MINUTES OF THE 112th ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF THE PAPATOETOE CRICKET CLUB
Held on the 24th July 2018 at 6pm at the Papatoetoe Sports Centre.
President, Nigel Hurst officially opened the AGM at 6.06pm and welcomed everyone especially Auckland Cricket Association’s (ACA) Chief Executive Officer, Iain Laxon as well as all present Life Members. Nigel also made a special mention of Simon Poole and Megan Spiers for all their services to the club over the years.

1. Apologies Peter Ambler, Noel Burnside, Guy Ronaldson, Ian Plummer, Roger Harris, Brett Plummer, Jerry Green, Vijay Soma.
David Price moved apologies to be accepted. Seconded Gary Troup. Carried. Passed.
2. Obituaries David Price mentioned the passing of honorary Vice President, L McEntee.
3. Confirmation of Minutes from 111th Annual General Meeting Peter Boyd moved that the minutes be accepted as a fair and accurate record.
Seconded Neil Ronaldson. Carried.
4. Matters Arising from Minutes: No matters arising from 111th Annual General Meeting minutes.
5. Correspondence: a. Garry wood shared correspondence with ACA around:
i. Health and Safety incident reporting that the club needs to carry out including activity in the indoor centre
ii. Child and Vulnerable Persons Protection Act – which involves providing coaching qualifications and education to all coaches and registering all coaches and umpires with New Zealand Cricket
iii. Pushing to get Coach Developers qualified through ACA
iv. Software program for club management – likely to go with CricHQ
v. Good Sports Initiative
vi. Nigel Hurst queried whether police vetting will also be carried out on all coaches/umpires. Garry Wood confirmed it is compulsory.
David Price moved all correspondence to be accepted. Seconded Gary Troup. Carried.
6. ACA Report Iain LaxonIain Laxon briefly reported on ACA:
a. Successful season for the Auckland Hearts and Aces with both winning one day titles.
b. Age group representatives also had a successful season with the U17 and U18 Girls both winning titles, U19 Boys placing second and U21 girls finishing third.
c. New Black Cap, Mark Chapman and White Fern, Lauren Down
d. Club as a Hub program has been running for 20 years and is still going strong. $700K is invested across the principle clubs and is developing in new spaces.
e. Player numbers plateaued last season. However, the changes to all the junior formats from Year 6 to Year 6 level is expected to make a difference in driving growth with the option of mid-week and weekend modified versions of the game.
f. Umpire numbers increased to 30-40% with a goal to have an umpire at each game of cricket across Auckland.

g. Coach Development Manager role has been created and appointed to help drive coach developers at every club to help support and educate club coaches.
h. School space – mid-week T20s are being introduced to encourage more secondary schools to play where ACA are striving to align school and club seasons to help club and schools work cohesively together.
i. New ground contracts – ensuring there are enough ground staff across Auckland, pitch ratings went up from previous season.
j. International and domestic schedules are due to come out in the next couple of weeks.
k. The domestic competition has been realigned where the women’s T20 will now align with the men’s Super Smash competition introducing more double-headers with the women’s T20 prior to the men’s games
l. Iain Laxon thanked everyone in the room for their time, effort, commitment and passion to the game and the community
m. Garry asked the question around the length of time between the T20 women and men’s double headers as previous seasons, the gap between was too long. Iain confirmed the gap will only be half an hour as opposed to a three hour gap.
n. Gary Troup asked about contracted players outside of Auckland and whether was any obligation around linking to certain clubs and whether there is a process to help balance club teams. Iain responded with needing to improve in that area and mentioned that they will ensure they are a part in that process so teams aren’t heavily stacked.
o. Tessa Hickson questioned non-Auckland first-class women’s players playing in the club competition and whether there will be a similar process. Iain Laxon advised that they are considering introducing a cap around external players playing in one club team and ensuring ACA will have input into where they will go.
p. Peter Boyd asked for an update on the Western Springs project. Iain Laxon responded with there not being much of an update. NZC would like to have the option of Western Springs. Council don’t have a budget allocated for it. ACA not opposed to it but still talking around possibilities with NZC. q. Dennis Currie congratulated Iain Laxon on his appointment as CEO of ACA on behalf of Papatoetoe Cricket Club.
Nigel Hurst thanked Iain Laxon for his time and ACA’s ongoing support of the club.
7. Presentation and adoption of Annual Report and Balance Sheet for 2017/18 a. President’s Report: Nigel apologised for not mentioning Megan Spiers in his report.
Dennis Currie moved that the President’s Report be accepted. Seconded David Price.Carried.
b. Chairman’s Report: Peter Boyd to take it as read. Peter Boyd acknowledged and thanked Simon Poole and Megan Spiers for their services to the club and all the hard work they’ve put into the club over the years. Peter also mentioned that with Simon and Megan stepping down, there will be a lot of changes and is looking forward to some new ideas.
Nigel made a special mention of Simon Poole’s Thank You page in the Annual Report and brought it to the attention of the group.
Gary Troup moved that the Chairman’s report be accepted. Seconded Megan Spiers.Carried.
c. Financial Report: i. Garry Wood confirmed there will be major changes around how the financials will be completed. As per a decision made by the Management Committee, Kolmar’s accountant Aileen Eire will complete the club’s accounts from November onwards where they will be moved from MYOB to a new system called Xero.
ii. Garry acknowledged Simon and Megan’s hard work with the accounts over the past 12 years alongside the auditing of Rodney Price who was also acknowledged and thanked for his extensive work on the accounts.

iii. Garry confirmed that Rodney has audited and signed off the accounts and gave the group a chance to ask questions.
iv. Garry provided a breakdown of the costs:
1. Pointed out that coaching costs increased since previous year. However, Charitable funding also increased and funds outside of club funding was found to help with coaching costs.
2. Rodney completed the task of depreciating all the club’s cricket gear.
3. Motor Vehicle expenses increased due to the additional travel that occurred over the season. Looking at ways to mitigate the costs and funding to help with that. Mentioned Kolmar van could help with this.
4. Coaching/Academy fees increased as a result of increased activity and acknowledged Simon’s ability to collect money.
5. Sponsorship was found to cover costs of the Southern T20 League.
6. Excess expenditure over income is approximately the same amount as depreciation. The loss is almost entirely due to depreciation on fixed assets which was done in line with common accounting practice.
7. Garry opened the floor up for questions.
a. Dennis Currie pointed out that grants make up 50% of the club’s income and whether there is a contingency plan in case applications are denied. Garry advised that the grants will be his responsibility where he will create a grants schedule alongside a long term budget for the club.
b. Gary Troup queried the Share Revaluation difference. Rodney Price and Garry explained that it hadn’t been done for quite some time.
Nigel Hurst thanked Rodney Price for all his efforts on balancing the books.
Dennis Currie moved that the reports be accepted. Seconded Tessa Hickson.Carried.
8. Election of Officers for the 2018-19 Season a. Gary Troup moved that Guy Ronaldson be reinstated as Patron. Seconded Peter Boyd.
Carried b. Gary Troup nominated Nigel Hurst as President. Seconded Peter Boyd.
Carried. c. David Price mentioned that L McEntee be removed from vice presidents and added to obituaries.
d. Peter Boyd moved that the Vice Presidents be reinstated minus L McEntee. Seconded David Price.
Carried. e. Bhupinder Singh moved that the following people be on the committee:

9. Life Membership a) Gary Troup nominated Peter Boyd as a Life Member of Papatoetoe Cricket Club. He joined as a 13 year old and started playing cricket at Manurewa. Peter joined the club in 1979 and has been a member for 40 years where he played through all of the junior and senior grades. His first game for the Premier Men was during the 1987/88 season and finished playing in the premier grade in 1995 after a long and distinguished career before going on to play in the President’s grade. Peter also served as Assistant Club Manager from 1984-87. Peter has also been very actively involved in the club since the development of the Kolmar facility where he is an ambassador for the club and carried on as the grounds person through the change from a cricket club to part of a facility. Peter played a magnificent role in that since 2009 and took on a chairperson’s role since 2012 and is currently our longest serving chairperson.
Gary Troup moved that Peter Boyd become a Life Member of Papatoetoe Cricket Club.
Seconded Neil Ronaldson.Carried.
Peter Boyd thanked the group for being acknowledged by his peers and reiterated that he does his job wholeheartedly for the love of the club and local community. Proud to be here and appreciates all the kind words from everyone.
Peter Boyd to be removed from Vice Presidents list and added to Life Membership lists. Moved by Gary Troup. Seconded Garry Wood.

10. General Business a. Neil paid special tribute to Stephen Money as he is stepping down as Premier Captain and acknowledged what he has instilled in the team. Nigel endorsed the words from Neil around Stephen Money.
b. Dennis Currie shared Ian Plummer’s current health condition and advised he is doing well and will be in hospital for a while but is recovering okay and is currently next to Gerry Green. Ian is still sharp in the mind and is doing much better than he was a few weeks ago.
c. Gary Troup acknowledged Simon and Megan’s services to the club and made a special mention of all the work Simon put in on especially on Saturday mornings and reiterated that it’s all those seemingly small things that Simon put in without any expectations that make our club what it is today. Gary also thanked Megan for all her support over the years as well.
d. President Nigel Hurst asked Garry Wood to present a thank you gift and flowers to Simon Poole and Megan Spiers as a small token of appreciation for all their selfless efforts over the many years they dedicated to the club and hopes that Simon can now sit back and enjoy his life membership.
Simon thanked everyone for their kind words and made a special mention to Iain Laxon for all his support over the years.
e. Nigel Hurst queried whether Neil Ronaldson and Vijay Soma had received their Life Membership photo. Advised that they have.
- Megan asked whether the Life Members board will be put back on. And advised that it needs to be put up.
Nigel thanked everyone for their attendance and to the outgoing and ingoing committee over the past year and continuing to work for this club and thanked Tessa for coming on board, and made a mention of building a membership with the newsletters. Also thanked Garry Wood for his work with the coaching development.

a belated happy 99th birthday for Wednesday, 20th March! What a wonderful innings so far,

PAPATOETOE CRICKET CLUB CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
With another season in our clubs proud history behind us I congratulate you all for the season and
the achievements both personal and within your team environments that were reached.
Whilst results on the field may not quite have reached the heights many aimed for the comradery
and spirit in which the game was played across the club was in the true Papatoetoe spirit and
ethos that we as a club continue to live by. This was no more evident than at this year’s prize
giving where we chose to take a slightly more relaxed approach and the support, laughter and fun
of the night made for a very enjoyable evening.
Our staff, Garry, Regina and more recently Tarryn thank you so much for your patience,
perseverance and time fulfilling many roles. Bhupinder your time dedication and passion for your
club its people and our community I cannot commend you enough for and we are truly indebted to
you for your commitment.
From a management point of view this year has been challenging as different roles were absorbed
by our staff. The cost of running a club continues to rise and balancing the books is a constant
challenge, it has been extremely disappointing the level of non-commitment and support of many
throughout the club particularly in the payment of fees and we will need to seriously address these
peoples involvement in the upcoming season, we cannot continue to be a charitable institution to
a few just so we can meet our number requirements and commitments to Auckland Cricket.
Like all organizations we continue to have to rely on funding for various aspects of the running
of our club and this avenue continues to be our major source of revenue and an area where Gary
Troup’s expertise and knowledge has once again served us well and we are truly indebted to
him for this. Funding makes up over 70% of our income with subscriptions supplying the rest so
it is important moving forward that we seek further sponsorship opportunities and utilize other
avenues such as donations to help in the running of our club, every little bit will help
To all of our sponsors and charitable trusts as well as Auckland Cricket who continue to support
us, thank you so much.
To all our volunteers, coaches mangers , supporters and parents thank you all very much, but we
still require more of you, I encourage you all to get involved in your club in the upcoming season
and beyond, we all need to help out be in large or small contributions so our club continues to
perform and function efficiently.
To all our players, I hope you enjoyed your season and look forward to seeing you back at the club
later in the year when the new season rolls around.
Finally to our President Nigel Hurst, thank you so much for your dedication, unwavering support
and love for our club, your role and presence is greatly appreciated.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT
It is with a very saddened heart I write this Presidents report. In January we fare welled Herby
Plummer. Herb was a life member of our club and right to the end he was having a beer at home
games and following his Grandson Josh who currently plays for our Premier team and is on the
committee. The Plummer family have a long and very decorated history within our club. Herb’s
sons Mark and Brett both played Premier cricket. His Grandsons through both Mark and Shelly
have also represented the club. How fitting that his Grandson Josh was awarded the Mike Reidy
memorial for club player of the year. The night in 1985 when Herby and his bestie Dennis Currie
nominated me for club Captain completely changed my life. I as a very young man had to stand in
front of club legends and give results. Those family names Burnside, Troup, Price, Peach, Hellaby,
Rewcastle. Men who I had looked up to were now looking at me. Great men, great club men. And
how can I not acknowledge the input of the Ronaldson Family with Guy still our Patron and Neil
working closely with our Premier team. Thank you for your continued support. We are and always
will be a family. Congratulations to my old mate Gerry Green on his 99th birthday. To Roger Harris
you make it every year to at least one game Val Harris you are a legend.
We also fare welled recently former club captain Colin Murphy a great club man whose
contribution will never be forgotten.
Peter Boyd was awarded Life membership at last year’s AGM a fitting accolade for one who has
spent decades in service to his club both on and off the field.
I would like to acknowledge the work of Simon Poole and Meghan for their contribution to our club
over many years…. Enjoy your rural lifestyle!!!

GENERAL MANAGER'S REPORT
The past season has been one of massive change. Simon Poole resigned as Club Manager after a long term in that role. He had put hours and hours of his personal time into the Club, far beyond any payment received. He had managed the Club through the huge changes, as we became part of what is now Kolmar and was very effective in significant key areas such as grant funding and subs collection. My thanks go to Simon for all those unseen hard yards and I wish him well in reducing his golf handicap. Along with Simon, Megan Spiers also decide time was up and moved on with Simon. Her efforts in the grant funding applications was one of the reason we were so successful in that area so that is also acknowledged and much appreciated.
Other changes came from New Zealand Cricket and Auckland Cricket with a substantial amount of game format changes both in the area of junior cricket and alternate cricket formats. The sheer weight of reading and trying to put some sense around what was needed to be done by the Club was daunting to say the least. As an example, these changes caused cost overrun in places like the ball purchases when the initial grant was not received, but we needed to provide balls for grades that were specific to the new offerings, so in all we were having to provide 14 different types of cricket balls, when we only had 4 of those types of ball in stock from the previous year. As this was compulsory, and we hadn’t had time to get another grant submitted, this cost came straight out of Club funds.
The Club also spent far more money on the junior section coaching compared to previous year’s. This situation was caused by the use of paid coaches for all the junior team. This was well received by all teams. However indications are subs are likely to have to increase to offset that service to members.
This season we went to the use of Criq HQ as our club database management system. Given we went from paper registrations to online registrations that rely on members to fill them in accurately it is fair to say there were significant challenges with the player data base accuracy and tracking sub payments. After a recent meeting with ACA over this and other matters, it would seem we are on the right track, so we will persevere with CHQ with a view to making it work for us. We have also hired a mobile smart pay terminal machine from ASB so that we can get card payments made on the spot. This would seem to be a good option and much easier to track payments. We have begun using it for collection of the winter program fees and it aids in both collection and accounting for payments so this should become a more effective way of getting the income collected in those cost centres.

The Schools coaching program was of a similar size as previous years, both in individuals coached and coaching’ experiences’ accounted for. For 2019-20 this figure will likely drop a little as the focus will change from in-curriculum time coaching to extra curricula engagement either before school, in break time or after school. With this change in mind, the Club ran a very successful after school pilot project in Bairds MainFreight Primary in
the summer of 2019 with numbers of 50 or more attendees participating on a regular basis. This is the way Aktive KiwiSport will fund programmes in the near future so the Club will be making further realignment starting this year.
In terms of the Club finances, the annual accounts will show a loss of $23,961.
There are a number of factors that have contributed to that loss;
• The Club provided a lot more coaching to the junior sides than in previous years. This included the Friday night midget coaching along with the addition of a Saturday morning competition for Sprites.
• This year saw the withdrawal of Counties Manukau Sport from the primary cluster cricket late in the roll out of the cluster days. That lead to the Club paying for the supporting staff needed to ensure the three cluster days were fully staffed. This model will be reviewed for the incoming season.
• Staff costs were up as PAYE, ACC and Kiwisaver was required to be paid and as more staff were utilised this part of the staffing costs also increased.
• A comprehensive gear audit was done which highlighted the amount of club stock was obsolete and was subsequently discarded. This impacted on the Profit and Loss balances as well as the Balance heet.The Club repaired as much as was feasible through an agreement with Cricket Express. Unfortunately that was not very much
• We needed to buy replacement basic equipment stock for the incoming season, but there was an additional cost to that because of the stock of new gear depreciation also went up.
• Although we were successful with more grant applications so that grants received went up, the total income comparison was down about $7K.
• This income dropped in key areas. They were contestable funding that we had received from ACA for the previous season that we did not receive again and subs outstanding.
• A grant from Aktive was not forthcoming due to internal restructuring and the NZCT grant was smaller than previous grants received.
• There was also the issue of a couple of key grants not aligning to when purchases were needed to be made.
A grant schedule is being prepared and will be aligned in the budget for the next three years at an estimate of a 50% success rate
Changes have also been made in the way that the accounts have been analysed in the past. With a new Club Accountant and a new accounting software program system it will take a year for the changeover to bed itself in but I remain confident that these changes were needed and will beneficial in the long run.

For 2019 I will be recommending a subs rise to the incoming Committee in most grades along with a stringent no play until subs are paid rule. Collection will be supported by the use of the eftpos terminal as mentioned in another part of this report.
Management CommitteeThe efforts of the following people on the Management Committee as always, was appreciated and valued by me. The Committee provided sound advice and were supportive in any initiatives that were proposed. Both the Chairman and Gary Troup were very good sounding Boards which I really appreciated.
The big push was always for the bigger picture and the best thing for the Club.
Thanks to Nigel, Peter, Gary, Tessa, Regina, Josh and Josh. Also thanks to Bhupinder in his tireless efforts off and on the field to make this the best little Club in Auckland
StaffThe Club hired Aileen Michie in the role of financial manager. Aileen’s expertise and acumen has also been invaluable in moving the Club to a sound accounting balance and structure that provides essential checks and balances. Tarryn Barthow has been working tirelessly in bringing the membership database into manageable shape heading into the new season.
In heading into a new season, many of the new changes will have been debugged and our systems will be in much better shape. The Committee will be presented with a working budget by the first Committee meeting that will ensure that the end of year profit and loss schedule will not be in deficit for next season.

The beginning of the 2018/2019 saw the Premier Squad lose a number of experienced cricketers
making it tough for the squad to continue to build on our efforts from last season. However, in my
first season of captaincy I could not have asked for more from our very talented yet very young/
inexperienced side.

the scenes that continues to help with the
functioning of the premier team, Bhupinder
your leadership and dedication to this side
being a coach and a player is second to none.
John ' General ' Lee once again thank you
for your efforts every Saturday, whether it
be getting the drinks ready, helping with the
covers, telling us your crazy stories and for just
being our number 1 supporter week in week out.
Brett Patterson big thanks for taking up the
scoring duties every Saturday. Neil Ronaldson
for taking on the selecting role. Vijay Soma for the constant effort and belief you have in your
team and club in a somewhat tough season for our reserve side. To the life members and Old Boys
who made their way down when possible to support us, your efforts mean a lot and we hope to
continue to see you next season.
We once again started our season with a trip to Mt Maunganui to try to establish some team
bonding/culture and incorporate a preseason fitness session into this weekend, which Stephen
Money loved as he stood on the beach with his ice cream watching the lads busting their guts. It
was a great weekend, lots of fun and laughs but also a time to outline our goals, standards and
expectations we wanted going into the new season. It was good to welcome the new faces to our
squad who would prove to play crucial parts to our season.
Leading into our first game away against East
Coast Bays, we were feeling good in our ability
to carry on from last season and grab a win first
up. However, we were comprehensively beaten
and as captain I quickly established that there
was a key aspect of our game that we were
missing. Our side has all the talent in the world,
the missing ingredient was just our cricketing
awareness, knowing how to go about things in
certain situations and being aware of what stage
of the game or what the opposition is looking to
do and being proactive to counter that. It was
good we identified this issue after the first game
as we were able to work on it moving forward.

Standouts for me this season were Josh Plummer. His 2nd season with Papatoetoe and he really
thrived this year. His brutal approach at the top of the innings saw us get off to some cracking
starts with the bat taking the game away from the opposition within the first 10 overs on many
occasions. Josh almost achieved something unheard of in the 2-day comp where he was set to
bring up his 100 before lunch on day 1, but unfortunately was dismissed on 97 just 3 balls shy
of the lunch break. Our bowling unit this year was a young one, our new seamer Daman Bhatti
showed some real potential in his ability with the new ball and is definitely someone to watch
in the next few seasons. Harshal Vyas joined us from Suburbs New Lynn and boosted our off
spinning attack with some crucial spells throughout the season. Once again however Bhupinder
Singh led the way playing only about half a season he continued to roll through the opposition
batting line-ups with ease. Most of the playing group just don’t know how he does it, he has not
bowled a ball at training for the last 2 years!
The christmas break saw us say goodbye to our Premier Captain and great friend Stephen Money
who has departed on his OE with his wife. Firstly, to do a bit of travel around Asia and then to
London where he will be taking his explosive stroke play and cricketing wisdom to play in the
English leagues during their summer. We wish you all the best Stevie G and hope to see you back
in the red baggy in the near future.
Stephens departure made way for our overseas professional Jake Dunford. Jake is a Jersey
international wicket keeper batsman who has been applying his trade in a number places around
the world and found himself flying into New Zealand on the 1st of January to Join up with the
Papatoetoe squad. Jake was just everything you ask for out of an overseas player. His work
ethic and desire to improve his game was absolutely second to none. He added that sense of
professionalism to the side as well as having a great sense of humour and being the nicest
bloke you will ever meet. Jake has since departed on his way back to London and from there will
compete for Jersey in an attempt to qualify for the 20/20 World cup. We look forward to watching
his progress. We are also looking to get him back next season and hopefully for an extended
period of time.
My first season as captain has been a challenging one but I have learnt a lot about myself and the
game. I am looking forward to preseason now and with the rebuilding we have done this season
hoping we can push for some silverware in the 2019/2020 season. Thanks again to everyone who
has helped out this season, we look forward to seeing you all next year.

PREMIER WOMEN’S REPORT
The 2018/19 season started with full of energy and potential with
the addition of two new experienced heads, one of which was
Toni Baldwin from Takapuna Cricket Club and the other, Northern
Spirit’s Mereana Hyde. We also welcomed back Tetiare Mataora
after a season off to recover from knee surgery, as well as Samoan
International, Taofi Lafai who skipped a season. The rest of the
team were back for more fun and what ended up being a roller
coaster season with a promising start, an inconsistent middle, and a
strong(ish) finish.
Unfortunately, our start-of-the-season hopes and dreams of finishing
in the top two was not to be. Despite a strong start with first-up wins
in both the T20 Pearl Dawson and One Day Prichard Cup competitions, we were unable to string
together enough wins throughout the middle stages of the season to move up from the bottom
two. However, on a positive note, we did manage to avoid the wooden spoon twice by winning our
final games across both competitions against Parnell to take fifth place.
Even though we had a lot of inconsistent team performances, there were plenty of individual
highlights and milestones along the way:
• Our biggest highlight was Lagi Otila Telea finishing
the season with the most MVP points across the
Premier Women’s grade and was therefore, awarded
the Women’s Auckland Club Cricketer of the Year
with 352 runs and 23 wickets.
• Maiden half-century for Lagi Otila Telea with an
unbeaten 75 off 50 balls against Howick Pakuranga
including 11 fours and 3 sixes.
• Maiden half-century for Feala Vaelua with 59 runs
off 34 balls against Cornwall including 6 fours and
4 sixes.
• The opportunity to play two matches on Papatoetoe’s number one against Howick
Pakuranga and Parnell.
• 13-year-old Kiri Anderson debuted for the Premier Women in a T20 match against Cornwall
and also claimed her first premier wicket, which was the big wicket of Auckland Heart,
Saachi Shahri.
• 15-year-old Tayla Maika debuted for the Premier Women in a 50 over match against Howick
Pakuranga on Papatoetoe’s number one.
• Toni Baldwin and Mereana Hyde played their first game for Papatoetoe against Waitakere/
Auckland University where Toni scored 50 off 82 balls and Mere took 2/35 off 9.1 overs to
contribute to a good first up win.

PREMIER MEN RESERVES’ REPORT
We went into the 2018/19 season having lost a number of experienced players that had moved on
for various reasons, this however meant a huge opportunity for young players such as Ritap Gill,
Ronnie Singh, Sukhdev Singh and Rihaan Sayed to cement their positions within the side. Fielding
such an inexperienced side was reflected with our results where we were not able to perform
consistently enough to win games of cricket each Saturday and therefore be in contention for
championships. In saying that the younger players would have learnt a lot about what it takes to
not only perform at Reserves grade but also Premier level.
The one-day competition started of with an away defeat to a very experienced Eden Roskill side
who would later go on to play the One Day Final against Suburbs. This was followed by a rain
affected loss against Suburbs and then a quick transition into the two day competition.
We unfortunately started off the two day campaign in similar fashion to our one day competition
with a big first innings loss against a strong Parnell side, however managed to hold on for a draw.
Prabhjot Rehal who had moved over from Eden Roskill before the start of the season played a
mature and match saving innings going on to score 100 not out and deny Parnell the outright.
The next two two-day games were crucial for us to get our season back on track and so it turned
out to be. Playing our first two dayer at home against Cornwall got off to a very poor start after
being put into bat being 35/6 half way through the first session. Some cameos down the order by
Kamal, Jack and Ronnie meant that we were able to fight ourselves to a sub par but defendable
total of 139. The remainder of the day belonged to the opening bowling duo of Ronnie Singh and
Jack Shimmin who tore through Cornwall’s batting line up bowling them out for just 86 finishing
with 5-23 off 12 overs and 3-13 off 9 respectively. The second day was rained out meaning that
we weren't able to push for an outright but nevertheless a confidence boosting first innings win
against a strong Cornwall side. This performance was then backed up by a first innings win against
Waitakere bowling them out for 209 and then narrowly missing out on a bonus point by being
bowled out for 228. Again rain played its part in denying us a chance for an outright. This brought
us back to the One day competition to take us through until Christmas break. A narrow loss to
East Coast Bays losing out in the penultimate after posting 189/5. A few drop catches in the field
turned out to be our downfall. This followed a tough loss to Cornwall. We finished the one day
competition in 7th position only managing a win against Waitakere.
The two-day competition however was a different story where we were in contention right
unti the end. Round 4 got us a much needed first innings win against Eden Roskill where were
made 222 with Kamal Yadav being at the forefront of our innings scoring 84, being denied a 100
after running out of batting partners. Roskill looked comfortable for most part being 70/2 end of
Day 1. Day 2 started with Roskill reaching 120/2 but big fightback meant we went on to bowl out
them for 206. The win meant we went into the match against table topping Suburbs with a lot of
momentum. However, Suburbs showed why the were the best side in the competition and winning
both titles by putting on a clinical outright performance against us. A tough loss to North Shore
and a low scoring first innings loss against East Coast Bays where both sides scored less than 100
all but ruined our chances of winning the two-day competition. An individual performance to note
was the bowling performance Rihaan Sayed two 5 wicket bags and 19 wickets in the last 3 innings.
Batting was our biggest weakness this season, unable to put on competitive totals consistently
and meant.

that majority of the time our bowlers were defending sub-par totals. Whenever we posted even a
par total we always looked a good chance to win which is a real positive. Overall I think this season
was one of development and in which particularly the young players can learn a lot. We would have
to be by far one of the most talented sides in the Reserves grade, however we were also one of
the most inexperienced sides. This goes to show that experience plays a major role in being able
to close out tight games and win championships. With the right attitude this team can go a long
way towards winning a title in the upcoming seasons. A special thank you to Vijay and the rest of
the senior players in the side that made my first season as a Reserves captain a very smooth one.
Thrown into the deep end at the start of the season, it was definitely a huge learning experience.
It has been a huge honor to represent this team and club and something that I will remember for a
very long time to come. Thank you to all the players and coaches for making this season another
exciting one. I look forward to seeing everyone next season.

This season was a refresh, after an awful 2018 saw us relegated.
A new grade and many new faces meant we were able to assert ourselves, and in doing so play a
style of cricket that best suited our team – results came with it.
In the One Day section we started with a massive score, 365 against Birkenhead. However the
following week, we lost on a drizzly day at Kumeu. The bad days would prove to be the anomaly,
with only one further loss against us.
The final One Day round saw us demolish a good Parnell side, with VC Tejinder carrying his bat for
137*. Our winning margin of 207, saw us leap two spots up the table to finish 2nd – a crucial step in
the season story for us.
In the two-day section, we began with an Outright win over HP, declaring early after a counter
attacking innings of 104 from Daniel. That gave us plenty of time to chase down the 102 needed
in the 4th innings for the best possible start. That would prove a nice buffer, as the 2nd round was
curtailed by rain. Into February we once again we given a reality check by Kumeu, but in avoiding
an outright loss limited the damage.
The following round we went within a whisker of beating Takapuna – scoring 148 of the 169
needed before running out of overs. That saw us into the competition lead, and we consolidated
that with a big win over Cornwall, after rolling them for 65 on the first day. Going into the last
round with a 6 point lead, we need only beat Suburbs on first innings to take both the comp and
championship. However the westies tipped us over for 58 in the first innings, setting up a tense
final day. Needing to now win outright, we took 5/21 on the second day, to set up a run chase of
182 for glory, and were coasting at 150/3. However, the drama wasn’t over. Suburbs came back with
7/28, to steal the game by 3 runs, and apparently take the title as well.
After the calculators came out, we were revealed to be the winners, on bonus points, by a wafer
thin margin of 0.13 points (or 13 runs). A win is a win, as the saying goes, and for us – redemption
after the disappointment of 12 months ago.
Individually it was a fantastic year, but really it was our collective strength that drove our success.
Bowling wise we led the comp, only once failing to bowl out our opposition. We were led by Ovick
(29wkts), Sajid (28wkts) & Gurmeet (27wkts), but we also had fantastic service from several others
– Prashant, Bobby, Sandy and Kulvir all had spells of form through the season.
With the bat it was another collective effort. This was led by Ramandeep who averaged 56,
and scored two of the six centuries made this summer. Daniel owned two of the others, in his
comeback season, and will score plenty more on first impressions. Special mention to Tejinder for
scoring his maiden hundred (followed up with a 90 a few weeks later).
Well done everyone on a successful team campaign. Something to build on for next season in a
new grade.
