  • little over ten years ago, there was only a miniscule number of spas in China that could boast of unique, culture and heritage-driven product and service offerings at par with those of the best from Thailand or Indonesia or other well-known Asian destinations

sought after by the world’s travellers for rest and relaxation.

China has had a centuries-long spa and wellness tradition - reflected by the proliferation of reflexology outlets in any Chinese city street. Certainly Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been a vehicle for good health, wellness and well-being in China for centuries. It dates as far back as the Yin Dynasty between 1400 and 1100 BC. In TCM, the body is seen as a whole and everything is believed to be interconnected. When one organ is not functioning normally, this results in an imbalance in the rest of the body. Practices such as herbal medicine, acupuncture, auricular therapy (ear massage), tui na (massage), Qigong (exercise) and nutritional therapy are all part of China’s ancient healing and wellness traditions.

Most of China’s traditional massage and health places, until most recently though, were clinically austere and spartan, bleak places which were not really conducive for relaxation and pampering. But, oh how the Chinese spa and wellness industry, and the Chinese people themselves, have changed!

With Chinese travelers’ higher disposable income, spas in China have undergone a complete make-over, in both substance and style: upgrading their products, facilities and services as well as pushing the innovation envelope when it comes to spa interior style and design, in order that they may satisfy increasingly demanding and more stressed-out Chinese clients and compete not only with the best in Asia but in the world.

With the intense pace of life in China, with congestion, pollution and overwhelming traffic as urban hallmarks, it is no wonder that in order to de-stress, relax and maintain their general wellbeing, people in its cities are frequently resorting to escaping to spas. And people in the Pearl River Delta region are no exception - in this special Spa Edition, Paper magazine delves into an elite selection of the most exclusive health and beauty spas in the country to find out the truth behind the old maxim: “Health is Wealth.” Indeed!

JW Marriott Hotel, Water Wellness at Quan Spa,

Shenzhen’s connection with water can be traced back through its history. Chinese people have always referred to the drains in paddy fields as 'zhen' or 'chong'. Thus, the name 'Shenzhen' literally means 'deep drains'; as a typical part of the southern Chinese Pearl River Delta region, this is a delta characterized by swamplands surrounded by rivers, where deep drains punctuated the paddy fields. In the ancient area of what is now known as Shenzhen, this marshy delta was home to seafarers and fishermen.

In the same way, water, as one of life’s essential elements, has always been inextricably linked to the spa experience. Quan Spa at the JW Marriott Hotel Shenzhen, specializes in offering a spa experience based on water therapies to help move guests towards relaxation, balance and vitality.

Located on level 4, Quan Spa at the JW Marriott Hotel Shenzhen is immediately adjacent to the hotel’s 24-hour Fitness Center. Eight spacious private treatment suites including a Vichy Shower room and two bathing suites, a heat experience area, containing a sauna, steam room, hot whirlpool, chill showers and relaxation areas, comprise the spa facilities. An outdoor pool and movement studio where group classes are offered to guests, are also available. Access to all facilities is complimentary for all hotel guests.

Quan SPA is the only spa of its kind in China to offer a spa experience based on solely on water therapies. The “Hydro beauty SPA” journey begins with a 20-minute “Juvenis 20” micro bubble bath. By releasing millions of superoxide micro bubbles, which are 0.5 millimeter smaller than skin pores, one feels like having a bubble body mask. This advanced product is believed to safely and effectively remove the thickening layer of the epidermis, moisturizing the skin and increasing blood circulation. Skin is left incredibly clean, smooth and radiant.

The “Hydro beauty SPA” Treatment is available at RMB 950 for 80 minutes: Micro bubbles bath (20 minutes) and Aroma body massage (60 minutes). Appointments are required. For reservations, please call Quan Spa at (+755) 2269 8160.

  • China’s Retail IndustryChanging Consumer Market

Moving towards a consumption - and service - focused economic model

Underpinned by the steady rise of household income, China’s retail market has become one of the most lucrative and rapidly growing in the world. China is currently the world’s second largest retail market, and Asia’s largest. It is expected to surpass the U.S. to become the world’s largest retail market by 2016. After years of accelerated growth and annual expansion rates of 10 percent or more, China’s growth in 2013 slowed down to 7.7 percent - level with the figure for 2012. This slowdown in growth is consistent with China’s effort to carry out a major overhaul aimed at weaning its economy off its decades-long reliance on heavy industry, export-oriented manufacturing, state-driven investment, as well as investment in infrastructure. Meanwhile, to rebalance the nation’s economy, policymakers are attempting to shift towards a more consumption- and service-driven model, hoping to foster and sustain more productive growth over the next decade and beyond.

In recent years the Chinese government has been pushing for pay increases to retain public support and boost domestic consumption. Wages have also risen as millions of Chinese move from the countryside into the cities, and as employers struggle to find and retain workers amidst China’s rapidly aging population. According to Bloomberg, salary figures from the first three quarters of 2013 showed an increase of about 11 percent from the comparable period in 2012. Urban residents saw their disposable income increase 9.7 percent last year, or 7 percent when factoring in inflation; in the same period, rural residents’ net income rose 9.3 percent after adjusting for inflation, as per official statistics released by China’s statistics bureau. In 2014, China’s wages are

set to increase by 10 percent or more, which is expected to further boost consumption and drive low-cost manufacturers out of the country. McKinsey’s research suggests that by 2022, more than 75 percent of China’s urban consumers will earn RMB60,000 to 229,000 (US$9,000 to 34,000) a year.

With more money flowing into Chinese households, consumption levels have experienced a marked increase. In December 2013, retail sales increased 13.6 percent compared to the previous year. Chinese consumer confidence reached a record high of 111 points in the last quarter of 2013, according to findings from Nielsen, a leading global provider of information and insights into consumer behavior. Key factors identified were better job prospects and stronger purchasing intentions. Figures for tier-two and tier-three consumers in particular witnessed big jumps compared with the start of 2013. All this supports predictions that consumption will overtake investment as the largest contributor to China’s GDP growth.

According to Nielsen, the top four areas where tier-two and three consumers are using their spare cash are on new clothes, dining out, education funds, and into saving deposits. For 2013, these two tiers contributed almost half of the total fast-moving consumer goods sales. Health and wellness related sectors maintained robust growth in 2013. A few cities with huge growth potential were chosen by Nielsen as examples of the so-called “emerging tier-one cities”, including Chongqing municipality and Suzhou, which are expected to become the powerhouses of China’s future economy.

    An Overview of

  • Class demographics

McKinsey’s research suggests that the upper middle class is poised to become the principal engine of consumer spending over the next decade, labelling consumers with household incomes in the RMB106,000 to 229,000 (US$17,538 to 37,893) range the upper middle class. By 2022, the upper middle class is estimated to account for 54 percent of urban households and 56 percent of urban private consumption.

Middle-class growth rates are expected to be far greater in the smaller and less-developed third and fourth tier cities of the north and west, where disposable incomes are rising rapidly. In particular, the share of upper-middle-class households in third tier cities is expected to reach more than 30 percent by 2022, up from 15 percent in 2002. Meanwhile, the ratio of China’s urban middle class in the four tier-one cities, i.e., Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen, is also expected to decrease substantially by 2022. Sustained growth in the size and diversity of China’s middle class will create new market opportunities for both domestic and international companies.

In addition to affluent and ultrawealthy consumers, McKinsey’s research finds that upper-middle-class ones are stimulating rapid growth in luxury-goods consumption, which has surged at rates of 16 to 20 percent per annum for the past four years. According to Hurun’s 2012 Report, the number of Chinese individuals worth more than RMB10 million broke the one million mark for the first time, while China’s super-rich, defined as individuals with wealth greater than RMB100 million, increased to 63,500 individuals. This means that there is one millionaire for every 1,300 people in China.

    Generational change

Companies should also keep in mind generational change and the effect of differently held values on the consumption behavior of China’s younger generation. According to a study on Chinese consumers conducted by the Samsung Economic Research Institute, the young new consumers of China are a unique class. As a result of the one-child policy implemented since 1979, parents are generous in giving financial support to their children, affording them more comfortable financial prospects and larger budgets.

Unlike the older generation, China’s youth have little experience with hardship and more exposure to different cultures; as a result, they are more optimistic, open-minded and individualistic, caring more about their own independence, freedom and distinctiveness. They judge themselves and others by what they buy and have been exposed to foreign and domestic brands. They love big brands and spend money to reflect their personal tastes, sensibilities and sense of individuality, pursuing self-expression in their purchases.

They are also better educated and informed than previous generations, with a broader vision of the world, motivating them to pay much more attention to environmental and social concerns than previous generations. Companies should adapt to this new generation of young consumers by differentiating their offerings and adjusting their branding and marketing strategies to attract younger consumers.

    Strategies for Market Entry

Potential of second and third tier cities

Currently, China’s retail sector is fragmented. Small independent stores dominate the retail landscape, with the top 100 retailers accounting for only 11 percent of total retail sales. For a long time, companies only set up stores in the downtown areas of first- and second-tier cities of the Chinese mainland. However, with rising rent costs and increasingly fierce competition, large retailers are gradually losing their price

advantage. Meanwhile, in the wake of China’s rapid urbanization, former small and medium-sized cities have gradually developed into large cities, providing tremendous opportunities. This combination of concentration of populations and gradually improving infrastructure are attracting the attention of the international retail giants. Some retailers are therefore shifting their business focus in China from first and second tier cities to third and fourth tier cities. In fact, 58 percent of newly opened stores across China are found in tier-two and tier three cities.

Companies need to keep in mind the varied needs of rapidly expanding smaller cities. Rather than a cookie-cutter approach, companies should design city-specific solutions, including product portfolios, marketing approaches, and operating models tailored to the unique demographics and culture of these cities and the needs of increasingly sophisticated consumers.

    Adapting to the China market

With higher incomes and increasing affluence, consumers are becoming increasingly sophisticated, demanding, and willing to pay a premium for better quality and unique products and services, as well as discretionary goods that are beyond the basic necessities. Competition in the consumer markets sector is also set to intensify as more multinational companies increase their presence in China. Companies should devote time to understanding what consumers are doing, how preferences are evolving, and the underlying motivations of their behavior. As the growth of the urban labor pool slows due to the country’s aging population, companies will need to enhance their efficiency and productivity by planning more strategically, providing appropriate training and improving employee loyalty, as well as utilizing high-tech equipment for automation.

In addition to the traditional physical retail stores, e-commerce and mobile commerce are both boosting retail sales. Digital marketing and in particular social media are playing dominant roles in impacting consumer’s on their purchasing decisions, with influential social media websites, such as Sina Weibo and Meilishuo, providing exposure to a tremendous variety of goods as well as opportunities to share reviews and feedback among friends and users, thus encouraging more customers to purchase online.

Given the growing importance and huge potential of the country’s retail industry, China’s retail market has become too big for international businesses to ignore. For foreign investors eager to grab a share in the booming retail market, setting up a physical retail shop in the country is perhaps the most direct way to tap into the local retail market.

This article was first published on China Briefing.

    Thrillers in Manila:

Manila is often treated as an extremely brief in-betweener by foreign visitors on their merry way to one of the Philippines’ many picturesque, sunshine-kissed islands and palm-fringed sandy beaches, the capital city’s chaotic traffic and pervasive urban poverty an immediate visual turn-off.

But with its rich cultural mix of Malay, Spanish, American, Chinese and Arabic influences, Manila offers up its own unique thrills as long as the visitor exercises patience, perseverance, vigilance and possesses a sense of adventure. “Insider” information - a trustworthy local friend - also helps; on the surface, Manila is not the prettiest of Southeast Asian cities and most of her charms are not overtly available, except to those who have taken the time to get to know her.

For those who’re up for it, discover these thrillers in Manila:

    Hear Me Roar!

tolls-Royce is a renowned English car company founded in 1906 by Charles Stewart Royce and Sir Frederick Henry Royce. Throughout the course of history, the company has had its shares of ups

and downs. The company, however, has always steadfastly produced cars at the leading edge of luxury and refinement.

For a car that is produced in numbers so low and whose production is so expensive, making the vehicle available only for the privileged few, the Rolls-Royce brand is actually extremely well known around the world. Ask any random passerby, even a person who loathes motorcars, and chances are, that person will recognise the name Rolls-Royce.

    The Rolls-Royce Wraith

Shown here is the company’s newest offering, not the traditional limousine it usually offers but what is now known as the Rolls-Royce for people who actually like to drive themselves, if those type of Rolls customers do exist.

The Rolls-Royce Wraith is a coupe that hankers to its illustrious past. A car with a long, huge hood, a short cabin, a sloping fastback and suicide doors! The car’s interior is swathed in acres of glorious, genuine leather. You just know that a lot of handsome cows gave up their lives for this interior!

  • The Wraith is also the most powerful Rolls-Royce in history. Powered by a 6.6 liter, twin-turbocharged V12 engine. Good for 624 bhp. It catapults this behemoth from 0-100 kph in 4.6 seconds. Mated to a silky smooth 8 speed automatic gearbox and an electronically controlled air suspension that re-creates the signature Rolls-Royce “magic carpet" ride.

From the onset, the words of the company’s co-founder, Sir Henry Royce, have echoed throughout its history: “Take the best that exists and make it better; when it does not exist, design it.” The company has hit the jackpot with the Wraith.

You buy a Ferrari when you want to be somebody. You buy a Lamborghini when you want people to think you are somebody. You buy a Rolls Royce when you are ALREADY somebody.

Rolls-Royce expects that the Wraith will sell well in China - currently the company’s fastest-growing market where the Phantom is its top seller- and where they say the Wraith will appeal to current Rolls owners looking for a second car.

The question to focus on when analyzing Argentina-where will it play Mr. Messi at the World Cup? Throughout his international career, which began in 2005, Mr. Messi’s place in the national team lineup has moved all around the field. Will 2014 finally be the year Argentina figures out how to properly use Mr. Messi and unlock the awesome skills and form he has displayed for Barcelona?

On June 24th this year, Mr. Messi turns 27, which will inevitably lead to even more comparisons to his country’s all-time soccer icon, Diego Maradona. Mr. Maradona was 25 going on 26 in 1986 when he almost single-handedly led Argentina to its second (and last) World Cup triumph. It’s worth remembering that Mr. Maradona in 1986 was probably the best individual player during a modern-era World Cup, aided greatly by coach Carlos Bilardo shrewdly managing the entire team around his superstar player at the peak of his powers.

Mr. Messi’s relative lack of success at the international level, in contrast, remains puzzling, although this may not entirely be his own fault. His goal-scoring record - 37 in 83 appearances - is below his rate at Barcelona, but still very respectable. In his previous two World Cups, Argentina reached the quarterfinals. The high point for Argentina was a Gold Medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, with a national squad stacked with talent that included Angel dí Maria and Ezequiel Lavezzi.

Given Mr. Messi’s ridiculously rich success with Barcelona - six La Liga titles, three Champions League wins, two Copa Del Reys - one is automatically tempted to think that all this magic should easily rub off on Argentina in pursuit of the World Cup trophy.

Barcelona has already staked its claim as the greatest club team in soccer history. With Argentina’s national squad, however, Mr. Messi does not have supporting players like Andres Iniesta or Xavi around him. Spain - with a team comprised with the core of Barcelona’s team - has won the last two European Championships and the 2010 World Cup sans Mr. Messi.

Mr. Messi is on the short list of the best players in the world, but plays a position where Argentina is historically stocked with talent: striker. As a result, throughout his 83-game international career, Messi has played all over the field, ranging from striker to wide forward to right midfielder to even a central midfielder.

How Do You Solve a World Cup 2014 pundits have selected Argentina as the second favourite to win, behind host Brazil at 5-to-1, primarily because of four-time World Player of the Year Lionel Messi.

At the 2010 World Cup, Argentina - coached by Mr. Maradona - used Messi as an attacking midfield, dropping him further away from goal, in order to get two other strikers on the field. Mr. Messi was effective enough but didn’t score a goal himself and Argentina went out with a 4-0 loss to Germany in the quarterfinals.

The conundrum is thus: what is Mr. Messi’s best position for Argentina?

The answer for Argentina manager Alejandro Sabella is simple: striker, because this is what Mr. Messi excels at, as demonstrated in recent, record-setting seasons for Barcelona.

Instead of trying to slide Mr. Messi further away from goal to shoe-horn Argentina’s more traditional strikers onto the field, the team should be catered around Mr. Messi and his exceptional talents. If Argentina is serious about winning this year, it should take a page from the Coach Bilardo game plan during Mr. Maradona’s glory days and build everything around Mr. Messi. Mr. Messi shouldn’t be used as a provider to set up his teammates, the rest of the Argentina team should be lined up to feed him and just let him work his magic.

In Brazil this summer, Mr. Messi doesn't need to be Mr. Maradona; he needs to be the Lionel Messi we've seen the past decade on the club level in Spain.

Most fitness goals are doomed before they a

and products only attack one dimension of

fitness at a time. A multidimensional appr

fitness is the only way to get effective result

s that last for a lifetime. In this article, The

    Apollo

Program will give you a simple tip to attack

    each dimension of fitness success.

For most people, it’s really easy to get into a rut. W

ake up, go to work, go eat dinner, go to the gym (o

    the one that just passed.

Even on our weekends, we tend to follow the same

pattern with the same people or places. This patte

    rn is

comfortable, but it is also dull and stifles creativity,

    personal growth, and inspiration.

Despite the drawbacks, there is an evolutionary rea

son as to why our behavior tends toward repetitio

    n.

In the hunter-gatherer days, early humans faced m

any risks that we don’t face today. If they pick the

wrong plant to eat, they could die. If they stroll int

o the wrong bit of forest, a tiger eats them. Repet

    itive

behavior was a successful survival strategy to follow

the same path, or eat the same known foods. This

    is

why it is ingrained in so many of us to find a routin

e and cling to its warm, soft, safe feeling.

However, in modern life, there are amazing oppor

tunities just past the horizon of experiential familia

    rity.

In fact, personal growth and self-actualization cann

ot be attained within your “rut.”

This is why The Apollo Program members recentl

y recruited a guide to take us hiking through unpa

    ved,

unpopulated wilderness trails. We clambered over

boulders and walked through bamboo forests. We

sucked fresh air, and traversed old, shaky bridges.

In short, we had an epic adventure together. Some

people were forced to confront their fear of heights

. Others were forced to persevere in walking far

further than they ever had. But, everyone was for

ced to break out of their rut. All of us are very gla

    d we

    had the opportunity.

After living in Guangzhou for five years, I had no

idea such wilderness trails existed so close to town

    . If

you are more of an urban rat, don’t fret. I’m not p

  • The glamorous Grand Elite Chinese Restaurant sprawls over the main tower in the imposing Grand Bay View Hotel, which gained renown as the first luxury five-star hotel to open in Zhuhai nearly two decades ago. The hotel is prominently located at the heart of the city’s landmark Lover’s Road, the scenic winding coastal promenade fringing the South China Sea.

The restaurant’s main dining hall is expansive and suitably grand while 18 sumptuously appointed private dining rooms, accessible via private elevator, boast either lush mountain views or stunning sea views.

Specializing in haute Cantonese cuisine but also offering Sichuan and Hunan specialities as well as Thai classic favourites, the restaurant promotes its unique Grand Elite Gourmet Culture, with aspirations of delivering fine cuisine with Michelin star excellence standards and as such, its master chefs are extremely fastidious about sourcing and procuring only the finest ingredients for its dishes.

The chefs’ commitment to quality sourcing is such that Grand Elite owns and operates its own mountain farm in nearby Jiangjun Hill where seasonal organic vegetables are grown and free-range chickens, geese and ducks are bred on a healthy grain-fed lifestyle. The farm’s population consist of a wide range of chickens, including Shalan chicken, Wenchang chicken, Qingyuan chicken and Hunan chicken, as well as baby pigeons, green ducks, Maya ducks, Chaozhou geese and turtles. The Jiangjun Hill farm provides the restaurant with superb quality and healthy ingredients for fine-tasting and

    nutritious dishes.

While Grand Elite boasts several outstanding dishes, easily the most memorable stand-out is the Peking Duck, famous for its crispy skin, juicy and tender meat and subtle flavours. Eaten the classic way, with miniature slices on a thin pancake, topped by sauce, minced scallions and garlic - the experience is unforgettable!

With these quirky little personal touches, it’s no wonder that Social & Co., the new bar and kitchen boasting style and substance in spades by Guangzhou newcomer and globetrotter-turned-entrepreneur Aaron McKenzie, has become the neighborhood go-to place de riguer.

Since it opened in Zhujiang New Town, Social & Co. has received a rapturous welcome from Guangzhou residents starved for a casual-chic little bar and kitchen with a style cred elevating it far above the ubiquitous, grubby sports bars, yet with an ambience of warm, homey simplicity that the new, brittle crop of brass, glass-and-chrome fancy restaurants in town somehow lack. Clean lines characterise the bi-level interiors, shades of gray stone and recycled vintage wood walls and floors framing leather banquettes, clusters of wooden tables and modern emperor chairs, punctuated by industrial-style pendant lamps, while a high wooden long communal table belowstairs fronting the long stone bar encourages large parties to linger, graze and share each other’s plates.

People come (and they come in droves, judging from the crowds we’ve witnessed during our visits) to enjoy simple, good food with fresh New Zealand and Australian flavours and drinks, executed well and smilingly served by chambray and denim-clad staff. n the same way that the coastal French Mediterranean towns of St. Tropez and Saint-Maxime are five kilometres apart on the Cote D’Azur, their

restaurant and bar namesakes in Guangzhou are located in Jianshe 6 Malu and Liede, respectively. Alexandre Rous, founder and owner of St. Tropez and the new Saint Maxime, recently opened on Xingsheng Lu Bar Street, deliberately

chose a different location for his latest foray in order to differentiate their offerings.

Mr. Rous grew up with two major childhood passions in his northeastern French hometown of Metz/Nancy: playing soccer and learning cooking from his grandmother. He first visited Guangzhou in 2005 on an adventurous whim and ended up staying, initially nurturing a burgeoning modeling career. Back then, in 2008, he spotted a void for a French bar and restaurant in the Guangzhou market and, deciding to pursue his passion for food and drinks, opened St. Tropez.

Whereas St. Tropez is the brash and loud cousin, with a live band playing and DJs spinning nightly, a magnet for late diners, night owls and boisterous club-goers, Saint Maxime appears to be the more sophisticated, subtle and subdued sister, emitting chill, soulful music and enticing a likewise more mature, polished and elegant clientele.

Saint Maxime flows into three areas, downstairs where there is a long bar area and main dining space, upstairs with a sumptuous space designed for private parties and dinners for about 30 people, including a chill-out lounge space with low sofas and comfy bean bags. Expansive gilt mirrors reflect back the attractively patterned floors, modern chandeliers and neutral-hued leather banquettes lining the walls, giving the illusion of a much larger space.

Mr. Rous likes to emphasize that passion underscores everything that they do at Saint Maxime and given this and his team’s successful track record at St. Tropez, it’s probably not surprising that the cocktails on offer (prices range from RMB 40 to 70) are quite astounding – original, creative and actually delicious – with a focus on using only premium ingredients, good quality alcohol and fresh fruits.

Our favourites include the Passo Bomb, a concoction involving dragonfruit, passion fruit, vodka, raspberry-flavored vodka, rum, syrup, soda water and black current syrup, as well as Poison Apple, containing gin, apple schnaps, honey, soda water “plus a secret ingredient”. Beers range from RMB 20 to 60 while Saint Maxime also carries a decent premium French wine list with a number of Grand Crus and Grand Cru Bourgois labels. For those inclined to dine, the menu relies on new concept French bistro fare - the highlight is a gigantic Tomahawk steak - with the same focus applied to quality ingredients as the drinks. The tarte flambees (RMB 55) – on thin, baked pastry and in various flavours: with chorizo or chicken curry, to name only a couple – will surely be bestsellers.

  • • The Italian Consulate General in Guangzhou has opened a new visa centre office in Tian He district – Guangzhou Dadao - what is the significance of this new office and how does it bring benefits to Chinese and other travelers wishing to visit Italy?

The opening of the new Italian Visa Application Center (Ivac), just in the hearth of Guangzhou, is a very important tool to face the growing visa demand that Italy is experiencing (with increasing rates, year on year, of 20% in average). But, I believe that is much more important to consider the new visa center as a part of a wider visa policy that the Consulate General of Italy in Guangzhou, along with the Italian Embassy in Beijing and other Consulates General in China, is implementing with the goal to change the common mindset that deems visa as an hinder to travel instead as a tool to go abroad. The new IVAC is just a piece of such a new policy that Italy is pursuing in China. In fact, other initiatives have recently been implemented such as the new green channel for individual tourism visa (which allows Chinese citizens to apply for visa without any interview and to collect it in 48/72 hours) or the possibility to apply for visa in one of the Italian consular offices in China regardless the applicant’s “hukou”. In addition, in the new IVAC we wanted a “Galleria Italia”, a space for promoting what Italy can offer to Chinese people. Galleria Italia has already hosted a couple of photo exhibitions celebrating Italy and links between Italy and China (the last one was arranged by the well known sculptor Xu Honfei describing his recent experience in Italy). In Galleria Italia, visa applicants can have a close look of some products of the “Made in Italy”, as a Vespa motorbike at the moment, and, for Chinese students, Galleria will soon present a wide range of opportunities to study in Italian Universities.

    • Please name the top 5 most compelling places to visit and see in Italy – for the benefit of those people who have never visited before? Why these places?

The visitor’s Italian experience consists of more than just shopping or simply sightseeing. With Italy’s rich culture and varied traditions, engaging in local activities and interacting with local people are the best ways for a visitor to enjoy a layered, multi-dimensional travel experience. These are my top five recommendations for Chinese visitors to Italy:

    1. Participate in the Carnevale di Venezia (Venice Carnival) in February. Take your time to discover the unique architecture of the city while experiencing an extraordinary atmosphere and, then, take a tour in the outskirts of Venice visiting the famous villas designed by Palladio – the “father of modern architecture” – and enjoying the rich and peaceful Veneto countryside sipping its delightful sparkling white wine, “Prosecco”.

    2. Attend the Chianti Harvest in September/ October; experience working in the winery, harvesting grapes and wine making; wander through hundreds of wineries of the Chianti area appreciating how many different tastes can feature Chianti wine even though it comes from the same grapes.

    3. Attend the Palio di Siena – a special horse race held every 1st of July and 16th of August. Join this event with local people for an authentic experience. Be there the day before the event, have a walk through the typical narrow Middle Age streets of Siena, taste a very special cuisine celebrating the Palio with local people and, on the day, let yourself be involved in an extraordinary event with over 700 years of history and attracting people from all over the world.

    4. Browse through Rome, the “Città Eterna” (the eternal city), so rich in monuments and history. From Romans to the Renaissance, Rome will offer to visitors a wealth of culture and heritage, always breath-taking. Follow a local guide to explore the city center or get lost on your own – either choice is exciting anyway. Rome really must be visited at least once in own’s life.

    5. Explore Sicily offers visitors Mediterranean culture, art, fragrances and mythological

reminiscences. During the centuries, Sicily has been the land of ancient Greeks, Romans, Normans, Arabs; all are important civilizations that left their own footprint, making the island a rich crossroad of cultures. Find time to visit Stromboli. This volcanic island is truly magic.

    • Italy is famous in China for luxury fashion and style as well as excellent wine and food; what else does Italy excel at in the luxury world which many people may not know about?

Italy is well known to Chinese costumers for fashion and luxury cars, while wine is slowly discovered. As for other luxury products, Italy’s yachts are among the best in the world. Italy is proud to be the first in the world to produce over 80 feet yachts. Italy has got a coastal area of almost 8.000 km which is very attractive for sailing. Both purchasing a yacht and sailing around Italy has long been a fashionable luxury trend, and this influence has started to spread in China. Meanwhile, in Sanya and Zhuhai joint ventures with Italian companies are now contributing developping the yachting industry in China. Yachting offers plenty of opportunties, involving manufacturing, trading, regulations, services, training, marina development, and more.

    • Please tell us more about the Milan Expo – the most influential show in the world after Shanghai Expo, which is happening next year. What is the progress so far?

The Milan Expo 2015 is one of the most exciting events to happen in Italy. The Expo is taking place from May 1st to October 1st 2015 at a 1.1 million square meter Expo site located in Rho-Fiera, Milan. The theme is “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”, so the core emphasis is on food and food security. 147 countries already confirmed their participation to the Expo 2015, engaging more than 75% of the world’s countries, expecting over 20 million visitors.

The design and floor plan of the Expo site is ready. Each country has its own space, with each one coming up with its own pavilion concept, design and structure construction. At this Expo, China has committed to three pavilions, the only country in the world to do so – a National pavilion, a Shanghai corporate pavilion, and a Vanke pavilion.

A visitor who wants to fully explore the Expo should set aside a week to really enjoy all the Pavilions and attractions. Some Tour operators in China are selling tickets to the Milan Expo. Due to the high demand expected, it is recommended to buy tickets from travel agents and tour operators in advance. Of course there will be online and onsite ticketing, but buying from an agent in advance is better. Agents can also advise guests on accommodation and other sightseeing options in Italy and combine it all in very convenient tour packages.

From May to October Milan’s weather is very enjoyable. Summer time is not so hot compared with Guangdong’s and late spring time and early autumn are really the best period to visit Italy.

China is an important market for this Expo, so promotions in China have already begun; the first delegation started promoting the Milan Expo end of last year, with the Mayor of Milan, Mr. Giuliano Pisapia, opening the new Italian Visa Application Center, and this year, the Italian Consulate General in Guangzhou will arrange other promotional events. During our National Day reception in early June, we will reveal the event to the public with more details.

    • Could you tell us more about the Bilateral Cooperation between China and Italy and the Areas of Cooperation between Italy and Guangdong?

Italy and China have both confirmed their commitment to promote the gradual reduction of imbalances in trade balance and investment flows, as well as improving trade access to their respective markets. China is encouraging Italian companies to invest in high-tech sectors, especially in agricultural production, renewable energy, energy efficiency and environment. On the other hand, Italy is promoting into China the governmental program "Destination Italy", aimed at improving conditions for foreign direct investment in Italy.

There are four main areas of bilateral cooperation between the two countries:(1) Environmental Technology and Sustainable Development, (2) Agriculture and Food Security, (3) Sustainable Urbanization, (4) Health and Health Services.

With Guangdong, Italy is ready to provide its excellences in all these sectors, building on the successful experiences achieved in the last years, as it was the case of the Guangdong-Italy traineeship programme which, in 2013, allowed managers of both Chinese and Italian companies to learn each other from their respective experiences. Or, in addition, as in the case of the China-Italy School of Policy that, thanks to the cooperation between Ferrara University and Sun Yat Sen University contributes to the training of Guangdong public officers since 2007. Finally, Guangdong has already got some unique footprint as far as architecture and urbanization are concerned. Just think about the iconic Guangzhou Circle designed by the Italian architect Joseph di Pasquale or to the futuristic Terminal 3 of the Bao’an airport in Shenzhen, really an extraordinary project by the world-known Italian architect Massimiliano Fuksas.

Reactions of first-time visitors upon entering Chimelong Hengqin Bay Hotel’s cavernous grand lobby are almost always identical: eyes widen in wonder, necks crane up, jaws drop as the brain processes what the eyes are perceiving...next is the inevitable grab for the smartphone camera. The amazing visual assault that greets you at what is now China’s largest hotel, only recently opened in Zhuhai, has to be captured for posterity in order to be believed.

With a staggering total area of 300,000 square metres and 1,888 sea-facing guestrooms and suites including specially designated Club Floor rooms with Club Elite exclusive privileges, Chimelong Hengqin Bay Hotel is definitely the largest ocean and ecological-themed hotel in China.

    How to fill this up?

Location is strategic - an integrated part of the Chimelong International Ocean Tourist Resort, which also encompasses the Chimelong Ocean Kingdom theme park and Chimelong International Circus Town, the hotel is five minutes from

Hengqin Port, connecting Zhuhai and Macau, 45 minutes from Jiuzhou Port, with ferries from Hong Kong, and an easy drive or train ride away for metropolitan residents of the Pearl River Delta region feeder cities: Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Dongguan. Large-scale meetings, exhibitions and conventions are also key: the hotel’s luxury event space includes two splendid ballrooms, spanning 3,000 and 1,200 square metres, respectively, and an additional 26 sleekly equipped meeting rooms.

According to Ivan Leung, the hotel’s affable general manager, the Chimelong group, which also owns and operates the Chimelong Safari Park in Guangzhou, the

    living PAPER MAGAZINE

But the real highlight at Chimelong Hengqin Bay Hotel is definitely the array of integrated water activities, including a 1,000-metre Grand Canal connecting the hotel to Chimelong Ocean Kingdom, with water taxis ferrying guests to and fro, the seaside Water Park, Lazy River, Surfing Pool and Dolphin Pool - where lucky guests have a chance to interact and frolic firsthand with adorable dolphins in the water.

ocean theme at the hotel and integrated park in Zhuhai is deliberate, as a key differentiator to the nature and safari theme at the Guangzhou park.

Choices for dining and drinking are diverse, with Chinese, Western, Japanese and other Asian cuisines, at the Coral/Amazon Jungle, Seaview Chinese Restaurant, Fishman Village, Mizu, The

Captain and the Lobby Lounge, Garden Hall and Promenade. Recreation is plentiful, with a 300-square metre fully equipped gymnasium, more swimming pools, both indoor and outdoor, than you can shake a stick at and, though still a work-in-progress during our visit, what looks like an impressive arcade of glossy boutiques to satisfy any shopaholic.

Kingdom Makes a SplashIt reportedly cost between US $ 2 billion to $5 billion to build, depending on which media channel you consume. Much as Macau is now known as the “Vegas of Asia”, it reputedly aims to be the “Orlando of Asia” and it means serious business about getting there.

t features eight theme parks within a theme park, including a 6-million gallon aquarium, the world’s biggest, each park representing an ocean theme,

designed by designed by PGAV Destinations, an American company responsible for creating theme park attractions for Universal Studios, Six Flags, SeaWorld and Busch Gardens. It showcases the world's longest roller coaster. And it boasts one of the world’s largest, incredible, if somewhat controversial, collection of whales, sharks, manta rays, rare dolphins and other aquatic animals.

Chimelong Ocean Kingdom, the theme park of Titanic proportions on Hengqin island, sprawling over Zhuhai’s southern tip, is ready to welcome eager summer visitors, on 2,000 acres of reclaimed land on what used to be South China Sea oyster beds. Owned by the Chimelong Group, owners and operators of what is currently China's biggest theme park - Chimelong Safari Paradise, in Guangzhou - Ocean Kingdom, twice the size of Hong Kong's Ocean Park, three times the size of Hong Kong Disneyland, is also integrated with the Cirque de Soleil-like Zhuhai Chimelong International Circus Town and the palatial Chimelong Hengqin Bay Hotel.

Situated at a strategic cusp of the Pearl River Delta, Ocean Kingdom is easily accessible from Guangzhou by shuttle bus, Shenzhen by ferry, links to Macau by a new bridge and will be an easy 30-minute drive from Hong Kong when the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau bridge opens in 2016.
