WALTER SCOTT ASKS ...

JAIMIE ALEXANDER

How do you relate to a character who has nomemory of who she is? “It may seem like it would be more diffi cult, but to me it means the sky’s the limit. When I play Jane, I follow my instincts.”

What was it like training with Navy SEALS toget ready for Blindspot? “Pretty intense—I only skimmed the surface of what they’re

capable of! It was a great experience. They’re so impressive. The skills they have are truly unbelievable.”

Jane Doe is covered in mysterious tattoos. Do you have any of your own? “I have nine. Each one has its own signifi cance and mean-ing. Only one shows through Jane’s tattoos, which is ‘ES’ on my wrist. When I was young-er, I used to mouth the words ‘Elephant shoe’ because it looked like I was saying ‘I love you,’ so that’s what it stands for.”

What’s the coolest tattoo you’ve ever seen on anyone? “I’ve seen a lot of awesome tat-toos, but I love the bird on Jane’s neck.”

Q: I am a fan of the new series Quantico. What can you tell me about Priyanka Chopra?

—Ashok P., Miami, Fla.

A: The role of FBI agent Alex Parrish on the ABC series, airing Sunday nights, marks Chopra’s American television debut. The former Miss World 2000 has more than 30 fi lms to her credit in her native India, where she is also a recording star. Chopra, 33, who was the fi rst Indian Guess Girl, is all about breaking clichés for women. “When I was a kid, I never saw anyone [on TV] who looked like me, or strong female characters,” she says. “Quantico is a testament to strong women.”

Q: Is singer/actress Victoria Justice going to be releasing any new music in the near future?

—Nancy M., Fayetteville, Ark.A: Justice, 22, is still interested in making music like she did on her two Nickelodeon series, Zoey 101 and Victorious, but for now she’s fo-cusing on acting. In September, she starred in the movie Naomi & Ely’s No Kiss List, and on Nov. 6 her most recent fi lm, the high school comedy The Outskirts, opened in theaters.

SERVEDIn honor of Veterans Dayon Nov. 11, we salute just

a few of the patriotic celebrities who have given service to our country in

the U.S. armed forces.

DREW CAREYMarine Corps

Reserves, 1980–1986

She stars as amnesiac “Jane Doe” in the action-packed hit NBCMonday-night series Blindspot, but Alexander, 31, paid her acting dues before that in HBO’s The Brink, Showtime’s Nurse Jackie and ABC Family’s Kyle XY. And on the big screen, she plays Lady Sif in the Thor movie franchise, a role she’ll reprise in Thor: Ragnarok in 2017.

Q: What will Donny Deutsch’s new series be like?—Rachel M., Springfield, Mass.

A: Donny!, premiering Nov. 10 on USA Network, will be a “soft-scripted” satirical look at media, wealth and romance, as fi ltered through Deutsch’s real-life Man-hattan townhouse and the plethora of women in his life. “Basically, I am the butt of the joke in this show, and the women rule,” says the opinionated former CNBC talk-show host, 57. “That’s the way I see it in real life also.”

im McGraw may be known as a country music singerand actor, but his passion for giving is as big as his career. A longtime supporter of veterans, McGraw is in his fourth year of partnering with

Chase and Operation Homefront, which takes empty homes and donates them—mortgage free—to returning veterans.

“My sister’s a veteran of the fi rst Gulf War. My uncle’s a Vietnam veteran. I’ve got tons of friends who are veterans,” he says. “When [Operation Homefront] came to me with this program that marries houses with deserving veterans who didn’t own a home…it’s just the

best program I can be involved in.” e project is as much about providing stability for vet-

erans as it is about giving them a place to live, McGraw, 48, says. “ ese guys spend so much of their lives dedicated to providing security for us,” he says. “ eir families have sacrifi ced everything, and they fi nd themselves trying to fi nd that same security. In a lot of cases they don’t have a home of their own. ey’re moving from place to place. If I can be involved in changing that, I’m glad to do it.”

car or home repairs, food, school supplies, baby products andother essentials.

As an ambassador for the organization, McGraw presented 36 homes to veterans and their families during his Shotgun Rider Tour this year. “ e veterans are so thankful because they have a service heart to start with; it’s just the kind of people that they are,” he says. “My reaction is always, ‘You don’t have to thank me or anybody for this. You deserve it.’ ”

For McGraw, and many other country musicians, giving back is in their DNA. “I think that’s sort of the environment that our music was born in—struggle and strife, helping each other out when times are hard,” he says. “A lot of us were raised in those circumstances and in those neigh-borhoods and family situations.”

From Hell Raising to HumanityMarried to fellow performer Faith Hill, with whomhe has three daughters (Gracie, 18, Maggie, 17, and Audrey, 13), McGraw believes staying close to his family keeps him grounded.

“You can give up your soul and your life [to work] if you don’t have something to balance it,” he says. “My family is certainly way on the other side of the scale balancing out my life.”

His friend, Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer Jon Meacham, touched on the importance of family in McGraw’s life when he profi led him as one of Time’s 100 Most Infl uential People. “McGraw is making music that’s more about raising a family

From Hell Raising to HumanityMarried to fellow performer Faith Hill, with whom he has three daughters (Gracie, 18, Maggie, 17, and Audrey, 13), McGraw believes staying close to his family keeps him grounded.

“McGraw is making music that’s more about raising a family

than raising hell,” he wrote. But balance wasn’t always a priority for the singer, who was “young, single and tearing it up” when he came to Nashville more than 20 years ago, and he hasn’t for-gotten those early days “when you didn’t have a family, and the

music was all you lived for,” he says. “I have that as the foundation of my music. When I go to work and put that cowboy hat on, I can go to that place when I’m onstage.”

He certainly does that on “Damn Country Music,” his latest album’s title track, which tells the story of a man so impassioned by country music that he packs his bags and sets out on his own in search of the dream. (Watch a video in-terview at Parade.com/damncountrymusicto hear what McGraw thinks about his daughter Gracie singing on the album.)

While McGraw helps others live their dream of owning a home, the history buff fi nds inspiration in the past. “With great people through-out history, there’s always been a service to what they do and a humanity about them,” he says. “I think that’s one of the great things that history can teach us: If you don’t have a humanity about what you do, it’s going to lead you down the wrong path.”

As for McGraw, he’s found his path with his fam-ily, his causes—and his music. “You have to know yourself as an artist. I think that’s the key to a long career,” he says. “I feel like I’ve found my highway. I found the pavement that I live on musically. As long as I stay true to who I am and keep my compass on the music that I like, I can have my window down and cruise.”

McGraw attended the Time 100 gala with his wife, Faith, and their daughters, (from left) Maggie, Audrey and Gracie.

John Dickerson may look mild-man-nered, but the CBS political director is known for asking questions smart and to-the-point enough to unsettle

world leaders. Dickerson, who replaced Bob Schieff er on Face the Nation in June, will be asking some tough questions when he moderates the second Democratic debate Nov. 14 from Des Moines, Iowa, at 9 p.m. ET on CBS.How do you prepare for a debate? I think about what the job of presi-dent requires, whether people have the skills for the job or a theory about the job. It’s against that theory that you make your decisions about how to do the job. So what’s their theory? It can be revealing. Often debates are not really debates; they’re parallel interviews. We’ll see what ours is. Has there ever been an election like this one? In 1840, William Henry Harrison was the fi rst person to ever campaign for the offi ce. Political rallies were all-day aff airs with booze, huge fl oats in parades, and the whole community came together. Politics was a spectacle. So in that sense, when Donald Trump buzzes by a stadium in his plane, it’s touch-ing on that deeply American sense of politics as a circus. How do you walk the line between reporting what’s popular and what’s really news? Sometimes the circus is the story, right? ere are our jobs as reporters and as analysts. If 20,000 people show up for an event, that’s a story. Why are they all there? Is it the person you’re cover-ing or the phenomenon? Is the phenomenon about entertainment or is it about people’s feelings about the country? Trump is shaking up the con-versation in a way that should force the others to fi ght for what they be-lieve. Some people see this as a weakness, that this circus has taken over our politics, but the alternate view could be that there’s nothing better than a circus; it forces us to ask, “What do we actually believe?”How do you keep in touch with what really matters? Family is crucial, because there’s nothing more humbling than trying to raise kids and be part of a marriage and family. [Dickerson and his wife, Anne, and their son, Bryce, 13, and daughter, Nan, 11, live in D.C.] Reporting out in the country you’re exposed to people with lots of diff erent fears and challenges and hopes and passions, and that shakes you out of being consumed by your own concerns. Going to church helps too. I go to mass at 5:30 p.m. Saturday nights, at the church I went to when I grew up.

Among parents with four children, what is the most common distribution of boys and girls? My friends think it’s two of each sex.

—M.E., Mesa, Ariz.

Your friends are wrong. Hav-ing three children of one sex (and one of the other) is most common. These are the possibilities (sexes noted in birth order):

(1) BBBB (2) BBBG (3) BBGB (4) BGBB (5) GBBB (6) BBGG (7) BGBG (8) GBBG (9) BGGB (10) GBGB (11) GGBB (12) GGGG (13) GGGB (14) GGBG (15) GBGG (16) BGGG

So, families with three chil-dren of one sex can occur in eight different ways (or 50 percent of the time), two of each sex can occur in six ways (37.5 percent) and four of the same sex can occur in two ways (12.5 percent).
