PANMURE

POST

SEEING STARS AT PGC PGC members volunteering to help at the R&A Girls’ Amateur Championship scheduled at Barry later this summer will not be alone in talent spotting the golf superstars of the future. Such is the status of the Championship and the quality of the field that the R&A expect

around 50-70 coaches from US colleges to be at the event, with offers of places and scholarships at the top US schools.  It is also the final counting event for this year's Junior Solheim Cup being played at Gleneagles.

Past winners include Anna Nordqvist (Sweden) who is a regular LPGA tour winner and Solheim Cup player; Mickey Walker who is a former Tour player and multiple winner who also captained the very first 4 Solheim cups; Suzanne

Petterson (Norway), 2-time major winner and 8 times Solheim Cup player; and Georgia Hall, current British Open champion.

The R&A are hosting a Championship dinner on the Friday, and no fewer than fifteen former

winners have already confirmed attendance

It is worthy of note among these illustrious names that our Ladies Captain, Mary Summers, is a former runner-up in the event.

2019 being the 100th playing of the event makes this year’s Championship even more special.

Volunteers are very welcome and can sign up on the main noticeboard.

Bill Dryden, our Senior Past Captain, turned 90 at the weekend, and the Past Captains and invited guests attended a surprise luncheon at PGC to celebrate the occasion.  W.A.S. Dryden joined Panmure in 1953 (66 years ago) and was Captain in 1983.  Also the author of the History of Panmure Golf Club published in 1995 to mark the 150th anniversary of its foundation, Bill is an Honorary Life Member.

MANY HAPPY RETURNS

RESULTS Spring Meeting Prize winners: On a windy day that made scoring very difficult, Campbell Baxter’s outstanding gross 75 won the MacLachlan Medal (first scratch) (originally presented by the first Club Captain, Mr MacLachlan in October 1845) and his Net 65 (75-10) won the Gourlay Cup (Hcap) as well as the Veterans’ Cup (Over 55 Hcap). Ross Munro won the W Craig Thomson Medal (second scratch) with a Gross 76.

Prize winners: Ladies A hotly-contested competition saw some new names appearing on the

silverware. Angela Crabb won the Silver medal (scratch) with a gross 82. Jayne Ferguson had a fantastic, round picking up the Silver Handicap Trophy for the best net score in the Silver Division with a net 69. Hilary Wallace pipped Gillian Anderson in the bronze division, winning the Bronze Medal with a scratch 99. (BIH) and Anne Anderson came in with a net 74 to collect the Bronze Handicap.

The annual LPGC v St Rule GC match was played over Panmure on the last Wednesday in May, with LPGC achieving a convincing 4-0 victory this year.

The Captain of St Rule, Eileen Marshall, presenting the match trophy to Lady Captain, Mary Summers.

Seniors The Seniors have now played 12 matches, the most recent ones being against Royal Burgess (win), Blairgowrie (win), Dalhousie (win), Ladybank (loss played over 9 holes due to bad weather) and Royal Aberdeen (win). To date the Senior Section have now played 12 matches: won 7, lost 4 and one match halved. Senior Section Members have been advised that due to difficulties in raising teams against Monifieth and Downfield Golf Clubs it was decided that these fixtures would not be included in next year’s matches and both Clubs were informed of this. It was subsequently decided by both Monifieth and Downfield not to play this year’s fixtures. However, an alternative fixture against Deeside Golf Club has since been arranged to replace the Monifieth match.

Scottish Golf 9-Hole Championship 7 teams took part in the qualifying event held at PGC last month, with Pat Sawers and Mary Summers emerging as narrow winners (with a better combined inward half) over Kenny Fraser and Scott Malcolm. However, as Mary and Pat are unable to play in the Final, Kenny and Scott will take their place. We wish them the very best of luck at Milnathort.

The Annual Jazz Lunch took place on Sunday 9th June.  Although the weather was not as kind as in previous years, the assembled 60 Members and Guests had a most enjoyable afternoon of good food, good music, fine wines and excellent company.

We had a new band this year – The Jazz Collective – a four-piece group who

provided a selection of easy-listening tunes.  The decoration of the Hogan Lounge kept up the Jazz theme with table flower arrangements in music score vases.  The event was well organised by Social Convener David Sim and many of the guests vowed to be back next year!

A great afternoon with good food and very enjoyable music, we will back next year

THE JAZZ LUNCH

The course is now beginning to spring into life, with clear definition to fairways and rough now beginning to seed. The average midday temperature for this month was 13.5 degrees, with 83mm of rainfall recorded.

Greens After a very slow start to the season due to the cooler temperatures, surfaces are now beginning to pick up. They are either being cut with hand mowers or triple mowers to achieve a sward height of 4mm. Rolling is being undertaken every other day to maintain speed and trueness. A light application of fertiliser has been applied to all greens, with the 14th green requiring a slightly different fertiliser to help boost vigour. Wetting agent applications are ongoing, with added tonics to maintain plant health. Throughout the summer season, light, non-disruptive aeration will be carried out in the form of star slitting and hydro-jecting. The annual meadow grass seed heads have once again appeared, although much less than in previous years. This slight imperfection is short lived and controlled with light brushing and grooming. Surfaces remain virtually weed free, but a blanket coverage of herbicide will control small colonies of pearlwort that have appeared.

Tees/Approaches Both areas are now being mown at 6mm twice weekly. A liquid feed containing a herbicide has been applied to all tees. Wetting agent applications are ongoing Approaches have been fertilised and received a separate application of weed control. Wetting agent with added stimulants similar to greens are ongoing.

Fairways All fairways are now being cut twice weekly, with boxes. A full divot programme has been carried out with good a quality divot mix and fescue yellow jacket seed.

Paths A few grass paths still remain a little weak in places. Another liquid and granular fertiliser have been applied to promote more top growth and help fill out. A further granule fertiliser will be applied in the coming weeks. Wetting agent and stimulants will continue to be applied over monthly periods.

Rough The weaker areas of semi rough damaged during last year’s drought are now beginning to recover. Extra applications of fertiliser have been used to help boost vigour and establish fresh seedlings. The marram grass planted to the rear of the 14th green is now anchored into the sand. A selective herbicide has been applied to this area to control nettles and willow herb.
