HEAD COACH ERIC DOOLEYEric Dooley was named Prairie View A&M University’s head football coach on December 22, 2017 and is entering his second season at the helm of the Panthers. In Dooley’s first season on the Hill, the Panthers became the first team in history of the program to score 60+ points in three game. PVAMU ended the year with back-to-back 60-point games against Alabama St. (66-13) and Texas Southern (60-14) while recording the largest margin of victory over the archrival Tigers in program history.

PVAMU set a school record with 815 yards of total offense in the 62-13 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff in which QB Jalen Morton set a single-game school record with 255 rushing yards.

Dooley, the 33rd head coach in program history, arrived to The Hill after spending the previous four seasons at Grambling State University as the the offensive coordinator (2014-17), including one year as quarterbacks coach (2014) and two years as the receivers coach (2016-17). Dooley helped Grambling State to three consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference Western Division titles (2015-17), two SWAC Championships (2016-17) and an HBCU National Championship (2016). While at GSU, his offenses averaged at least 31 points per game in all four seasons, and ranked first or second in the SWAC in scoring offense each of the last three seasons. In 2016, he was named American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Assistant Coach of the Year. Under Dooley’s guidance in 2015, Grambling ranked fourth in the nation in scoring (41.3 points per game), scored 65 touchdowns, and averaged 470.0 yards per game. Dooley’s offenses have produced the SWAC Offensive Player of the Year in three of the past four seasons (QB Johnathan Williams 2015, QB Devante Kincade 2016-17). A pair of players during Dooley’s tenure are currently in the NFL: wide receiver Chester Rogers (2016 UFA, Indianpolis Colts) and wide receiver Chad Williams (2017 3rd round pick - Arizona Cardinals). In three seasons as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Arkansas-Pine Bluff (2011-13), the Golden Lions offense improved each year under his direction. In 2011, quarterback Ben Anderson earned SWAC Freshman of the Year accolades while ranking second in the league in passing offense. In 2012, UAPB set a school record for wins (10), and won its first outright SWAC Championship since 1966 and were crowned HBCU National Champions. During Dooley’s tenure, tackle Terron Armstead became a third-round pick by the New Orleans Saints in the 2013 NFL Draft. Those seven seasons as offensive coordinator were preceded by 14 years as an assistant coach in various roles at Southern University (1997-2010). In his one season as running backs coach (1997), he helped to produce a pair of All-SWAC rushers, including SWAC Player of the Year, Steve Wofford. As receivers coach at Southern (1997-2010), he developed the two most prolific receivers in school history (Michael Hayes, Juamorris Stewart). Dooley played wide receiver at Grambling under legendary coach Eddie Robinson (1985 – 1988), winning two SWAC Championships. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from Southern University-New Orleans (1999), and his Master’s degree from Southern University (2005). His professional playing experience includes earning a free agent contract with the Canadian Football League’s Calgary Stampeders, one year with the AFL’s Arizona Rattlers and one year with the World League’s Taipei Dragons (China). He also spent time coaching at his alma mater, Alcee Fortier Senior High, as the wide receiver coach, and as offensive coordinator at McMain High School, both in New Orleans.

Some of his off-field activities include being a member of the American Football Coaches Association as well as being a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated.

Dooley and his wife, Alicia, enjoy the gift of three children, Taajah, Katerra, and Dy’mond.

PANTHER FOOTBALL PREVIEW2019 PANTHER FOOTBALL PREVIEW The Prairie View A&M Panthers are set to begin their fourth year in Panther Stadium at Blackshear Field and their second season under the helm of Head Coach Eric Dooley.

In Dooley’s first year as the head coach the Panthers finished the 2018 season 5-6 and 4-3 in conference play, while finishing with a .571 winning percentage in league play. PVAMU earned their first win (40-24), during the 2019 SWAC-MEAC Challenge against North Carolina Central. The Panthers opened conference play at Arkansas Pine-Bluff with a huge 62-13 win, with Dooley contining his winning ways in conference play defeating rival Grambling State 22-16 at the 93rd State Fair Classic, halting PVAMU’s four-game losing streak to the Tigers. The Panthers finished the 2018 season strong with a big 66-13 win against Alabama State before closing out the year with a 60-14 victory over rival Texas Southern.

OFFENSE PVAMU will be returning the top offense in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The Panthers had no problem putting points on the board averaging 33.5 points per game. The rushing game played a significant role with the Panthers averaging 202.2 rushing yards per game. Dawonya Tucker played a key role finishing the 2018 season ranked third in rushing yards with 1,101 yards and an average of 100.1 rushing yards per game. Quarterback Jalen Morton had a 89-yard run which was the second longest run in the SWAC for the 2018 season. Morton had 874 yards and averaged 79.5 yards per game to solidify his spot as fifth in the SWAC in total rushing yards and rushing per game average. The Panthers run game showed under Dooley that it must be respected,

“You have to have a strong running game to compete in this conference,’ Dooley said.

The Panthers led the conference with 2,825 passing yards and averaging 256.8 passing yards per game and leading the league in passing touchdowns. Jalen Morton ranked second in the SWAC with a passing average of 214.9 yards per game, throwing for 2,364 yards for the season. The Panthers ranked second with 6,153 total yards, averaging 473.3 total offensive yards per game in the 2018 season. The key for the Panthers this season will be to take what they did during the 2018 season as well as the spring and take it into the 2019 season.

“I saw some really good things during the spring football season, and quite a few guys that understood the system a lot better,” Dooley expressed. “I also felt that some of the guys understood what we are trying to get through to them as a team. The assignments were there and that was the pleasing part of it all. The effort was there and that was what I was looking for and what I am looking forward to going into the fall.”

DEFENSE The Panthers defense has some big shoes to fill as the team is heading into the 2019 season with the loss of some top defensive players to include seniors defensive end Quinton Bell, who was drafted by the Oakland Raiders, and linebacker Anthony Stubbs, a free agent signee to the Cleveland Browns.

“I am going to miss those guys,” said Dooley. “I am happy for them and wish them much success. I knew we were going to have to fill those voids so I made some earlier assessments during the recruting periond. I went out and got some mid year guys that could make an impact with the team immediately. We will need some experience at this point in time.”

PANTHER FOOTBALL PREVIEW The return of Drake Cheatum -- who had 53 tackles in the 2018 season -- and Ronald Collins (51 tackles) led the underclassmen in tackles. Jason Dumas finished top 15 in the SWAC with four sacks and nine tackles for loss. The Panthers defense was strong against passing offenses holding teams to 172.7 passing yards per game. The return of AFCA FCS All-american, Ju’Anthony Parker, which led the Panthers with three interceptions for 32 yards last season, also led the conference with 12 passes defended. Teammate Jalen Harris ranked in the top five on the team with ten passes defended in the 2018 season.

SPECIAL TEAMS Caleb Darbone lead the team with 934 punting yards, averaging 38.10 yards per punt this season. Zach Elder averaged 38.10 yards per punt and connected on 70 percent of his field goal attempts. The Panthers special teams core came a long way and will look to continue their growth in the 2019 season.

”We had some growing pains at first,” Dooley said. “The guys we had were young, but they grew and I thought they got better as the year went on. Those guys came a long way and I am actually pleased and satisfied. We are going to put our best 11 on the field at all times.”

THE SCHEDULE Dooley enters his second season with the Panthers and they have a challenging schedule, with an important FBS game against the University of Houston in week two, with PVAMU’s home opener versus Nicholls State to follow. ESPN will host five games that include the Panthers: Aug. 31 versus Texas Southern, Sept. 7 against Houston, Sept. 21 against Alcorn State and a contest versus Southern on Oct. 12 will each be shown on ESPN3. ESPNU will host the Thursday night home contest on Oct. 24 against Jackson State. Dooley is excited about the broadcast the schedule. “Anytime you get an opportunity to get your university on television nationwide it’s exciting and a great feeling.” Dooley said.

This season will be Dooley’s first year experiencing the Labor Day Classic during the actual Labor Day weekend. “I’m excited to open up this season with the Labor Day Classic,” Dooley said. “This will be an experience that I look forward to.” In the last contest against the Tigers under Dooley he led the Panthers to a dominating 60-14 win.

The Panthers will go into week two with a trip to they University of Houston, and Dooley and the Panthers are up for the challenge. “I think the schedule should be challenging, to see where you are.” Dooley said. This will be both Dooley’s and Dana Holgorsen first time meeting as head coaches.

The Panthers will host Nicholls (Sept. 14), Arkansas Pine Bluff (Nov. 9), Jackson State (Oct. 4) along with Edward Waters (Nov. 16) and Virginia-Lynchburg (Oct. 19), which were additions to the schedule this season. “ We had to make sure that we gave our fans more than a couple of games to come see.” Dooley said. Virginia-Lynchburg is set to be the homecoming matchup for the Panthers, and Edward Waters will be the final home game in Panther Stadium for the 2019 season. PVAMU will also host the Grambling State Tigers for the 94th State Fair Classic at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. The Panthers will close the season out against Alabama State during the Turkey Day Classic, for PVAMU will be their homecoming opponenet on Nov. 28 in Montsgomery, Ala. The last time the Panthers faced the Hornets, PVAMU won 66-13.

“The ultimate goal will be to win.” Dooley said. “With such a challenging schedule we want to end up playing on December 7 in the SWAC Championship. The biggest goal is to win the Championship.”

The Panthers will open their season Aug. 31 at Texas Southern inside BBVA Compass Stadium with kickoff set for 5:30 p.m.

PANTHER HISTORY The first football coach at Prairie View was H.B. Hucles, who began in 1924. Before Hucles’s arrival at Prairie View, the school played two games without a coach on record: a 1907 7–0 win against a team from Wylie, Texas and a 1920 7–6 loss to Tuskegee University.

Prairie View’s most recognized and celebrated coach was William “Billy” Nicks. Nicks was head coach in 1945–47, assistant coach in 1948–51, and head coach again in 1952–65. His record for 17 years was 127-39-8. He led the Panthers to eight Southwestern Ath-letic Conference championships and five black college national championships. At the Panthers’ peak under Nicks, Eddie Robinson was said to dread playing Prairie View.

Nicks was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1999. Nicks was named the American Football Coaches Association’s recipient of the Trailblazer Award. The award was presented posthumously at the AFCA Kickoff Luncheon on Monday, January 7 at the 2008 AFCA Convention in Anaheim, California.

Prairie View is recognized as the first historically Black university to create and play in a post-season bowl game. The Prairie View Bowl was played in Texas from 1929 through 1961.

The Panthers won Black college football national championship titles in 1953, 1954, 1958, 1963, and 1964. Additionally, PVAMU won Southwestern Athletic Conference Championships in 1933, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1954, 1958, 1960, 1963, 1964, and recently in 2009. Notable football players that have achieved success in the National Football League (NFL) are National Football Hall of Fame Induct-ee Kenny Houston, who played for the Houston Oilers and Washington Redskins and Otis Taylor, who won a World Championship with the Kansas City Chiefs in 1969. On a small note of significance, Charlie “Choo Choo” Brackins, who played from 1952–1955, was the first HBCU alumnus to play quarterback in the NFL.

The end of Jim Crow caused a significant talent drain for all HBCUs. Nicks had been able to stem the tide somewhat by persuading many of the state’s black high school coaches to continue sending their players to Prairie View rather than to a predominantly white school. At one point, nearly all of them had played for Nicks, and owed their jobs to him. Usually, a single phone call from Nicks was enough to persuade one of Nicks’ former players to send a prospect to “The Hill.” However, Prairie View’s fortunes sank rapidly after Nicks retired in 1965. The Panthers would only “officially” finish above .500 twice from 1968 to 1989. This included winless seasons in 1974, 1979, 1983, and 1984 and a 28-game losing streak from 1982 to 1985. They managed a .500 record in 1988 under coach Haney Catchings—their first non-losing season since 1976. However, that win was forfeited after the season due to an ineligible player.

Prairie View bottomed out when it returned to the field for the 1991 season. The team did not have any scholarships because only 150 alumni responded to a request to help raise a scholarship fund. The Panthers did not win a single game until 1998. The 80 con-secutive losses spanning parts of nine seasons (including two losses to close the 1989 season) almost doubled Columbia University’s 44 straight losses between 1983 and 1988.

The streak finally ended with a 14–12 victory over Langston on September 26, 1998. However, that team only had 15 scholarship players. The road back was difficult; the Panthers only won a total of 23 games between 1998 and 2006.

On November 10, 2007, Prairie View clinched its first winning season since 1976, and only their second since 1967, with a 30–27 victory over traditional power Jackson State University under then head coach Henry Frazier, III.

In 1999 the SWAC moved to a new divisional format with Western Division and Eastern Division champions to play for the SWAC Championship. On November 14, 2009, it clinched its first SWAC Western Division Championship by defeating Alcorn State. The next weekend would see the Panthers go undefeated in the SWAC by defeating Arkansas Pine Bluff and securing an 8–1 record; their only loss during the season was to New Mexico State. They finished the season by winning the SWAC Championship on December 12, defeating Eastern Division Champion Alabama A&M, 30–24, in the SWAC Championship Game. They exited the 2009 SWAC football campaign with an unblemished 9–0 SWAC conference record. They were led by their quarterback, 6 ft 4 in, 225-pound KJ Black, who led all quarterbacks in the SWAC with a passer efficiency rating of 168.1 their SWAC second-leading rusher in Donald Babers that averaged 5.2 yards per carry.
