Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Greetings, Kia ora, Talofa lava, Malo e lelei, Kia orana, Fakaalofa lahi atu, Namaste!
Our year has finished on an high note with our academic prizegivings, our annual sports awards and celebrations of student success. We wish to acknoweldge our two local MPs the Hon Judith Collins MP and Anahila Katongata'a-Suisuiki for honouring us with their presence at our senior academic prizegiving on the 22nd of November. This year has been a very significant one for our school with many highlights, which we have covered in our newsletters and facebook page. With a number of staff departing for new destinations, we look forward to the year ahead to welcome our new team members and the contribution they will bring. I wish you all a very happy and safe Christmas season.

Papakura High School Charitable Trust
Early in 2017, the New Zealand Herald produced a short documentary film and ran a printed series entitled ‘Under the Bridge’, following the school life of three students and the new Principal at Papakura High School through the year, 2016. This engendered much interest from the local community, from past students, and from people all around New Zealand and the world. Two past students approached Principal John Rohs with the desire to form a charitable trust to support the education of today’s students at ‘their’ school. After a year or more of meeting and planning, The Papakura High School Charitable Trust is now launched and ready to start fundraising. The trustees are Jo Clegg (nee Babbington), Clare Fogarty (nee Gasson),
Michael Talbot and Rosalie Freeman. Jo, Clare and Michael are all ex-students of Papakura High School, while Rosalie is a member of the Board of Trustees. These people are all passionate about this school and its students and would like to give back to the community by raising funds for the school. The purpose of the Trust is to further the education and welfare of students and the wider school community of Papakura High School, through financial assistance, clothing, books, equipment, use of facilities, counselling, scholarships, outdoor education and other appropriate assistance. You can help us in this mission by spreading the word about the Trust to past students and people who may be interested in assisting us. If you would like to know more about the Trust, or feel that you can assist us in any way please check out our page on the school website, www.papakurahigh.school.nz/charitable-trust , or email us at [email protected]. Please pass on these contact details to others. If you would like a copy of our Trust brochure it is available from the school office, or a digital copy is available by emailing us at the above email address.

During the first week of the term break, a group of 10 students went on a YHC Snow camp, ac-companied by Angem Din - the School Nurse,
Ms Powell, and Kent Christensen. For most of the students it was their first time even seeing the snow, which was exciting enough in itself! Above: View at breakfast time

YHC Snow Camp
The students got to spend the whole day on the mountain, skiing and snowboarding.
On the way back the group stopped at Taupo for lunch and at the Huka Falls. It was an awesome trip and the students involved represented themselves and the school very well the entire time.

Teacher Only Day
On Monday 26 November we held a staff only day. Amongst other parts of the professional development, teachers were asked to construct a visual representation of what our curriculum will look like in 2019
Year 9 Inquiry
In the last 4 weeks of term all Year 9 students have been engaged in an inquiry learning project. The broad focus of the inquiry was 'cultural connections' and students were able to work in groups or individu-ally researching an aspect of culture that they were interested in.
Above: Jacqueline Tairakena, Amethyst Taiapa and Jaydene Raharuhi of 9KIR presented their Inquiry which was around Food in Culture.

New Zealand Secondary Schools Sports Council Fabian Broughton, our school sports co-ordinator, was unanimously nominated for the prestigious Innovation in School Sport Award. Criteria for the awards are: “The award recognises initiative in school sport that is deemed to be exceptional in providing quality sporting opportunities for secondary school students”.
In making the award, it was noted that Fabian had successfully implemented the Whānau Sports Day as a response to major disengagement from students and staff at the school athletics day. While still including the athletics component, the fun games, team building activities and challenges that all students can participate in has seen the ‘non-participants classroom’ go from full to empty.
Junior Volleyball Championships Day 1
Junior Volleyball Championships has been a massive learning experience for our teams who are playing against some top quality competition. Our boys going down to Macleans College, Rosmini & Kia Aroha. Our girls going down to Westlake Girls, Botany Downs and Otahuhu. Our teams move into their respective pool stages tomorrow with first games starting at 9am.
Junior Volleyball Championships Day 2
Some quality teams out there competing and showcasing their talent. Our girls going down to MAGS, Massey and had a close battle against Orewa College, going down in the final set. Our boys went down to Tangaroa (2-0), won against Auckland Grammar (2-1), won against One Tree Hill College (2-0), and won their final game against Botany Downs (2-1). A Big thank you to our student officials/ Coaches and staff for looking after our wonderful students during this massive event.

Our team at Papakura High is absolutely thrilled with the new flooring surface which has been laid by Absolute Resurfacing. It’s not only the magnificent appearance and the gloss finish of the product which make our gymnasium floor look brand new again, it is also the amazing improve-ment on the grip of the surface—the non-slip feature of the surface has greatly enhanced the safety of the facility, and we are thrilled and proud to have this enhancement to a very popular and heavily used facility in our school.

Staff Farewells
This term we are farewelling five members of staff, Abe Warren, who was Head of Māori, Rachel Fagan from the Music department, Regan Pretorius, Head of Technology, Richard Minton, Technology Department and Shona Muir, Enrolment Officer. We farewell Matua Abe, who has been on study leave during 2018, enjoying a break from his mahi at Papakura High School. Mauta Abe will be fondly remembered for his enormous involvement in a wide range of extracurricular activities, ranging from kapa haka to basketball, league, rugby and many other sports over the years. Appointed in 2011, Abe was promoted to HOD Māori in 2014. He has been a teacher who cared deeply for the wellbeing of the students in all of his classes and who shared his love of te reo Māori with all of them. Regan Pretorius It has been a pleasure to spend the last three years leading and teaching the students of Papakura High School. I have met some amazing staff and students here over the years, but it is now time for me to bid you all farewell. Baie Dankie (many thanks) for having me as the Head of the Technology department and I wish the school Senior Leadership Team, Middle leaders, the Board of Trustees, Kaiārahi and all the staff the very best for 2019 and beyond. Time to say Au revoir. Kind regards, Regan Rachel Fagan During her years of teaching at Papakura High, Rachel has made an enormous contribution to the life of the school, which countless students have appreciated, as well as their whanau and families. In addition, she has played a vital part in the wellbeing of her colleagues. As a teacher and as a dean, Rachel set the highest standards, as well as sharing her love of music in many ways, both in and outside of the classroom. We wish you all the best as you set out on the next part of your life’s journey. Richard Minton Kia ora koutou katoa Ko te mea nui o Te Ao, he tangata, he tangata, he tangata. (The most important thing in life is the people, the people, the people). Please remember this. Twelve years has been a long time and during this time I have met some remarkable people within and around my work at Papakura High School. I would like to thank the staff and students I worked with over the years and wish you all a successful future. Kind regards and kia kaha a koutou. Richard.
Shona Muir It is hard to believe that it has been thirty years since I started at Papakura High School as a Teacher Aide in the Experience Unit. My four daughters all attended Papakura High, and I served on the Board of Trustees for several years before taking up an administration position within the school. Since then, I have held just about every administration role - Reception, International Students and Homestays, Gateway and finally, Student Administration and Enrolments for the last 15 years. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here and I know I will miss the daily contact with my friends and colleagues. Papakura High School has been a huge part of my life, and I will always feel fortunate that I have had the privilege of contributing to the success of the school.
Year 10 Art Exhibition
This year we wanted to end the year on a high and have an exhibition just for our junior students, as we have many talented students in our junior school. We had a small opening on Wednesday 5 December, which saw many students selling their art. The students helped hang the art and put out the refreshments for the opening. Marion Koiatu created the beautiful poster.
