MS47 Papers of the Bible Churchmen's Missionary Society
Comprises the records of the Bible Churchmen's Missionary Society (BCMS), later renamed Crosslinks. Papers include records of the Society from its establishment in 1922 throughout the 20th century, comprising minute books covering 1935-1999 along with small sequences of reports and correspondence; a large series of personnel records and papers relating to deceased missionaries, 1924-2000; and a significant volume of periodicals and other publications produced by the society, 1922-2000.
The papers also comprise a small number of records of the BCMS Northern Council and the BCMS Bristol Auxiliary as well as the papers of the BCM College, Bristol, renamed Tyndale Hall in 1952. The records of the college comprise minutes, reports and correspondence. There is also a small volume of unofficial papers collected, or produced, by individual missionaries and deposited with the society. Taken as a whole, the papers are a rich source of information for both the study of missionary work undertaken by BCMS and for illustrating the life and works of various missionaries
The Bible Churchmen's Missionary Society (BCMS) was established on 27 October 1922 as the result of divisions within the Church Missionary Society (CMS) due to the latter's alleged developing theological liberalism. BCMS was formed of Scriptural Evangelicals and intended to continue working under what they viewed as the original theological and missionary principles of the CMS.
BCMS was quickly established under the leadership of Rev Daniel H. C. Bartlett who deemed that all BCMS missionaries should transfer to areas of the world where CMS had not previously operated. The first officers of the society included S.

H. Gladstone as Honorary Treasurer and Bartlett as Honorary Secretary. A provisional committee was formed and offices were later taken at 14 Victoria Street, Westminster. Provincial councils were soon launched. The Northern Council was established on 2 November 1922 with Rev Percy Stott as President, Rev George Denyer as Secretary and Rev Harries Jones as Chairman. A Southern Council was also formed with Rev T. Lancaster as President. Canon Marmaduke Washington, Rev T. H. Bland and Rev I. Siviter, with strong local backing, soon launched Eastern, Western and Midland Councils.
A men's missionary and theological college was founded at Clifton, Bristol on 3 November 1925 as a training ground for ordinands both for the Home Ministry and Overseas. The college was renamed Tyndale Hall in 1952. A women's college, the gift of Mrs Dalton, was opened on October 15 1930. Located in Cotham Park, Bristol, it was known as Dalton House. In 1972 Dalton House merged with Tyndale Hall and Clifton Theological College to become Trinity College.
Archdeacon Mackay of Saskatchewan, Canada became the first BCMS missionary, working with the Inuit people of Canada. In 1923 work began in India followed by China and Burma. In 1929 the BCMS sent their first missionaries to Africa, arriving in Morocco. The same year saw requests for the society to begin work in Kenya and Uganda. Early society magazines also feature BCMS work in Canada, the Arctic, Persia and Ethiopia. In the years around the Second World War the society withdrew from Ethiopia (1937 war), Burma (1942 invasion) and China (1949-51 expulsion). By the late 1940s Daniel Bartlett relinquished leadership to A. T. Houghton and the following decades saw an increased focus on East Africa, particularly the Karamoja area of Uganda. By the 1980s

BCMS missionaries could be found in Spain, Portugal, Peru, Bolivia as well as at various stations in East Africa including Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania plus Morocco in North Africa.
At present the society is governed by its General Council which consists of up to 24 members elected at the Annual Meeting of Members, a representative of Trinity College, Bristol, the honorary Treasurer and the General Secretary. For some part of each meeting, the General Council divides into three committees which take action or make reports for recommendation to the General Council: Education Committee, Finance Committee and Mission Committee. The work of the General Council is guided by the General Advisory Group and the Personnel Advisory Group. The General Advisory Group, which consists of the Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the Council, the Chairman of each of the Committees and the General Secretary also acts as the Standing Committee. The Personnel Advisory Group interviews missionary candidates and makes recommendations to the General Council.
In the early 1990s BCMS changed its name to 'Crosslinks', emphasising the Society's principle that Mission is from everywhere to everywhere.

Committee; Allocations Sub-Committee; Home Committee; Publications Committee; Preparing Committee; and the Field Advisory Sub-Committees. Some minute papers also contain agendas, supporting papers, reports and loose correspondence. Coverage ceases in 1966 and there are no meeting papers until the minutes of the General Council, 1990-1999.
Despite the gaps in existing sequences and the complete absence of meeting papers throughout the 1970s and 1980s, these records provide a rich insight into the organisation and running of the Society as well as illustrating the scope of work undertaken

MS47/A/1/1/2 Candidates Committee, later renamed Overseas Committee
Set of signed minutes of the Candidates Committee which was, during 1955, renamed the Overseas Committee. Minutes cover the years 1935-1939 and 1945-1960. There do not appear to be any record of meetings held during the years of the Second World War. The committee usually met on a monthly basis although there are occasional months when it appears that no meeting was held. Until 1939 the meetings were held in Caxton Hall, Westminster. From 1945 they were usually held at the BCMS offices at 96 Victoria Street and 49 Romney Street, London.
Minutes include consideration of candidates' applications, reports of candidates' interviews, details of applications postponed, information regarding the BCMS men's and women's colleges, discussions regarding the syllabus at Dalton House (the women's college), reports on candidates for home ministry, allocations of missionaries to particular stations, details of home

These sub-committees appear to have been established following a reorganisation of the society's administration after the Second World War. For correspondence and papers relating to this reorganisation see MS47/A/1/3/1.
Minutes discuss the society's missionary work in specific geographical areas. They include recommendations for future developments such as additional mission stations and extra personnel. Financial considerations are discussed as well as the relationship between each mission and the various Dioceses. Other issues explored in the minutes are relationships with other missions; relationships with the government, the diocese and bishops; medical work; and recruitment

MS47/A/1/3/1 Papers relating to reform of BCMS administration
Various files of papers relating to the society's administration following the Second World War. A letter sent to missionaries from the four secretaries of the society's mission fields (Nevile Everard, India; Cecil Johnston, Burma; Edward Paterson, Africa; and Osmond Peskett, South China) indicate that following the war there was great suffering in Ethiopia, Burma and South China. Work in other fields had been interrupted and 'the normal flow of new recruits has been frequently hindered'. A lack of missionaries led to their appeal for 'the urgent need for a constructive and progressive policy' requesting a complete change in the administration of the society. The files of papers include:
/1: Call for a change in administration of BCMS in the post-war era, 1945. Ballot papers for change, original returns
/2: Lists of names of possible supporters of administrative change
/3: Originals and copies of letters sent to Daniel Bartlett and BCMS members regarding new administration of society in 1945. Clarification of interviews with Daniel Bartlett
/4: Duplicates and rough notes regarding a letter to Daniel Barlett, 1945
/5-6: Correspondence regarding reform of administration in 1945. Responses from members in UK and overseas

MS47/A/2 Personnel records
Papers relating to deceased missionaries, organised by BCMS into its mission areas: Arctic, Burma, China, Ethiopia, India, Morocco, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. Many files contain significant volumes of material including application papers, references, medical reports, correspondence with the society and other information such as prayer letters and news reports. A number of files contain papers relating to resignations and retirements.
The papers were compiled by the society and largely comprise incoming correspondence and outgoing copy correspondence. The majority of papers date from the late 1930s although some missionary files contain application papers from as early as the mid 1920s. Some files include telegrams, postcards and photographs. Application papers have sometimes been kept in original packets which provide details of the missionaries' home address, date of birth, date of offer of service, referees, date

placed before committee and biographical information.
The records are a useful source for examining the type of missionary work undertaken, including educational and medical work. Some correspondence illustrates the effects of the Second World War, especially the files of Burmese missionaries who were evacuated from the country. Other themes indicate the language difficulties encountered in non-English speaking countries; and the financial situation of missionaries, especially in relation to pension payments
These files have been kept in the order imposed by BCMS. Consequently, missionaries who served in more than one area may have two separate files. Where this is the case a cross reference has been provided at file level. Alternatively, only one file may exist but includes material relating to more than one mission area: for example, the files of Rev and Mrs William Jarrold are listed under Burma although some of the earlier material relates to Canada where William initially served.
Files within each mission area are arranged alphabetically

Much correspondence written during 1939-1945 relates to the effects of the Second World War on the Burmese missionaries, most notably their evacuation during the Japanese occupation of Burma in 1942-1945. During this time many missionaries appear to have relocated to India. Some papers also relate to the subsequent war damage claims made by the missionaries.
BCMS missionaries first went to Burma in 1924 and concentrated on outreach, medical work and Bible teaching. The BCMS withdrew its workers in 1966 because of a government edict although the Society continued to provide financial assistance

officers of the Society and the earliest bound volumes, which cover 1924-1926, include indexes. There are no issues for 1923, 1941, 1943-1944 and 1946-1951. Coverage for 1927-1940 and 1945 is incomplete.
The publication commenced in 1923 with the secretary of the Society acting as editor. Simultaneously, a children's magazine entitled 'Other Sheep' was issued, see MS47/A/3/1/5. Initially, the 'Missionary Messenger' was produced monthly but from 1942 it became a bi-monthly publication, with the exception of 1952 when, for that year, it was once again produced monthly. From 1972 it became a quarterly publication. The format also changed over the years, most notably in 1952 and again in 1981, although the content remained similar to previous issues.
It appears the publication was sent to missionaries in the field in order that they could keep in touch with the wider work of the society

The title appears to have began as a bi-monthly publication but by the 1970s the publication was issued quarterly. MS47/A/3/1/3 Annual reports
Incomplete sequence of annual reports produced by the society. The title of the reports include 'Record of the Year', 1922-1944; 'Statistical Reports of the Bible Churchmen's Society', 1945-1963; and BCMS Year Book, 1969-1970 to 1980-1981. The sequence does not include any reports from 1964-1968.
The reports list officers and committee members of the society; the constitution and underlying principles of the society; review of missionary work undertaken that year in places such as India, China, Canada and South America including reports from individual missionaries stationed there and some illustrative photographs; work at home and links with churches; biographies of missionaries and recruits, sometimes was accompanying photographs; obituaries of missionaries and associates; notices including information about purchasing society publications and using the circulating library; financial records comprising statements of accounts and

names of subscribers with a list of their donations and gifts to the society; references to, and reports from, the men's theological college in Clifton, Bristol used for training missionaries and the women's college, Dalton House, at Cotham Park, Bristol; and some reports also include lists of missionaries with their stations and the dates of their commission. The first report also includes a history of the formation of the society and details the early literature which was produced.
It was intended that a free copy of the annual report should be provided to each person who subscribed ten shillings or more to the Society. An accompanying letter from the Honorary Secretary, Rev Daniel Bartlett, inserted within the first issue, asks Branch workers to encourage the circulation of the report to increase interest and support in Society work with copies to be sold at one shilling each. The report dated 1944 includes a retrospective account of the society's work and is entitled 'A Record of Missionary Work During the first 22 Years of the Bible Churchmen's Missionary Society 1923-1944'.
After 1944 the 'Record of the Year' ceased publication and appears to have been replaced by 'Statistical Reports of the Bible Churchmen's Society'. This title followed a similar form to 'Record of the Year' and includes lists of committee members and officers of society; details of missionaries, their mission station and date of commission; reports of activities which appears to be compiled by the General Secretary and presented to the Annual Business Meeting of the society; list of gifts, donations and subscriptions to the society; and statements of financial accounts.
From 1969 the annual report was entitled 'BCMS Year Book' which continued to provide background details and reference information about the society's overseas

College was owned by a society and was initially viewed as one of the departments of work of that society. It was under the ultimate control of the BCMS Executive Committee. Missionary courses initially lasted for two years during which time examinations were held in all subjects within the curriculum: Old and New Testament, Greak testament, Christian doctrine, christian worship, christian evidences, church history, comparative religions and christian morals. lectures were also given in homiletics and pastoral theology, in elementary medical subjects, and in elocution and voice production. A separate curriculum for students reading for Holy Orders in the Home Ministry was also established. The length of this course varied according to individual's proficiency and intellectual attainments. Practical work within churches and hospitals in Bristol was also available.
College fees were £90 per annum, although grants were available to candidates accepted by BCMS for missionary work and who could not defray the full cost. There were two reading prizes, competitions for which were held each year.
The men's college was renamed Tyndale Hall in 1952. In 1972 the college merged with Dalton House and Clifton Theological College to become Trinity College

MS47/D/1/3/2 Correspondence relating to the 'Troubles'
Significant volume of correspondence concerning misbehaviour and discipline at the College during 1931-1932, a period known as the 'Troubles'. Includes reports, statements of evidence and correspondence relating to the behaviour of students, in particular the actions of individuals attempting to attract the attention of a waitress in a local cafe.
Material indicates some students felt Sydney Carter, as Principal, did not take appropriate action and Wilfred Moss wrote to the BCMS with his concerns. This was relayed to Carter and much correspondence relates to Moss' expulsion from the college by Carter; his subsequent return following petitions to Daniel Bartlett and the BCMS; and the subsequent resignation of Carter along with the Vice Principal and Chaplain during 1932. Following their departure it appears there continued to be disturbances and conflict within the college for the remainder of the academic year.
