PAPE EXPRESS Principal’s Message During the month of February we celebrated the Lunar New Year. The primary students met with Bernice Hume to experience an interesting story as well as make dragon puppets. Our junior students met with Wenyun Hua to learn how to design beautiful Chinese painting using specific techniques. You will have an opportunity to see the work at our art show later this spring. We were most fortunate to have professional lion dance presentation in the gym. What made this lion dance memorable was the fact it was the first time this lion had performed and as the principal I was asked to paint some red on its eyes to wish him luck. Thanks to the many families who were able to attend our International Feast. The food was really delicious and we had lots to share. The dessert table continues to be one of our favourites. We were very proud of our student presenters. We had a nice blend of various talents from piano playing to the “cup singing girls”. A sincere thanks to Irene Turjansky and Vanessa Dennis for their leadership in planning, as well as the many parents who helped to set up and take down for this event. It is a lot of work and we greatly appreciate your commitment to this annual event. As always thanks to Gary McPhee for helping with the tables and chairs. Our grade threes and fours have begun their chess lessons in class. We look forward to hearing about their learning over the next while. Karate is going strong and we are proud of our students for their discipline in following all of the rules and expectations for this club. We had the opportunity to showcase our school to 30 delegates from China. These visitors were principals from elementary schools from both rural and urban parts of China. They were most impressed with the work they saw our students performing and they greatly appreciated speaking with some students in their first language. See the photo on our website, http://schoolweb.tdsb.on.ca/ papeavenue/Newsletters.aspx The dental clinic was successful in supporting those students who need to follow up possible decay or cleaning in the next short while. The team commented on how polite and respectful our students are, which is most delightful to hear. You have probably noticed our front door is locked now with a door bell attached. This is in keeping with our local schools. If you are a PCH parent we appreciate you using the side door to alleviate some of the doorbell requests for Rose Marie. YOUR COMMUNITY

STUDENT ATTENDANCE AND PUNCTUALITY

Regular student attendance and punctuality are important in order for students to be successful at school. The Education Act states that it is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to ensure that their children attend school regularly. A student's academic progress depends on regular attendance.

TDSB elementary schools practice the Safe Arrival Program that requires schools to perform a school-home attendance check. Notify the school when your child will be absent. Students are expected to fully participate in learning opportunities and complete all homework assignments and tests when they are absent so make sure your child is getting homework assignments when they are absent.

You can help ensure that your child is in school and on time for classes by:

- being involved in your child's education; - knowing the school's schedule;- communicating regularly with classroom

teachers (use your child's planner to send notes to the teacher);

- calling the school if your child is going to be absent;

- writing a note if your child is late due to an appointment;

- ensuring that your child gets a good night's sleep so that they have the energy they need for the next day.
