Some verbs form the passé composé with être, not avoir, as the auxillary or helping verb.
Par exemple:Michelle a parlé au téléphone avec ses copines!Michelle est restée à la maison hier soir.
Michelle a dejeuné avec ses copines hier à midi.
Michelle est sortie avec ses copines hier soir.
Michelle est rentré chez-elle en retard.
Michelle a fait ses devoirs après minuit!
Ses copines sont allées à la station de sports d’hiver le dernier weekend.
Verbs conjugated with être
in the passé composé

• Venir• Aller• Naître
• Descendre• Entrer• Rentrer
• Tomber• Retourner• Arriver• Mourir• Partir• Passer * ( is conjugated with
avoir if it has a direct object)
These verbs are often referred to as the Dr. Mrs. Van der Trampp verbs due to the acronym to the left.

The Dr +Mrs Van der Tramp verbs
• These verbs are intransitive and do not have direct objects.
• They usually refer to movement back and forth, from one place to another, or up and down or to location or to a state of being.
When you use etre to form the passe compose, you must make the past participle agree with the subject of the sentence.
Look at the previous sentences:With être
the subject is singular and feminine
Elle est sortie avec ses copines hier soir.With avoir
There is no agreement because the auxillary verb is avoir.
Elle a fait ses devoirs a minuit hier soir.
The subject is plural and feminine. Ses copines sont allées à la station de sports
d’hiver le dernier weekend.
The subject is masculine and plural.Ses copains sont allés à la station de sports d’hiver le dernier weekend.
There is no agreement with a verb conjugated with avoir
in the passé composé
Elle a fait ses devoirs après minuit!
The past participle must agree with the subject in gender and number when être is used to
make the passé composé.
Masculine and singular
Il est sorti avec ses copains hier soir.
Feminine and singular
Elle est sortie avec ses copains hier soir.
Make the following subjects and verbs agree:

Notice that #2 has no e or s. It is masculine and singular, so it agrees without adding anything.
