• Studies and the SHoCMed project show the heterogeneity in the legal frameworks regulating aquaculture: concepts, definitions, competence, rights, institutions, etc.

• Aquaculture faces significant challenges that call for supportive policies

• The aquaculture industry must have a suitable legal framework which should include all the conditions for its practice as well as guarantees of the rights and obligations of aquaculture licenses holders. The lack of clear, concise regulations with the division of tasks between administrative authorities may generate overlapping of areas of competence and delays in procedures
