Parent curriculum evening

We have 6 broad topics to cover over the year:

How to help your child at home
•Letter sound book
•Reading book
•Maths game
•Humpty word wall
What children take home each week:
Letter sound book
•Letter sounds as we learn them, following the Read Write Inc. programme
•Is it a bouncy or a stretchy sound?
•Simple words to read by blending the sounds together
•Models cursive letter formation
Reading book
•2 books changed each week (Monday and Thursday)
•It would be really helpful if you comment in your child’s diary
•Children can use pictures to tell the story to begin with
•You can support your child to recognise letter sounds, and then to sound out simple words
Maths game
•1 game changed each week (Tuesday)
•Please comment on your child’s record sheet
•Working towards the Early Learning Goal (end of year)
• Order numbers 1-20
• Say 1 more / 1 less than 1-20
• Add and subtract 2 single-digit numbers
• Problem solving, e.g. doubling, halving
• Using mathematical language e.g. for describing size, capacity, position
• Recreating patterns
• Using 2D and 3D shapes
Humpty word wall
•There are 100 high frequency words for children to learn by the end of Year 1
•Children will learn words in school
•You can support your child to sound out words on wall they bring home
•Some words cannot be sounded out, but children need to learn them from memory
What’s coming up?
•We aim to have a special day each term related to our topic, either a visit or a visitor where possible
•12th December – Christmas discos
•16th December – Christmas play
•17th December – Christmas play
•18th December – Christmas service and parties
