Kate has 3 containers of strawberries and there are 18 strawberries in each container. How many strawberries are there in total? 3 X 18 = ?

Step 1: Set up the equation with the larger number at the top.

18x 3

2

Step 2: Work out 3 X 8 = 24

Put the 4 in the ones column and carry the two tens to the tens column. Do this by writing a 2 above the tens column.

2 tens 4

Step 3: Work out 3 X 10 = 30 (then add the 2 tens you made from the ones.)

3 X 10 = 3030 + 20 = 50Write the 5 in the tens column.

Step 1: Set up the equation with the larger number at the top.

Step 2: Multiply 8 by the number in the ones column.

8 X 8 = 64. Record the 4 in the ones column and carry the 6 tens to the tens column.

Step 3: Multiply 8 by the number in the tens column and add any amount you have carried.

8 X 2 = 16 (remember this is 16 tens). Now add the 6 tens you made from the ones.

16 + 6 = 22 (remember this is 22 tens or 2 hundreds ad 2 tens)

Record the 2 in the tens column and the 2 in the hundreds column.
