Student leaders form an integral part of the school community and aid the development of the school. Teachers have encouraged students to take part in leadership roles by creating more key positions in the student body, which include the advent of a prefect system in DCB since the summer of 2010. The prefect system was made by selecting several Year 12s to act as authorities to enforce school discipline. It is lauded as an opportunity to become role modLels for lower year groups as well as establish a prestigious status in the school community.
However I have started to think that compared to the availability of student leadership, the number of tasks the prefects undertake is rathLer small. To take prefects as a primary examLple, there seem to be only three visible tasks of prefects: opening the main entrance door every morning, standing in front of the entrance door of the Alleyn Theatre during assembly, and standing in front of the Lakeside Café every lunchtime. Of course, I assume that the prefects have other responsibilities, but those are not as evident as the three tasks mentioned above. Frankly speaking, the most noticeable job of the current DCB prefects is as door openers.
“ A prestigious status”The number of prefects and the amount of work carried out by them does not seem to correspond. Even though it might be my own personal opinion, appointing 20L25 prefects to ���� ���� � �� ���� ������� ��� ��� �������� ���labour. The Head Girl, Deputy Head Girl, Head Boy and Deputy Head Boy, who are heads of the prefect body, execute the ‘main’ jobs, and the school attempts to give more meaningful roles to them by allowing them to host assemLblies but what do the Heads truly do that is acLtually more meaningful? Their job descriptions which were handed out to all year 12’s before the application process are quite long and comLprehensive but through closer examination, it is clear that there really isn’t much. Examples include: “Host and organize assembly”, “WelLcome guests to school”, “Run elections for the Student Council Executive”, “Write an article for the Yearbook”, and so forth. As you can see, most of these duties will only occur once a year. How many assemblies have we had this year, and how many times have you seen the Head prefects host them? How many times will we need the head prefects to write ‘an article for the Yearbook’ and ‘run elections for the Student Council Executive’ during a prefects term? Once.

Furthermore, I also examined the job de@
scriptions of the average prefects and realized
that there are so many duties listed on the de@
scription that do not seem to be carried out.
Such include: “Design and maintain a prefect
board”, “Host assembly, as directed by the Stu@
dent Leadership team”, “Seek opportunities to
develop the role of prefects in the school, and
the school itself”, and more. Where is this so
called ‘Prefect board’ that they are suppose to
design and maintain? Do we even know who
the current prefects are this year? And are the
prefects really “seek[ing] opportunities to de@
velop the role of the prefects in the school”?
The way I see it, they have yet to do so.
Need evidence? For those with short skirts, un@
tucked shirts and unbuttoned top buttons, I
������� �������������� ��������������������warned you about your ‘inappropriate look’. Mr.
Lynn’s famous saying “Tuck in your shirt” has

to keep the school in order, but it seems that
few prefects actually care about whether or
not school rules are strictly followed, even if
their main responsibility is to enforce school
discipline. If the school wants meaningful
jobs allocated to the prefects, it should choose
a fewer number of them. In other words, it
would have to reduce quantity in favor of
quality, because the prefect roles and duties
are explicitly stated in their job descriptions
however it seems that few prefects are actu@
ally adhering to their tasks.
Although the role of this year’s prefects has

Many students may believe that their roles

school. If the school wants to prevent such
an incident from occurring, they should

‘Seek[ing] opportunities to develop the role

self”. Prefects must seek opportunities to
represent their school themselves through
participation of various school events and
becoming more proactive in their roles.
