And nowa Gurkha soldier from the 1stBattalion, Royal Gurkha Rifles, isfacing charges for cutting off the headof a Taliban commander, took thehead so it could be identified and leftthe body behind. From Kipling’sGrave of the Hundred Head, asretaliation for the killing of a singleBritish soldier, we’ve gone over tothe British government being horriblyembarrassed because a Gurkhasoldier beheaded the corpse of aMuslim terrorist, from a group thatroutinely beheads people while alive. Why was this beheading such aterrible thing? The incident is hugely embarrassingto the British Army, which is tryingto build bridges with local Afghancommunities who have spent decadesunder Taliban rule. But who exactly are the Brits tryingto build bridges with here, that theywould be so worked up over aTaliban commander’s missing head?With the Taliban of course. Who didyou think? While the American media issteadfastly ignoring anything comingout of the UK that doesn’t involvedisgraced pop stars, burqas or BP–events are moving at their own paceunder the Tory-Lib government. Britain’s new Chief of Defense Staff,General Sir David Richards, came outand said that this whole war thing ishopeless, and we need to startnegotiating our surrender/withdrawalwith the Taliban.“There’s always been a point atwhich you start to negotiate with eachother,” Gen Sir David said. In his“private view” there was “no reasonwhy we shouldn’t be looking at thatsort of thing pretty soon,” he said. His private view, being that of theBritish Army Chief, is of course notvery private at all. The odd thingabout it is that Richards was singing acompletely different tune back inFebruary, when he was claiming thatwe were on the verge of defeating theTaliban.“The Taliban is now beginning torealise that they can lose this war,which was not the view they had ayear ago. We have to reinforce theview that they can, and will, bebeaten.” What happened between February

and today? For one thing, an election.And a new government. Which likelyis why Richards has changed his tunein public quite this much. Richards isalso being echoed by BrigadierLowder, commander of the ScottishBrigade, and Scotland’s most seniorsoldier, who was even more bluntthan Richards, saying openly thatnegotiating with the Taliban would bean exit strategy. (Not that this is aparticularly surprising view from acommander who led troops in Basra,where Shiite terrorists were allowedto take over, form death squads, andkidnap British troops.) The entire thing is of course acharade, and has been for some time.All the efforts to win over the Talibanhave really accomplished is to givethem money to buy more weaponsand recruit more fighters, via the 280m i l l i o n d o l l a r P e a c e a n dReintegration Fund which attempts tobribe the Taliban into going back tocivilian life. Meanwhile the Coalitionof the Willing has been winningpeace by providing payoffs to theTaliban in order to avoid attacks. And so we go back to that loneGurkha who hadn’t gone the messagefrom the top on down that the warwas unwinnable, and that Britain’sonly hope lay in trying to bluff theTaliban into letting them leave withsome dignity. Instead after threemembers of his unit were killed byTalib Hussein, a Taliban who hadbeen posting as an Afghan soldier,instead of risking his life trying todrag the entire body of a Talibancommander back while under fire– hetook the head. But that soldier wasclearly operating in a different era.

An era in which the lives of soldiersmattered more than showing respectto the body of an enemy terrorist. When you’re waiting for just theright moment to surrender to theTaliban, you don’t want to blow thedeal by beheading one of theircommanders after all. Why then theymight refuse to accept your surrender.They might even set stiffer terms foryour surrender. The Russians got offwith their own exit strategy fromAfghanistan by giving up a wholeload of military equipment to certainkey figures in the Mujahadeen, whojust happened to also become pivotalcommanders in the Taliban. It justhappened to be one of thosecoincidences that probably wasn’t acoincidence at all. What sort ofequipment will be left behind thistime and whose hands will it fallinto? Probably not a question wewant to ask at this point. Instead let’s turn away to anotherissue of the head involving Muslimsand the UK. Cameron’s EnvironmentSecretary, Caroline Spelman, hashelpfully the citizenry, 67 percent ofwhom would like to see the Burqabanned, that it is actually veryempowering. Where did Carolinepick up this novel lesson from? Whyfrom Afghanistan of course, thecountry most known for using theBurqa to empower women. But Mrs Spelman suggested thatwearing the burka could be seen as afeminist statement. She claimed that avisit to Afghanistan had persuadedher that “the burka confers dignity”. Of course nothing says dignity likebeing forced to wear a garbage bagover your head, or be shot. Or

feminism for that matter. If wearing the Burqa is about dignity,why don’t Muslim men wear it? TheBurqa exists because Islamic lawlabels all of a woman’s body Awrah,which must therefore be covered.What is Awrah, you might ask. Itmeans defect or disability. It’s alsoused to mean women in general. Youmight get the idea that Muslims arenot terribly fond of women from that,and you would be right. The Burqa isa portable curtain, for when a womanhas to go out of the house. It’s mobilePurdah, keeping her segregated frommen. But this isn’t really about feminism.It’s about surrender. One of theuncomfortable questions arising fromturning over Afghanistan to theTaliban, is the question of women’srights. The Taliban’s approach towomen’s rights was a bullet to thehead. Which means the questionrequires a little bit of whitewashing,such as say describing the Burqa asdignified clothing that women chooseto wear. Case in point… For her security, she wears a burqa— a different colored one each day— and she says she never takes thesame route to and from work. Thewoman says she is interested in peacecoming to Afghanistan, but isn’t surethat a deal with the Taliban wouldmean real peace for her. and She says some in the internationalcommunity are trying to forget howbrutal the Taliban movement istoward women, because they’re soimpatient to reach a peace deal thatwill allow their troops to come home. Revisionism. What revisionism?Damian Green and Caroline Spellmanhave you covered. The Burqa is allabout giving women dignity, byrefusing to treat them as humanbeings. So while 67 percent ofBritons support a ban on Burqas–government ministers insist that aBurqa ban would be “Un-British”.This naturally raises the question ofwhether a Burqa itself is British.Apparently nowadays the Burqa isBritish. Banning the Burqa is un-British. It is however French, Belgianand possibly Spanish. Surrendering to the Taliban is alsoBritish. Beheading them however isnot. How do we make sense of all this?Oh it’s rather simple. Being British isnow Un-British. But being Un-British, is British. Still confused? Dotry to keep up. David Cameronexplained this himself before he waselected by people hoping forsomething besides Labor, only todiscover that it was completelypossible to vote for three differentparties, and end up with Laboranyway.

Yonatan Shapira Israeli peace activist, YonatanShapira has been a busy guy lately.Recently returned from Warsaw,where he spray-painted one of the lastremaining vestiges of the Holocaust-era ghetto wall with the slogan: “Nomore ghettos,” protesting the Gazasiege, Shapira has also been regularprotestor at the Bilin anti-Wall(“something there is that does not likea Wall”) demonstrations, and is anac t ive suppor te r o f the BDSmovement. Amid this flurry ofactivity, Yonatan has hurt the feelingsof some in the Shin Bet. Apparently,he’s been a bad boy and let the chevradown, who expected more of him as adecorated IDF helicopter pilot. The secret police are so distressedthat they “ invited” him to a“friendly” discussion with an agent ata Tel Aviv police station. Yonatan’snarration of his story is alternatelyfunny and infuriating, which is theonly way you can describe Israeli

politics these days: Yesterday Rona from the Shabakcalled me and asked me to come talkto meet her in the police station onDizengof st. (Tel Aviv). She refusedto tell me what was it about, but madeit clear I wasn’t going to be arrested,and that this is just an acquaintance or“a friendly talk”… At five o’clock I got to the Dizengofpolice station and was sent to thesecond floor of the rear building,where a guy who presented himself asRona’s security guard waited for me.I was taken to a room and subjectedto a pretty intimate search to makesure I didn’t install any recordingdevice on my testicles. After I wasfound clean I was let into Rona’sroom. She was a nice looking girl,apparently from a Yemeni origin, inher early thirties. Rona told me that I she knew I wasactive in the BDS (movement) and(calling for) an economic boycott ofIsrael, and she wanted to know whatelse do I do as part of these activities.I told her that everything (that I do) iswell-known and published on theinternet and in the media, and that Ihave nothing to add, and that I wasn’t

going to talk to her. Rona emphasized that there is aKnesset bill that might soon make myactivities illegal. She went on andtried to get me into a political debate,asking if I know that the BDS is infact a Palestinian organization. Rona raised the issue of the graffitiin Warsaw and asked it was my ownidea or another part of the BDS. Sheasked if I understood that I crossed aline and hurt many people’s feeling.Obviously the Shabak feeling’s (werehurt) as well… I offered her again tolisten to interviews and read article onthe issue. She said she did listen andread, but she wanted to know more. Itold her I would be happy to give apublic lecture to anyone who wants tohear, but not (talk about it) in aShabak interrogation. Apart from the BDS issue she askedme if I knew that the demonstrationsin Bil’in and Ni’ilin are illegal, andthat the entire area is closed forIsraelis and internationals each Fridayfrom 8.00 am to 8.00 pm. She wentinto length explaining how thesoldiers feel in these demonstrationsand that it irritates them when I talkto them and when I answer them.

Rona said she was there herself andthat stones were thrown at her, andthat it war really unpleasant. She saidthat the fact that Israelis are presentthere makes the Palestinians moreviolent, and that I have to think howthe poor soldiers feel, and that all sheis trying to do is for the good of thecountry and out of her will to defendthe people living here. I answered that all I do is out of awill to defend the people living hereas well, and I asked where did she getall the information on my activitiesand whether they are listening to myphone. She said that she can’t answerthis, but that generally speaking theShabak has more important things todo, so I asked her what I was doinghere and why was I invited to a kindpolitical interrogation if they havemore important things to do. I asked again if they are listening tomy phone calls and Rona said shecan’t answer that. She asked me not to publish thecontent of our conversation becauseshe wasn’t the type who wantspublicity… I answered that as a

person committed to a non-violentstruggle against the occupation Iwould talk and publish anything Ican, including the content of thisconversation and future ones, if thesewill be such. I documented the entire conversationon a piece of paper until Rona starteddiscussing this paper and what I waswri t ing down. Eventual ly sheconfiscated the dangerous piece ofpaper, claiming that I was notallowed to have any recording devicein, and that what I was doing wasillegal. Luckily I remembered most of theconversat ion and Rona hasn’tconfiscated my memory yet. Maybe(it will happen) in our next meeting. That’s it. There might have beenmore details but from what I get thesewere the main issues. I understoodthat what they were after was ourinvolvement in the BDS, and thatthey might even be preparing files forthe moment the new law is passed. Yonatan A few notes and observations: in theU.S. no one in their right mind inShapira’s shoes would willingly agreeto an FBI meeting and certainly notwithout their lawyer.  I don’t knowwhat, if any consequences theremight’ve been for him if he’drefused, but clearly the civil liberties-f r e e s p e e c h p r o t e c t i o n s a r econsiderably weaker in Israel . Note the “intimate” body searchShapira experienced before he wasallowed to meet “Rona.”  This surelyhappened because Chaim Pearlmanmanaged to record 20 hours of audioconversations with another Shin Betagent, Dada, who incited him toassassinate Sheikh Ra’ah Salah.  Awell-informed Rotter member saysthat Dada has lost his job because he

couldn’t manage to prevent himselffrom being recorded by his target.  Iguess Rona wanted to keep her joband avoid the same fate.  Rumor hasit that Dada will be treated well andprobably end up as a private securityguard somewhere where he’ll be outof the way and no longer embarrassthe agency. Another astonishing aspect of thisinterrogation which could neverhappen in the U.S. is that Shapira isessentially being warned that he willbe prosecuted by the secret police ift h e K n e s s e t p a s s e s a l a wcriminalizing Israeli support forBDS.  This is an a priori warning thathis behavior will (they hope) becomeillegal and end with his prosecution. I was always under the impressionthat the secret police in a democracyenforced the laws on the books.  Ididn’t realize they could warn peoplethat behavior that was perfectly legalwould shortly become illegal andsubject them to arrest.  And this fromthe Only Democracy in the MiddleEast. THe global BDS movement is anentirely legal and legitimate form ofprotest against the Occupation.  Itdoes not threaten the Israeli State anymore than the divestment movementthreatened the South African state. The last I checked there was still aSouth Africa.  The only thing thatcountry lost was a racist, immoralpolitical system that dispossessed itsmajority and favored its minority.  Ifthe aims of the BDS movement areachieved Israel will not be destroyed. It will be different.  And last Ichecked it was perfectly legal to tryto change the immoral nature of apolitical system without mounting acoup against the government ordestroying the State.  We did this

ourselves in the 1960s. Further, I was shocked that the ShinBet would haul a suspect in forquestioning because their activities“upset” people.  Again, I alwaysthought you needed a violation of lawto intrude upon a citizen’s life in theway they did to Shapira.  Apparently,in Israel pure pique can result ingetting on the wrong side of theauthorities. The paranoia of the Shin Bet remindsme a great deal of the COINTELPROera of the 1960s, in which the FBI ranroughshod over civil liberties becauseit truly believed that the BlackPanthers, SDS and others were agenuine threat to the Republic.  Thisallowed them to bug, arrest, harass,threaten, beat and even kill activistsmostly going about their perfectlylegal business.  The differencebetween here and Israel is that wehave a constitution and checks andbalances that require accountabilityfrom every branch.  There willa l w a y s b e v i o l a t i o n s a n doverreaching by one branch oranother.  But the pendulum alwaysswings back to a more stableequilibrium.  This is what does nothappen in Israel.  There is no checkon the Shin Bet–not judicial, notpolitical.  They have carte blanche tohaul pretty much anyone they like infor questioning.  The only check ontheir power, and it is a small one, isthe media–or those in the media whoare not in cahoots with them or whoare not so cowed that they refuse tocross them.
