Patrick RamosJuly 11, 201510-1758Legal MedicineLegal medicine is also called forensic medicine. It is that branch of science that applies medical knowledge to establish such facts in a civil or criminal case. The importance of this branch is stated in the definition itself. Knowing Legal Medicine as well as how to apply it to legal cases will enable a lawyer to uphold the rights of an accused or victim accordingly. Firstly, with legal medicine, one will be able to pinpoint the cause of death as well as a specific time of the death. This information will enable a prosecutor to prove whether or not the accused can be a valuable suspect ( in a murder case). Secondly, Legal Medicine is essential in rape cases. Medical knowledge will enable the legal counsel to know whether or not there was any penetration at all since it is a vital element in the crime of rape. Thirdly, Legal Medicine will help in determining the relationship of the accused in either a murder case ( helps in filing the proper charge of parricide or murder only) or when it is vital in filing for an aggravating circumstance. It may seem like two completely different aspects of life, but law and medicine may be used to complement each other. A simple fact of knowing when the exact time of death occurred will help in rendering justice or injustice. It will also make the difference between sending an innocent man to jail as well as the time of span he/she will spend in jail ( due to the circumstances that may be proved by legal medicine).
