  • TRANSLATOR'S PREFACE

Thanks to Dr. I. D. Serebryakov, we now possess a fine selection of the outstandingcontributions of the Russian IndologiSts of ther 19th and early 20th centuries, which,as edited and annotated by him is published under the title Izbrannye trudy russkikhIndologov-filologov (Moscow, 1962). Stcherbatsky's paper on Scientific Achievementsof Ancient India has been translated by me from this^y^J^e^^.^s^.jjregards the otherpapers included here, thanks are due to Prof. Debiprasad Chattopadhyaya who,on his last visit to Russia, had the vision and the initiative to procure the microfilms oftheir Russian originals with a view to study and publish them.

In translating these papers; I have been fully aware of the presumptuousness of thetask. And I might not have taken it up, if it were not for the boundless encouragementand learned guidance of Professor Debiprasad Chattopadhyaya himselfwho, withhis first-hand knowledge of the work of Soviet Indologists, was the most appropriateperson to guide such a project. In the midst of his manifold activities, he very kindlyscrutinised the manuscript, rectified my errors and suggested suitable revisions. Andfor this, I cannot adequately express my profound gratitude to him. The errors, whichstill survive, are obviously due to my own inadequacies. * . . '*

Professor Chattopadhyaya wa!s also kind enough to accede to my request for acomprehensive Introduction to this volume.

. I am also indebted to Professor Mrinalkanti Gangopadhyaa of Vidyasagar College,Calcutta, for kindly going through the entire mauscript and making very useful suggestions.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the members of the Instituteof Philosophy. Academy of Scinces USSR, on whose kind invitation I had the opportunityof visiting the Soviet Union in 196$ and of meeting the Soviet philosophers and Indologists.

". . 9Apart from Sri Harish C. Guptawho insists on putting some highsounding words

about me in his Translator's Preface and thereby makes it most embarrassing for me evento acknowledge the elementary fact that without his help it would have been simply absurdfor me to work on this project/ am most gratefi to Ifypfe$$or -Mrinalkanti Gango-padhyaya9 Dr. Mahadevprasad Saha and Dr. Alaka\ Chattopadhyaya for help in variousforms.
