PANDIT DEENDAYAL PETROLEUM UNIVERSITY (PDPU)

Energy and energy infrastructure are critical to any economy for the development and sustainability. India has recognized this fact and has embarked upon a comprehensive strategy to address the concerns of energy security of India. The need for a resource center was anticipated to keep pace with the fast developing and competitive energy industry, to plan for the future and to continuously build requisite intellectual capital and human resource skills.

Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University’s 100 acre campus is located in Gandhinagar, which is the capital city of Gujarat and located 23 Km North from a well developed city called Ahmedabad with a population of 8 million people. The city is famous for its remarkable cultural development and social life.

PDPU offers multiple courses ranging from engineering, arts and management along with maximum exposure and opportunities to its students through various national and International exchange programs with Best Universities worldwide. For development of its faculties and staff the University endeavors for various Joint Exchange and Research programs.

HISTORY OF PDPU

Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU) has been established by GERMI as a Private University through the State Act enacted on 4th April, 2007. The University offers programs to address the need for trained human resources in the domains of Science, Technology, Management and Humanities. It intends to broaden the opportunities for students and professionals to develop core subject knowledge which are duly complemented by leadership training interventions, thereby helping the students to make a mark in the global arena. This objective is being further addressed through a number of specialized and well-planned undergraduate, post-graduate and doctoral programs as well as intensive research projects.

SCHOOLS@PDPU

School of Petroleum Management offers M.B.A. in (a). Energy & Infrastructure and (b). General Management , Ph.D., Post Graduate Diploma in Petroleum Management for Executives (PGDPM-X) and Management Development Programmes.

School of Petroleum Technology offers B.Tech., M.Tech. and Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering. It is academically engaged in creating a high quality talent pool for the hydrocarbon sector across the entire value chain.

School of Technology offers B.Tech. in the fields of Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Industrial, & Chemical Engineering, besides the Ph.D. Program. It also offers M.tech in Nuclear & Solar Engineering.

School of Liberal Studies offers four year Bachelor programme in the field of Liberal Studies, M.A. in Public Administration/International Relations /Political Science as well as the Ph.D. programs.

ABOUT SCHOOL OF LIBERAL STUDIES (SLS)

The School of Liberal Studies is one of the constituent schools of Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University that offers four years Bachelor degree program in B.A. (Honours), B.B.A. (Honours), Bachelor of Commerce (Honours), and Bachelor of Science (Honours) along with a Diploma in Liberal Studies. Established in 2009, SLS ranks among the country’s pioneer establishments that impart higher level education in this unique field. The School has successfully started its B.Com. (Hons.) program in 2013 and B.Sc. (Hons.) program in 2016.

The focus of SLS is to act as a knowledge center for students who aim to pursue multi-disciplinary studies and cover an expansive base of varied knowledge in fields such as Languages, Literature, Aesthetics, Management, Entrepreneurship, Humanities, Social Sciences, Mathematics, Pure Sciences, Political Science, and General Studies. At the same time, SLS helps students to develop specialized understanding of disciplines by covering ‘majors’ such as Business Administration, Economics, English Literature, Public Administration, Psychology and International Relations.

At SLS, our sincere endeavor is to promote intellectual growth, creative expression, analytical thinking, and rational thought through a comprehensive teaching methodology, myriad of courses, and a sound infrastructure. Situated 25 kilometers from Ahmedabad, the sprawling and lush campus of the School and University boast of a state-of-the-art academic infrastructure and the latest in technology that collectively enable our students to get a robust educational foundation and evoke pride in their alma mater.

Students at SLS study 30 subjects in the first two years of their degree, exposing them to wide-ranging subject areas, thereby giving them an opportunity to choose their area of specialization or ‘major’ after due consideration and thought. In the last two years of the degree, students complete rigorous coursework in their declared major and minor subjects.

The pedagogical methodology of the school is based in class room interaction, research projects, group work and presentations, real-world experiences through internships, cross cultural collaboration with international universities, and workshops. Our strategic partnerships with The University of Houston, University of Oklahoma, University of Tulsa, and the American Jewish Committee provide our students experience of international culture, academic life and the latest developments in their area of study. In addition, through our many award winning student activities, organizations and clubs, students get the opportunity to explore different extracurricular aspects of college life, which include sports, dramatics, Model United Nations, and inter college competitive events, among several others. Overall, our teaching method ensures that students acquire a well-rounded education and come out of college as intellectuals and confident leaders of tomorrow that are equipped to handle a multitude of challenges of a dynamic global workplace.

The School also offers Master’s degree programs in Public Administration, International Relations and English Literature as well as Ph.D. programs.

NCC AT PDPU

In 2012 boys NCC troop at PDPU was opened under 9 Gujarat boys battalion, Ahmedabad. 50 vacancies for boys wing was given to PDPU. Mr. Anilkumar Markana had been selected to lead the boys NCC troop at PDPU. Mr. Markana had undergone for three months training at Officers Training Academy, Kamtee, Nagpur. He had successfully completed the training and got commission as Lieutenant in 2015. He had achieved DG battalion at the end of the training.

In 2015, girls NCC troop at PDPU was opened under 1 Gujarat Girls Battalion, Ahmedabad. 50 vacancies for girls division had been given to PDPU. Ms. Khushali Purohit was given charge to lead the NCC girls wing. As Ms. Purohit was a C certificate holder she got direct commissioned as Lieutenant rank. She had undergone three months training at Officers Training Academy at Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh in 2015. She had completed her training with many awards in Leadership, Yoga IP, National Integration Awareness Program, Rifle shooting. She had been awarded by Commandant Medal and Sharma Cup for displaying excellence in leadership qualities.

EXPOSURE TO NCC AT SLS

In 2015, the School had announced ‘Exposure to NCC’ as a compulsory subject for first year BA/BBA (Hons.), B.Com. (Hons.), and B.Sc. (Hons.) students.

Objective of the Program

Citizens build the community and the community shapes the citizenry. For youth of today, belongingness to the nation is imperative. The geo-political borders of the nation are guarded by brave soldiers but it is also an obligation of all citizens to contribute to the unity and integrity of the country. The Exposure to NCC is designed to inculcate the spirit of nation building in its larger implications and to instill the willingness to serve the nation.

WORKSHOPS ORGANISED FOR THE STUDETNS

• Heritage Walk o The 600 years old city of Ahmedabad (1411 A.D) has some of the finest

Indian-Islamic monuments and exquisite Hindu and Jain temples. Its carved wooden houses are another unique architectural tradition. To experience the glory of Ahmedabad it is necessary to walk through the 'Walled City' and truly observe the nature of its rich and varied architecture, its art, religious places, its culture and traditions. Objective of the prog was to create awareness among students about the key historic areas in Ahmedabad old city that helps them to relate to the historic parts of the city in a more personal and intimate manner. The walk commences from the early 19th century Swaminarayan temple Kalupur, encompasses 20 main spots besides numerous areas and aspects of the old city and concludes at the famous 15th century Jama Masjid. Hence the Walk is popularly known as the journey of 'Mandir to Masjid'. The Heritage walk was conducted by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.

• Photography

o Photography workshop provides a basic understanding of the technical aspects of black and white photography involving camera operation, exposure control, film processing, print enlarging and finishing. The students become familiar with photographic materials, as well as artistic composition and design. The objective of this workshop was to provide a basic understanding of the visual and technical skills to students. It covered all aspects of black and white photography involving camera operation, exposure control, film processing, enlarging, print finishing and presentation of the final image. In addition, the class had been introduced a variety of historical and contemporary photographers as well as issues and theories within photography.

• Block Printing

o Hand Block Printing is one of the most famous traditional art of Rajasthan. During this workshop students got developed their skills in block printing and also gained experience by learning and working alongside skilled craftperson. It was very interesting to see how the prints were hand made with small wooden blocks, usually with different colors extracted from nature. The workshop focused on creating awareness in students about basic skill that goes into making a single piece of a block printed fabric. They got to print their own piece and at the end carried their creation with them while learning a craft to be used in future for various purposes.

• Adventure cum Nature Study program o Students were taken to Sembal Paani, Banaskantha for Adventure cum

Nature Study Program. Sembal Paani is a tribal village in Banaskantha about 180 kms from Ahmedabad. These places are unique and surrounded by dates trees, open scrubland and farm lands on hillocks of Aravalli. The two-day camp involved caving, trekking, knots, bird watching, star gazing, GPS Navigation, cross country trek to Digmo and Rathi along with flora and fauna introduction.

Objective of the program was to build self-confidence, self awareness and self esteem into the students so that their self-imposed limits get decrease and they try learning new things. It expands appreciation for the outdoors, including physical activity and natural surroundings. Facilitate cooperation by working as a team and interacting positively in a community setting. Overall, the program cultivates a “winners’ attitude” into the students.

• Warli Art o 400 yrs old Tribal Art Form Warli art originated in Thane Dist. of

maharashtra, western part of India, This art is a 2 dimensional, with no perspective or proportion. Warli painting is simple and linear with the maximum use of triangular shapes. It also represents fertility as the tribal belief revolves around the cycle of Birth and Death. Aim of the workshop was to provide a platform to students, to learn its history, origin, the forms, symbols and icons, material handling. To learn how to create a work of art that visually depicts their narrative by learning how the Warli tribe used abstract art to tell stories from daily life.

• Ceremonial Parade on Independence Day

o On the occasion of Independence Day 2017, a Ceremonial Parade was held at PDPU. Students were selected to perform the ceremonial parade on the day. This teaches students the fundamentals of marching, voice commands and uniform preparation.

• Ceremonial Parade on Republic Day

o Students took part in parade to celebrate the Republic Day at PDPU. Participating in the parade provides a means, through ceremonies, of enhancing the morale of Students, developing the spirit of cohesion, and presenting traditional, interesting and well executed parades. It boosts the pride, dignity and sense of belonging of Students.

• Drill

o Regular drill sessions had been scheduled for Exposure to NCC students. The main objective is to inculcate a sense of discipline, maintain as well as improve on the respect and unique pattern of long held traditions and ethics. To aid in disciplinary training by instilling habits of precision and response to the leader’s orders.

• Improve bearing, smartness in appearance and turn out,

• Create self confidence and • To develop the quality of immediate and implicit obedience to

orders.

• International Yoga Day Celebration o Students had participated in International Yoga Day. The aim was to develop

the habit of meditation among students so that they can enjoy more peace of mind and self-awareness, which is essential for a stress-free existence.

• Vegetable Dye Paining

o The process of making vegetable dyes is one of the oldest forms of art and dates back to the dawn of Civilization. The beauty of vegetable dye painting is that it is very eco friendly form of art, all the materials used are basic house hold items and are organic. The materials used in making the colors are Heena Mehendi, Turmeric, Dhaudi Flower, Magenta, Harda Powder, Kattha, Indigo, Imli Powder etc. With the experimentation and gradual development the vegetable dyes have resulted into a highly refined art.

Objective of the workshop was to provide a platform to Students to learn and understand 300 years old art form. They were taught about history of the ancient art, process of making eco friendly/natural colors out of basic ingredients, conventional method for dying and painting etc. Students had prepared beautiful art work i.e. various type of mata ni pachedis in the workshop.

• Japanese Kite Making Workshop

o Learning Japanese language is in the curriculum of SLS students, so to know more about the culture of Japan we organized this workshop

• Gandhi Ashram o To make the students aware about the Mahatma Gandhi ji’s life

• Fire Safety Drill & Disaster Preparedness Drill

Objectives of the workshop was; o To teach students the various facets of preventing fire and how to act

smartly and save lives rather than create chaos in a fire mishap. o Appreciate the importance of fire safety organizations and fire emergency

planning o Educate the students about the techniques and procedures required for the

inspection of fire protection systems.

• Heritage sites visit

Sun Temple, Modhera The Sun Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to the solar deity Surya located at Modhera village of Mehsana district, Gujarat, India. It is situated on the bank of the river Pushpavati. It was built in 1026-27 AD during the reign of Bhima I of the Chaulukya dynasty. It is protected monument maintained by Archaeological Survey of India.

Rani ki Vav, Patan Rani ki vav is an intricately constructed stepwell situated in the town of Patan in Gujarat, India. It is located on the banks of Saraswati River. Rani ki vav was built as a memorial to an 11th century AD king Bhimdev I. It was added to the list of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites on 22 June 2014.

It helps students to learn about their local history, to provide shared opportunities to reminisce, to learn about cultural heritage, to develop new skills and develop a sense of civic pride

• Pithora Art

o A Pithora is a living testament of an ever changing ethos exemplifying highly enriched Folk Art Culture of Gujarat. It was originated from an ancient ritualistic tradition of mural paintings initiated within tribal beliefs and customs in the region of Chhota Udaipur and Vadodara district. The Pithora contains elements drawn from oral history, tribal legends and fantasy, stunning horses, birds and animals, hills and topography. The Pithora murals still continues to hold its place of pride and high ritual in tribal society today The main objective of the workshop was to make aware the students about the various art forms of Gujarat and its history so that they learn various techniques of the art and how to make nature colors and to exhibit the arts on innovative theme.

• One Day Cycle Ride to Ambapur Step-well o The step-well of Ambapur is a Hindu “water building” in the village of

Ambapur, close to the state capital, Gandhinagar. The stepwell was built in the 15th century by Queen Rudabai Vaghela as a funeral monument to Ranjeetsinh Vaghela. The stepwell or ‘Vav’, as it is called in Gujarati, is intricately carved and is five stories in depth. Such step wells were once integral to the semi-arid regions of Gujarat as they provided basic water needs for drinking, washing, and bathing. These wells were also venues for festivals and sacred rituals. Selected students were taken to Ambapur Step-well on Cycle. They cycled total 23.62 km during the cycle trip. The objective behind the trip was to promote and encourage responsible cycling, to spread the awareness about cultural heritage and to promote non-motorised transport. Cycling brings many benefits for cyclists and also for the wider community:

o Fewer car journeys, so less pollution and less road congestion o Improved health and fitness o Quieter, safer neighbourhoods o Cycling is fun and sociable

RANK CEREMONY OF PROF. NIGAM DAVE, DIRECTOR OF SCHOOL OF LIBERAL STUDIES, PDPU On Wednesday (30th August, 2017), Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University became the first institution in the country to make NCC Exposure compulsory and it was one of its unique achievements. The ceremony was graced by honorable Chief Guest - Major General Subhash Sharan, Additional Director General-NCC Gujarat, Diu & Daman, Dadra Nagar Haveli Directorate, Professor T Kishan Reddy, Director General-PDPU, Brigadier Pem Tshering, Group Commander NCC, Ahmedabad Group, Senior NCC officers, ANOs, Faculty members, NCC cadets & students. NCC is considered as a subject in this institution and is also given the same level of importance as given to other subjects. Purpose of this initiative was to spread the awareness about NCC and its Motto – “Unity & Discipline” amongst youth, promoting the message of Importance of NCC and nation building and to encourage maximum students to partake NCC activities. This initiative was taken by the Director of School of Liberal Studies - Prof. Nigam Dave. It was appreciated by the university and the NCC Gujarat directorate. For this excellent vision and to promote the NCC, Prof. Dave was conferred with the rank of “Honorary Colonel” by honorable Chief Guest Major General Subhash Sharan, Additional Director General NCC Gujarat, Diu & Daman, Dadra Nagar Haveli Directorate in the presence of all the NCC cadets and students, PDPU staff and faculties and all the invited Officials of NCC. His active interest right from the inception of the university to start NCC activities in 2012, PDPU has agreed the decision to introduce “Exposure to NCC” as mandatory subject for first year students at SLS. Total 535 students are there in first year students in 2017. “The country will have to develop three strengths to advance on the path of progress and development - Economic, Military, and Nation Building. By joining the NCC, students develops from a young person to a trained and disciplined young man.” - Major General Subhash Sharan, ADG NCC Gujarat, Diu & Daman, Dadra Nagar Haveli DTE.
