2014 Panama Canal Centennial Medal
Modeled after the Panama Canal Completion Medal, the Panama Canal Centennial Medal commemorates the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Panama Canal. The medal was struck for the centennial celebration at the University of Florida. The George A. Smathers Libraries are leading a series of events and exhibits related to Panama and the Canal beginning on August 15, 2014, and continuing throughout the 2014-15 academic year.
The obverse of the centennial medal replicates the obverse of the completion medal, depicting the figure of Columbia with outstretched arms resting on globes of the eastern and western hemispheres connected by a ribbon stating Oceani Intersed Colombiad Coniungunter (Columbia Unites the Oceans). At the top, another ribbon is inscribed Prosperity To All Nations.
The Canal Zone Seal is on the reverse side of both medals, but the text for the Panama Canal Centennial Medal reads as follows:
Commemorating the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Panama Canal to the commerce of the world. This medal bearing a serial number is one of 200 issued for the centennial celebration at the University of Florida and represents a likeness of the Panama Canal Completion Medal carried on the vessel making the first passage through the Panama Canal on August 15, 1914.
The bronze, 1.75-inch medal, commissioned in 2014 by the Executive Council of the Friends of the Panama Canal Museum Collection at UF, is being presented as a gift to those who donate at least $100 to support centennial exhibits and events at the University of Florida. Funds raised will also be used throughout the year and beyond for long-range exhibits and continued work toward preserving the history of the Panama Canal.
1914 Panama Canal Completion Medal
On August 3, 1914, the Panama Railroad steamship Cristobal completed an unofficial ocean-to-ocean passage through the Panama Canal carrying 50,000 consecutively numbered Panama Canal Completion Medals, representing the entire issue.
The medals were later distributed on August 15, 1914, to heads of state, members of the diplomatic corps, government officials and other dignitaries aboard the SS Ancon on the first official transit; to members of the press covering the historic crossing; and throughout the world to representatives of church, science, industry and labor.
The medal design was suggested by Elizabeth Rodman, cousin of Capt. Hugh Rodman, U.S.N., superintendent of marine transportation, Isthmian Canal Commission. It was struck by John F. Newman Co., New York. The text on the reverse side reads as follows:
Commemorating the opening of the Panama Canal to the commerce of the world. This medal copyrighted and bearing a serial number is one of 50,000 carried on the vessel making the first passage through the Panama Canal as authenticated in a certificate signed by (signature) Geo. W. Goethals, Chief Engineer and Chairman, Isthmian Canal Commission.

Panama Canal Museum Collection at the University of Florida
The Panama Canal Museum was founded in 1998 by former residents of the Panama Canal Zone who were dedicated to preserving the history of the American era of the Panama Canal. Over a 14-year period in Seminole, Florida, through generous donations by hundreds of loyal supporters, the museum’s impressive collection expanded to more than 16,000 historical objects and was revered as a “repository of memories” for those who had experienced life in Panama and the Canal Zone.
In July 2012, the museum pulled down the shades on its brief existence and transferred its collection to the University of Florida, where it is being maintained and preserved by highly dedicated professionals using state-of-the-art conservation and digitization methodologies to ensure its availability for students, researchers and generations to come.
Many items in the collection have already been digitized and made freely available online. Select items from the collection can also be seen in person at various exhibits organized by the University of Florida Smathers Libraries to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Panama Canal.
