TheInternationalSchoolDelft(ISD)isacandidateschoolfortheInternationalBaccalaureate®(IB)PrimaryYearsProgramme(PYP)andpursuingauthorizationasanIBWorldSchool.IBWorldSchoolsshareacommonphilosophy—acommitmenttoimprovetheteachingandlearningofadiverseandinclusivecommunityofstudentsbydeliveringchallenging,highqualityprogrammesofinternationaleducationthatshareapowerfulvision.OnlyschoolsauthorizedbytheIBcanofferanyofitsfouracademicprogrammes:thePrimaryYearsProgramme(PYP),theMiddleYearsProgramme(MYP),theDiplomaProgrammeortheIBCareer-relatedProgramme(IBCP).Candidatestatusgivesnoguaranteethatauthorizationwillbegranted.ForfurtherinformationabouttheIBanditsprogrammespleasevisitthislink:www.ibo.org.

2.2 TheIBProgrammes
TheInternationalBaccalaureate®(IB)offersacontinuumofinternationaleducation.Theprogrammesencouragebothpersonalandacademicachievement,challengingstudentstoexcelintheirstudiesandintheirpersonaldevelopment.
InordertoteachIBprogrammes,schoolsmustbeauthorized.EveryschoolauthorizedtoofferIBprogrammesisknownasanIBWorldSchool.
ThePrimaryYearsProgramme(PYP)-foundedin1997ThePYPpreparesstudentsaged3-12tobecomeactive,caring,lifelonglearnerswhodemonstraterespectforthemselvesandothersandhavethecapacitytoparticipateintheworldaroundthem.Itfocusesonthedevelopmentofthewholechild.
TheMiddleYearsProgramme(MYP)-foundedin1994Achallengingframeworkthatencouragesstudentsaged11–16tomakepracticalconnectionsbetweentheirstudiesandtherealworld,theMYPisinclusivebydesign;studentsofallinterestsandacademicabilitiescanbenefitfromtheirparticipation.
TheDiplomaProgramme(DP)-foundedin1968ResearchsuggestsmanybenefitstochoosingtheDPforstudentsaged16–19.Theprogrammeaimstodevelopstudentswhohaveexcellentbreadthanddepthofknowledge–studentswhoflourishphysically,intellectually,emotionally,andethically.TheCareerRelatedProgramme(CP)-foundedin2012TheCPisaframeworkofinternationaleducationaddressingtheneedsofstudentsaged16-19engagedincareer-relatededucation.Itleadstofurther/highereducationapprenticeshipsoremployment.

Itprovidesschoolswithacurriculumframeworkofessentialelements—theknowledge,concepts,skills,attitudes,andactionthatyoungstudentsneedtoequipthemforsuccessfullives,bothnowandinthefuture.
Schoolsworkwiththefiveelementstoconstructarigorousandchallengingprimarycurriculumforinternationaleducation.

ThePYPaimstocreateacurriculumthatisengaging,relevant,challengingandsignificantforlearners.Thecurriculumistransdisciplinary,meaningthatitfocusesonissuesthatgoacrosssubjectareas.
ThePYPisorganizedaccordingto:• Thewrittencurriculum,whichexplainswhatPYPstudentswilllearn• Thetaughtcurriculum,whichsetsouthoweducatorsteachthePYP• Theassessedcurriculum,whichdetailstheprinciplesandpracticeofeffective

Thewrittencurriculumismadeupoffiveessentialelementsanddetailswhatstudentswilllearn.ThefiveessentialelementsofthePYPare:• knowledge,whichisbothdisciplinary,representedbytraditionalsubjectareas
(language,maths,science,socialstudies,arts,PSPE)andtransdisciplinary;• concepts,whichstudentsexplorethroughstructuredinquirytodevelopcoherent,
in-depthunderstanding,andwhichhaverelevancebothwithinandbeyondsubjectareas;

ThetaughtcurriculumisthepartoftheInternationalBaccalaureate®(IB)PrimaryYearsProgramme(PYP)thatsetsoutitspedagogicalapproach.
ItidentifieshowschoolsshouldteachthePYPwrittencurriculum.
ThePYPiscommittedtostructured,purposefulinquirythatengagesstudentsactivelyintheirownlearning.Theprogrammesupportsstudents’effortstoconstructmeaningfromtheworldaroundthemby:
• drawingontheirpriorknowledge• providingprovocationthroughnewexperiences• providingopportunitiesforreflectionandconsolidation.
Thisapproachrespectsstudents’developingideasabouthowtheworldworks.Itencouragesthemtoquestion,considerandrefinetheirunderstandingofthesocialandnaturalworld.
CollaborationisakeypartofplanningforschoolsimplementingthePYP.Allteachersareengagedintheplanningprocess,definingthecurriculum’scentralideas,discussinghowbesttobringinquiryintothoseideasintheclassroom,andfindingwaystomeettheneedsandinterestsofeverystudent.
Teachersmustattendtraining,inordertoimplementthePYP.TheIBoffersawiderangeofprofessionaldevelopmenttosupporteducatorsingainingadeeperunderstandingoftheprogramme.
TheuniqueapproachestoteachingandlearningintheInternationalBaccalaureate®(IB)PrimaryYearsProgramme(PYP)canbeexplainedthroughthetaught,writtenandassessedcurriculum.Theassessedcurriculumexplainshowteachersgoaboutgatheringandanalysinginformationaboutstudentperformance.TheIBdoesnotsetexaminationsormoderategradesinthePYP.
Thepurposesofassessmentareto:
• promotestudentlearning• provideinformationaboutstudentlearning• contributetothesuccessfulimplementationoftheprogramme.

Throughassessment,theIBhelpsschoolsteachingthePrimaryYearsProgramme(PYP)toidentifywhatstudentsknow,understand,candoandvalueatdifferentstagesintheteachingandlearningprocess.
InthePYP,learningisviewedasacontinuousjourney,whereteachersidentifystudents’needsanduseassessmentdatatoplanthenextstageoftheirlearning.
Teachersuseawiderangeofassessmentstrategiestocollectinformationoneachoftheelementsrepresentedinthewrittencurriculum:theunderstandingofconcepts,theacquisitionofknowledge,themasteringofskills,thedevelopmentofpositiveattitudesandtheabilitytotakeresponsibleaction.
InthefinalyearofthePYP,students,carryoutanextended,in-depth,collaborativeprojectknownasthePYPexhibition.
Thisinvolvesstudentsworkingcollaborativelytoconductanin-depthinquiryintoreallifeissuesorproblems.StudentscollectivelysynthesisealltheessentialelementsofthePYPinwaysthatcanbesharedwiththewholeschoolcommunity.
Italsoprovidesteacherswithapowerfulandauthenticprocessforassessingstudentunderstanding.
TheexhibitionrepresentsauniqueandsignificantopportunityforstudentstoexhibittheattributesoftheIBlearnerprofiledevelopedthroughouttheirengagementwiththePYP.
Italsoprovidesschoolsandstudentswithawonderfulopportunitytocelebratethetransitionoflearnerstothenextphaseoftheireducation.
2.3 IBLearnerProfile

2.4 Communication
AllofficialcommunicationbetweentheschoolandhomeisinEnglish.Communicationissentoutfromtheschoolinthreemainways:emails,letterssentoutwithchildren,noticespostedontheblog.Parentsareencouragedtousetheschool’sblogtocommunicatewithteachersandtocommentandprovidefeedbackonworkdoneforthestudents.AllstaffalsohaveofficialISDemailsthatcanbeusedbyparentstocommunicatewithteachers,thesearelistedintheschoolguide.
Schoolblogs
Eachclasshasablog.ParentsareautomaticallysigneduptotwoblogswhentheirchildrenbeginstudyingatISD.ThereisageneralISDhomeblogandaclassblogwhichismanagedbyeachclassteacher.Theblogsaretheprinciplemeansofcommunicationbetweenhomeandschool.Parentsareencouragedtochecktheblogregularlytokeepthemselvesinformedofeventsatschoolaswellastoensurethattheyhaveabetterunderstandingofwhattheirchildrenaredoinginschool.
2.5 ReportingtoParents
ISDusesavarietyofmeanstoreporttoparentsandtokeeptheminformedoftheirchildren’sprogress.Twoofficialwrittenreportsaresentoutinanacademicyear,oneinJanuary/FebruaryandanotheroneinJuly.Reportsaresentoutinapaperformandarehandedtochildrentotakehome.Forparentswhoareabsentonthesedays,thereportsarestoredintheofficeuntilparentscanarrangeasuitabletimetocollectthem.Pleasebeadvisedthatreportsarenotissuedearly.Inadditiontothesereports,ISDrunstwoParentTeacherConferences(PTC),oneinOctoberandanotheroneinApril,andaStudentLedConference(SLC)inJuly.Theaimsoftheseconferencesaretokeepparentsinformedabouttheprogressoftheirchildrenaswellastogivethemanopportunitytospeaktotheclassteacherandtocelebratetheirstudentslearning.

2.6 Assessment
Weuseavarietyofassessmenttoolsattheschooltokeeptrackofstudentprogressandtoinformtheteachingandlearningcycle.Moreinformationaboutthesetoolsandtheformsofassessmentcanbefoundinourassessmentpolicy.
2.7RestorativePractices
Differentschoolsdevelopdifferentbehaviourmanagementpoliciesbasedondifferentschoolsofthought.Here,atISD,wehavedevelopedourbehaviourpolicybasedontheprinciplesofrestorativepractices.Moreinformationonthismaybefoundontheschoolwebsite.

3.2 Fieldtrips
Aspartofthelearningexperienceandtoaidtheinquiryprocess,studentsoftengoonfieldtripsduringtheirtimeattheSchool.Foreverytrip,werequireparentstosignanauthorisationslipgivinguspermissiontobringtheirchildrenoff-siteandtoacknowledgethattheyareawareofthefieldtripanditsaims.Lettersaresentouttoparentsinadvanceofthetripinformingthemofthedestination,departuretime,aimofthetripandexpectedreturntimetotheSchool.PleasebeadvisedthatnochildrenareallowedonaschooltripuntiltheSchoolhasreceivedwrittenpermissionfromparents.ForexcursionswithintheboundariesofTUDelftCampus,youwillbeaskedtocompleteablanketpermissionformcoveringallsuchexcursionsduringtheschoolyear.Theschoolfeesdonotcoverthecostoffieldtrips.
3.3 Homeworkandreading
Theamountofhomeworkchildrenareexpectedtodovariesaccordingtoage.Homeworkshouldbesomethingthateitherconsolidatesskillslearnedinschooloranopportunityforstudentstoextendtheirlearningthroughinquiringandinvestigating.Childrenareexpectedtoreaddaily.Classteachersareabletosharehomeworkrequirementsforthedifferentyeargroupsatthestartoftheyear,orparentscanrefertotheschool’shomeworkpolicy.
3.4 PhysicalEducation(PE)kit
ChildrenhavetwoPElessonsaweek.Theselessonstakeplaceeitherinthesmallindoorgymonthecampusorinanexternalgym.ChildrenareexpectedtobedressedappropriatelyforPElessons.Thismeansthattheyshouldhavethecorrectshoes,suchasrunningshoesortrainers,andbewearingsportsclothingthatdoesnotrestricttheirmovement.TheschooldoesnothaveaPEuniformandchildrenmayweartheirblueISDiftheywantto,howeverthisisnotcompulsory.
3.5Dietaryrequirements
Healthyeating
WeoperateahealthyeatingpolicyatISD.Webelievethatstudentsneedtohaveavarieddietwhichcatersoftheirnutritionalneedswhilstencouragingthemtoleadahealthylifestyle.Aspartofthispolicyweactivelydiscouragestudentswhobringin

foodthatisdeemedtobeunhealthy.Wedothisbycontactingparentsandaskingyounottosendthetypeoffoodinquestioninwithyourchildorchildren.Themaintypesoffoodwediscouragecanbebroadlyclassifiedas‘junkfood’andconsistof,butarenotonlylimitedto,crisps,chocolate,sugarydrinks,friedfoods,sweets,andcakes.Wealsobelievethatitisunfairforoneortwochildrentobringthesefoodstoschoolwhentherestofthechildrenareadheringtothepolicy.
SnacksandLunch
Allstudentsareencouragedtobringahealthysnacktoschoolfortheirmorningandafternoonbreaks.Wealsostronglyrecommendthatyousendaresistantwaterbottletohelpwithadequatehydrationthroughouttheday.Thesnacksandlunchareeatenintheclassroomandaresupervisedbymembersofstaff.Weactivelydiscouragesoftdrinks,sweets,crisps,friedfoods,andanyothertypesoffoodswhichmaybeconsideredasunhealthy.Shouldstudentsbringthesefoodstoschoolparentswillbecontactedbytheschooleitherbyemailorphonetodiscourageyoufromsendingthesesnacksin.

ISDoperatesanonutpolicyatschool.Thismeansthatwedonotpermitanyfoodsinschoolthatcontainnutsorhavetracesofnutsinthem.
3.5 Birthdays
AtISDwebelieveinmarkingandcelebratingstudents’birthdaysinawaythatdoesnotimpactonthedailyrunningoftheSchoolordisruptstudentlearning.Birthdaysarecelebratedintheweeklyassemblywherechildrenareinvitedtostandatthefrontandhavehappybirthdaysungtothembytherestofthechildren.Ifparentswouldliketomarkthedayweaskthattheysendacakeintoschoolinthemorning,bearinginmindthe‘nonutpolicy’.Thecakewillbestoredintheschoolandsharedwiththeclassattheendoftheschoolday.Weareunabletoallowfamilymembersorparentsfromoutsideoftheschooltobepresentforthecuttingofthecake.
3.6 Valuables
AtISDwediscourageallstudentsfrombringinganyvaluablestoschool.ISDcannottakeresponsibilityforanylost,broken,stolenordamagedvaluablesthathavebeenbroughttoschoolbystudents.
3.8 Mobilephones
Studentsarenotallowedtousemobilephonesinschool.Shouldparentswishtosendamobilephonetoschoolwiththeirchildrentheydosoattheirownrisk.Phonesmustbeswitchedoffandremaininstudents’bags.Anystudentcaughtusingamobilephoneintheschoolduringschoolhourswillhavethephoneconfiscated.Anystudentwhobringsamobilephonetoschooldoessoattheirownrisk.

3.7 Lostproperty
Alllostpropertycanbefoundinaboxinthehallwayandweencourageallparentsandstudentstocheckthisfromtimetotime.Weaskthatallitemsofclothingbeclearlylabelledwiththestudent’snametomakeiteasierforustoidentifywhoownstheproperty.Beadvisedthatitemsthatarenotclaimedforaperiodofonetermwillbedonatedtocharity.

4.2 Parentcurriculumevents
Duringtheacademicyear,ISDrunsparentworkshopsandinformationsessionsondifferentaspectsofthecurriculum.Theoverallaimofthesesessionsistodevelopparentalunderstandingofourcurriculum,schoollifeandtohelpparentstoensuretheyarebetterabletosupporttheirchildrenathome.
4.3 Parent-TeacherAssociation(PTA)
AtISDwebelievethatthepartnershipbetweenhomeandschoolisvitaltoensurethatweareabletoofferthebesteducationpossibleforourstudents.Toassistuswiththis,wehaveaParentTeacherAssociationinschool.Thisisagroupofparentswhoassistatschoolinvariousways.Someparentshelpbylisteningtochildrenreadingonaweeklybasis,othershelpinthelibraryandotherparentshelpuswhenweareorganizingspecialevents,forexample,Carnival,InternationalDay,Halloween.Ifyouareinterestedinjoiningthisgroup,pleaseseetheDeputyHeadoftheSchoolwhoisresponsibleforcoordinatingthePTA.

4.6 Safetyandwell-beingIllnesswhileatHome/School
Ifyourchildissickwhileathome,weaskthatyouinformtheschoolinthemorningeitherbyphoneoremail.Ifparentsdonotinformtheschoolthattheirchildissick,thenthechildisrecordedasanunauthorisedabsenceintheregister.
Ifyourchilddevelopsatemperature,orbecomessickwhilstinourcare,wewillcallyouandaskyoutocollectyourchildassoonaspossible.
Medication
Ifyourchildisonmedication,whichyouwouldwantateachertoadministerwhilethechildisinourcare,pleasediscussthiswiththeteacherfirst.Amedicationformneedstobefilledinandsignedbyyouforeachtypeofmedicationtobeadministered.
AccidentandEmergencyProtocol
Wehavedesignedaspecialprotocol,whichourteachersfollowincaseofanaccidentormedicalemergency.Iftheneedtotakeyourchildtothehospitalarises,wewilldothateitherwithataxiorambulance.Wewillnotifyyouassoonaspossiblewiththenameandaddressofthehospital.Pleasebeassuredthatoneofourteacherswillstayatyourchild’ssideuntilyouarrive.
Also,ourstaffisinstructedtotakeemergencyevacuationmeasures,forinstanceincaseofafire,followingofficialDelftUniversity’sprotocolsforsuchsituations.
ClothingandSpareclothing
Wegooutsideduringallweatherconditions;thus,appropriateoutdoorwearisnecessary.Pleaseprovideawarmhatandmittens/glovesduringcoldperiods,sothatyourchildispreparedtoenjoyactivitiesoutside.Likewise,makesureyourchildisprotectedagainstexcessivesunlightwithaproperhat/capandsuncreamprotector(whichshouldbeappliedathomebeforecomingtoschool).
Wealsostronglyrecommendthatacompletechangeofclothingisleftattheschoolatalltimestoensureyourchild’scomfortiftheirotherclothingbecomessoiled.
4.7 Attendanceandregulations
InTheNetherlands,childrenwhoturn5yearsold,mustbeenrolledinschool.Parentsarenotpermittedtotakethemoutofschoolduringtermtimeforholidays.Parentswhodonotfollowthisregulation,mightbesubjecttolegalrepercussionsfromtheDutchgovernment.

4.8 Requestingleaveofabsencefromschool
WhenlivinginTheNetherlands,itisthelegaldutyofanyparenttoensurethatanychildrenaged5oraboveareregisteredwithaschoolandattendsfull-timeeducation.
IntheNetherlands,itisdifficulttoarrangeleaveoutsidenormalschoolholidayperiodsandthenonlyforverysignificantcircumstances.Anofficialleaverequestformmustbecompletedandsubmittedtotheschool.Thisleavemaynotbegrantedinthefirsttwoweeksoftheschoolyear.Shouldparentstaketheirchildrenoutofschoolwithoutpermission,theschoolhasthelegalobligationtoreportthistotheLeerplichtAmbtenaar(attendanceofficer),who,inmostcases,takeslegalaction.

SubmittingarequestforleaveofabsenceRequestformscanbecollectedfromtheschooloffice.Whencompleted,therequestformshouldbegiventotheofficeatleastfourweeksinadvanceoftheplannedabsence.
