Bulletin Week Beginning: Monday 30 March 2020 WEEK A

Quick links: We have had a very positive and informative week supporting students through the Tutor Review Meetings. Students have engaged really well in this process and we thank them for their excellent approach.

Phase 2: Monday 8 June – Friday 19 June Year 7-9 continue with online learning via Showbie. Year 10 and Year 12 continue with online learning via Showbie and live lessons for Y12.

Year 10 and Year 12 1:1 subject appointment commence.

Phase 3: Monday 22 June – Friday 17 July Year 7-9 continue with online learning via Showbie.

Year 10 and 12 continue with online learning via Showbie, with some lessons in school. We will write to you in the week commencing 15 June to confirm the new timetable for Year 10 and Year 12 for the final four weeks before the summer holiday. It is important to note that we will use large teaching spaces and keep the students in their normal classes. Sadly, this is not a return to a full timetable, but a lesson of 2 hours in length per subject on any one day before the holiday.

We understand this is a challenging time for parents too, many of whom are now supporting their children’s learning

at home or may have questions about their children potentially returning to school.

The government have developed the following guidance and resources for parents to support them at this time:

• Q&A which answers key questions parents may have

• Guidance on phased reopening of education settings

• Guidance for parents on supporting learning at home for secondary school age children

• List of online resources to support children’s development

Top 3

Top 3 things we have asked students to focus on this week: 1. “Do not judge me by my success, judge me by how many times I fell down

and got back up again.” Nelson Mandela Thank you for the positive way you have engaged in the Tutor Review. We know that the conversations have allowed us to recognise what you have done so far but also help you manage the next few weeks. Take your tutors advice as you continue to be the best you can be.

2. “Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.” Jim Ryun

Now you know what has been working well, or what you need to change, stick with it.

3. “Never look down on anybody, unless you are helping them up” Jesse Jackson Continue to be kind to yourself and others.

In order for iPads to function as expected, could you please check your child has the latest version

of iPadOS installed. This can be checked in Settings - General - Software Update. It is also important that regularly used apps, such as Showbie have the latest version installed, through the App Store. Thank you (Dr Robson)

Supporting children and young people online

As our students continue to work online at home it is important that they do this in a safe way. One of the easiest ways to do this is by setting age-appropriate parental controls on digital devices and use internet filters to block malicious websites. These are usually free, but often need to be turned on.

There are a number of useful resources which can support parents and carers to keep their children safe online:

Advice from the National Crime Agency to stay safe online

Website: Thinkyouknow

Provides age-specific online safety checklists, guides on how to set parental controls on a range of devices, and a host of practical tips to help children get the most out of their digital world.

Website: Internet matters

A collaboration between ParentZone and the NCA providing support and guidance for parents from leading experts and organisations

Website: Parent info

Support for parents and carers to keep their children safe online, including tips to keep primary aged children safe online.

Website: LGfL

Support for parents and carers from the NSPCC, including a guide to social networks, apps and games

Website: Net-aware

Offers a toolkit to support parents and carers of children of any age to start discussions about their online life, to set boundaries around online behaviour and technology use, and to find out where to get more help and support.

Website: Childnet

Has advice for parents and carers to keep children safe from online radicalisation

Website: Let’s Talk About It

Has tips, advice, guides and other resources to help keep children safe online, including parental controls offered by home internet providers and safety tools on social networks and other online services.

Wellbeing

Supporting children and young people’s wellbeing

This is a difficult time for everyone and one of the ways COVID-19 can have an effect is on our mental health and wellbeing. Public Health England have produced guidance on how parents and carers can look after the mental

health and wellbeing of their children. This includes advice on: 1. Looking after your own mental health

2. Helping children and young people cope with stress

3. How children and young people of different ages may react

4. Bullying

5. Money worries

6. Where to get further support

This can be accessed here. We would also like to remind you and your child of some of the local and national services available to them. These

are:

KOOTH - Kooth.com is an online counselling, advice and

support service for young people aged 11-18 within the local area. It provides a safe, secure means of accessing help via the internet from professional team of counsellors.

BUZZ US - Compass BUZZ offers a confidential text messaging service to young people aged 11-18 across North Yorkshire. The service was named in conjunction with young people and is called BUZZ

US. By texting the service on 07520 631168 you will be able to receive confidential advice, support and signposting

from a wellbeing worker within one working day via text.

JustB have also set up a helpline if you would like to talk. They have a helpline for children, young people and adults across the Harrogate District who may be struggling or feeling anxious about the COVID-19 virus.

Available 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week.

Progression

Year 12 - Starting Your UCAS Application

Mrs Vincent will be sending you a PowerPoint document with a very clear set of instructions on how to complete your UCAS application and how to approach your personal statement. In the meantime, please complete the

Proforma in your form’s Showbie and start navigating the Unifrog and UCAS websites.

Personal Statement

Whether you are hoping to go to university, looking at apprenticeship schemes or applying for a job, it is important to have a well thought out personal statement. This is your chance to describe your ambitions, skills and experience that will help you stand out from the crowd. We will soon be asking you to draft a personal statement to submit to your form tutor and upload to Unifrog, so it is worth starting to think about what you will include. Click here for some advice from UCAS on how to put together a winning personal statement.

Future Learn offer a host of different free courses so you are bound to find something relevant to your aspirations. Don’t be put off by how long they say the course takes, you’ll find it doesn’t take as long as specified.

Virtual Open Days

Normally, around now Year 12 students would be starting to visit universities to get a feel for where they might like to apply. Whilst that’s not possible this summer, universities are doing their best to offer you

virtual tours and Q&As with experts, teachers and students. For a full list of upcoming ‘open days’ click on either the What Uni? or Open Days boxes below.
