    Abstract

    BackgroundAnumberofepidemiologicalstudieshavedemonstratedGiardiaasprevalentinbothhumansanddogsworldwideandhavepostulatedtheoccurrenceofanthroponotic,zoonoticandanimalspecificcyclesoftransmission,whichmaybegeographicallyandregionallyuniqueinitsepidemiology.Theaimofthisstudywastoutilisemoleculartoolstodeterminetheprevalenceand COMPARE genotypesofGiardiaduodenalisinfectinghumansanddogslivinginapreviouslyidentifiedGiardiaendemicvillageinruralCambodiainordertoascertainzoonotictransmissionrisk.

    FindingsTheprevalenceofG.duodenalisinhumansanddogswas18.3%(40/218)and10.6%(10/94)byPCR,respectively.MolecularcharacterisationofthesmallsubunitofribosomalRNA(SSUrRNA)gene,triosephosphateisomerase(TPI)geneandsubassemblagecharacterisationoftheglutamatedehydrogenase(gdh)geneplaced27.5%(11/40)ofGiardiapositivehumansintoassemblageAIIand72.5%(29/40)intoassemblageBIIIofG.duodenalis.Indogs,20.0%(2/10)ofGiardiapositivesampleswerecharacterisedasG.duodenalisassemblageBIII,40.0%(4/10)asassemblageCand40.0%(4/10)asmixinfectionbetweenassemblageCandD.

    ConclusionOverall,justover2%ofdogsharbouredpotentiallyzoonoticassemblagesofG.duodenalisinthestudiedcommunitiesandhenceposeaminimalzoonoticriskforthetransmissionofGiardiatohumans.
