Anaglyph (with color glasses) Two views are redred/cyancyan, amberamber/blueblue or magentamagenta/greengreen coded First cinema movie in 1922 Strong quality limitations with color
Stereoscopic displays with glasses (e.g. side by side) Two half HD pictures displayed for the left and right eye Use current HD broadcast for transmission of 3D content Polarizing and shutter technology for TV and glasses Technology is ready, but missing broadcast standard
Stereoscopic displays with glasses (Full HD 3D) Two HD views are displayed for the left and right eye Polarizing and shutter technology for TV and glasses Technology is ready, but currently few Blu-ray movies available

H960 x V1080 1 Good Good Currently most used solutionfor 3D broadcast (DVB-S)
- “Side by Side” is good for both Interlace and Progressive sources.- Horizontal resolution 1/2
H1920 x V540 1 Good Fair - “Top and Bottom” tends to occur image degradation for interlace sources.- Vertical resolution 1/2
H1920 x V1080

Panasonic 3D
Why Panasonic didn´t employ 2D3D upconversion in VT20!• Current quality level not satisfying
• Risk of consumer´s misperception of 3D
• Health related issues
• No control of content
• Could harm creative and commercial success of real 3D

3D Picture evaluation - Conditions
Conditions for perfect picture evaluation
1. Same picture size of both TV sets!
2. LCD vs. LCD or PDP vs. PDP!
3. Compare TV set in cold and warm status (~1 hour)
4. Same source for all TV sets (output similar?, HQ HDMI splitter?)
5. Correct test environment e.g. distance and angle to TV set!
6. Picture setup before starting comparison!
7. Setup picture in correct order1. Brightness2. Contrast3. Colour (skin colour)4. Sharpness5. Overscan
1. Select perfect test picture (e.g. Burosch Audio-Video-Technik)

3D Picture evaluation - Execution
1. Black levels support image depth
Panasonic AVC Langen Development Centre (PLDC)Arne Wild
13
2. Uniformity issues
Backlight bleeds or hotspots in 3D image work as a reminder to our brain, that it watches a flat surface
3D Picture evaluation - Execution
Panasonic AVC Langen Development Centre (PLDC)Arne Wild
14
3. The known viewing angle
Edge-lit LED TVs still suffer severe horizontal AND Vertical Viewing angle issues, that decrease 2D and 3D picture quality drastically

• Shutter glasses are made of Liquid Crystal panels
• Like LCD-TVs those rely on polarization of light
• If you turn the glasses, there will be a mess within the polarization planes
3. A new viewing angle

3D Picture evaluation - Execution
• Cross talk between left/right or right/left eye, because of LCD response time in the glasses.
5. Cross talk
