Pancreatic Islet
What is
pancreas??
pancreas
It is a large gland in body that secrete hormones.
The cells that make up of pancreatic islet.
Also known as “islet of langerhans”
It is part of two different organ system
-Endocrine system
-Digestive system
Con’t…
There are 3 main cell in the pancreatic islet :
beta cells, which secrete insulin and amylin
alpa cells, which secrete glucagon
delta cells, which secrete somatostatin
Location…Whole a located in the epigastric and left hypochondriac regions and its right part lies across the bodies of L1 to L3 vertebrae.
It runs transversely across the posterior abdominal wall behind the stomach, from the duodenum to the spleen, sloping upward from right to left
It is approximately 12.5 – 15cm long and weighs from 60 – 100gm.
Location..
Structure...
(1) head of pancreas, (2) uncinate process of pancreas, (3) pancreatic notch, (4) body of pancreas, (5) anterior surface of pancreas, (6) inferior surface of pancreas, (7) superior margin of pancreas, (8) anterior margin of pancreas, (9) inferior margin of pancreas, (10) omental tuber, (11) tail of pancreas, (12) duodenum
Function of Insulin..
Purpose:-Regulate blood glucose (sugar) in the normal range.
Action:-Forces many cells of the body to absorb and use glucose thereby decreasing blood sugar levels.
Secreted in response- High blood glucose
Secretion inhibit by- low blood glucose
Function of Glucagon…Purpose:- Assist insulin in regulating blood glucose (sugar) in the normal range.
Action: Forces many cells of the body to release (or produce) glucose (increasing blood sugar).
Secreted in response to - low blood glucose
Secretion inhibit by - high blood glucose
SomatostatinPurpose:- Regulate the production and excretion of other endocrine hormones
Action:- produce by hypothalamus to inhibit insulin, glucagon, gastrin, and other endocrine hormones
Secreted in response to - High levels of other endocrine hormones
Secretion inhibit by- Low levels of other endocrine hormones
summaryResponsible for the endocrine function.
It is a large gland in body that secrete hormones.
Secreted the major hormones in the endocrine system
