

Wash hands with soap and water (4 steps – wet, lather, rinse and dry)

Please reinforce the school’s efforts by encouraging your child to practice these habits at home too.

40. Allergies, Medical History and/ or Special Needs

You are to inform the kindergarten immediately if your child has allergies, specific medical history or any special needs.

22

41. Medication

Medicine that is brought to the kindergarten has to be labeled with the child’s name. Instructions for dosage must be given in writing.

42. Meals Children enrolled in the first session will be provided with a mid-morning snack. Children enrolled in the second session will be provided with lunch. Children who are attending 4-hour programmes (N, K1 and K2), light refreshments will also be served during the 3rd hour of the programme. Our meals and refreshments follow the guidelines set by the Ministry of Health. The food menu will be changed regularly and will be displayed on the notice board. A copy of the food menu will be distributed to parents in the 1st week of every school term. We do not serve halal food in the kindergarten. We also do not serve pork and beef. If your child has special dietary needs or particular food allergies, you can speak to the Principal and/ or the class teacher. We will try our best to accommodate these needs. Please do not approach the school cook. There is no need to pack food from home. The teachers will encourage your child to eat healthily and to understand that good food is related to growing well and being strong and healthy. We will discourage snacks such as chocolates, biscuits, chips, sweets, in school, except on special occasions (e.g. birthday and school celebrations).

43. Road Safety

It is the responsibility of every adult to provide safe road conditions to children in the kindergarten.

Page 23: Parent Handbook - Capstone Kindergarten :: by TACMC A.pdfParent Handbook The Capstone Kindergarten 61 Wishart ... Flu, H1N1) 21 40. Allergies, Medical History and/ or Special Needs

23

1. Parents are not allowed to park your car along the kindergarten driveway, especially during peak times such as Arrival and Dismissal time.

2. The driveway is for alighting passengers only. Please park your car at the church car park or at the public car park lots outside the kindergarten premises. Only school buses are allowed to park at the driveway. We need everyone to do your part so that we have as few cars as possible at the driveway especially during Arrival and Dismissal timings. Fewer cars at the driveway = better road safety at the driveway.

3. Reduce driving speed when turning into the driveway. This will

enable you to brake in time should a child dash out into the driveway.

4. Do not do a 3-point turn and park your car against traffic flow

at the driveway. This is a safety hazard and it poses a danger to all motorists who turn into the driveway.

5. Do not allow your child to cross the driveway unsupervised.

Please walk your child into the school building and hand him/ her over personally to the teachers.

COMMUNICATION 44. Communication Booklet and Pouch

Every child will receive a Communication Pouch that contains a booklet to facilitate regular communication between teachers and parents during the school term. Please return the bag to the class teacher during the 1st week of every new school term as it will be reuse for the same purpose at the end of the term. If your child’s bag is damaged, please bring it to the class teacher who will replace it at no cost. If a new bag has to be issued (e.g. replace a lost bag), a fee of $5.00 per bag will be charged to parents.

48. Parental Involvement

Capstone adopts an ‘open door policy’ with parents and encourages parents to:

Give feedback to the Principal and teachers on your child’s development and progress.

Attend orientation programme, talks and Parent-Teacher Conference sessions.

Participate as much as possible in your child’s activities that are organized by the kindergarten.

We believe your child can be best educated if parents and teachers work together. Hence, we encourage parents to volunteer your time in kindergarten to assist in various school activities. To find out more, please contact the Principal and/ or class teachers.
