Descriptive Paragraph

This sample paragraph focusses less on the physical appearance than on the cat's habits and actions. You can hear, see, and feel how Gregory spends his time. When you practice writing a descriptive paragraph yourself, you should address all aspects of the physical world.

Gregory Gregory is my brother’s beautiful gray Persian cat. He walks with pride and grace, performing a dance of disdain as he slowly lifts and lowers each paw with the delicacy of a ballet dancer. His pride, however, does not extend to his appearance, for he spends most of his time indoors watching television and growing fat. He enjoys TV commercials, especially those for Meow Mix and 9 Lives. His familiarity with cat food commercials has led him to reject generic brands of cat food in favor of only the most expensive brands. Gregory is as finicky about visitors as he is about what he eats, befriending some and repelling others. He may snuggle up against your ankle, begging to be petted, or he may imitate a skunk and stain the leg of your pants. Gregory does not do this to establish his territory, as many cat experts think, but to humiliate Bones because he is jealous of my brother’s friends. After his guests have fled, you’ll often see the old fleabag snoozing and smiling to himself in front of the TV, and you likely forgive him for his obnoxious, but endearing, habits.

The Assignment

Your first paragraph-writing task is going to be a description. You are to simply create an answer that focuses on describing, and in so doing, focus on the physical senses of smell, sight, sound, touch, and taste (taste might be difficult given the range of topics). Recall from the story/movie, scenes that paid particular attention to the topic you’ve chosen; brainstorm the things that can give your audience the most interesting but accurate description.

1. Write a psychological profile of Rainsford or Zaroff.

2. Using the map of the island, provide a guided tour of the locations Rainsford found himself in while he was hunted by Zaroff.

3. Compare and contrast the physical and behavioural characteristics of Rainsford and Zaroff.

4. Describe how "The Most Dangerous Game"

paints a troubled picture of trophy hunting, or cruelty to animals?
