Dear PASCV Members, Dear PASCV Members, Our organization continues to be in an important process of evolution, as is the field of clinical/diagnostic virology. ASM will assume full organizational responsibility for the annual Clinical Virology Symposium starting with the upcoming 2015 meeting. (April 26-29, 2015). This major change in the organization of CVS has forced us to think about our identity as a Society. As a result of this process, I think we are emerging with a stronger sense for the purposes of PASCV. We will continue to be intimately associated

with CVS, including holding our Molecular Virology Workshop (April 25, 2015) and our Society Annual Business meeting in conjunction with CVS. Steve Specter will serve as Chair of the CVS Program Committee, the rest of which consists of other PASCV members assisted by ASM staff. PASCV members will serve as session conveners and speakers, in addition to invited experts not associate with PASCV. We are also thinking about our identity apart from CVS. We will continue to exist as an entity separate from ASM. However, the two organizations will continue to work closely together. Planning for joint activities was discussed at a meeting between PASCV leadership that took place at ASM headquarters in Washington in September. PASCV attendees were President Greg Storch, Secretary-Treasurer Kathy Stellrecht, President-elect Alex Valsamakis, Immediate Past-President Christine Ginocchio, Past President Angie Caliendo, Council Member Ben Pinsky, Workshop Organizers Randy Hayden and Melissa Miller (Melissa who participated by phone is also a Council member), and Past-President and Workshop Organizer Rick Hodinka.

Connie Herndon represented ASM. Specific areas of collaboration that were discussed included educational programs, fundraising, advocacy, and outreach to virologists in Latin America. We recently conducted a membership survey to learn what members wanted from the Society. The number one area of interest was educational material. Other points cited were networking and advocacy. We plan to explore developing webinars related to relevant topics in clinical/diagnostic virology. Discussion about recording and distributing Molecular Virology Workshop sessions is also underway. We have now formed four Committees: Education (Co-Chairs, Diane Leland, Mike Loeffelholz, Alex Valsamakis), Advocacy/Press Relations (Co-Chairs, Matt Binnicker and Melissa Miller), Fundraising (Co-Chairs, Susan Novak-Weekley and Alex Valsamakis), and Membership/Nominations (Chair Ben Pinsky) that will work to implement activities in each area. Members who are interested in participating should contact the appropriate Committee Chair. Email addresses for the Chairs are available on the PASCV website under the listing of Society Officers (www.pascv.org). Our main priority in advocacy is to provide comments regarding the FDA’s proposal for regulation of Laboratory Developed Tests. This effort will involve the Executive Committee (President, Past-President, Secretary-Treasurer, and President-elect as well as the Advocacy/Press Relations Committee. Anyone who is interested in helping should contact me or the Committee Co-Chairs. We hope to increase our interaction with virologists in Latin America. In this regard, we plan to team up with the ASM Ambassadors Program, which has representatives in most Latin American Countries. A meeting between PASCV leaders and Latin American Ambassadors is planned for the ASM General Meeting in June. Contact me if you will be at the General Meeting and are interested in participating. I attended the European Society for Clinical Virology (ESCV) annual meeting in Prague in September 2014. In addition to attending scientific sessions, I attended their business

meeting and had discussions with President Elizabeth Puchhammer and number of other officers. The Pan American and European Societies have numerous joint interests and much to learn from each other. There is interest in joint educational programs and other joint activities. We hope to have the ESCV President or another officer attend our meetings on an annual basis. A major change for PASCV is bringing on a part-time Administrative Director of Member Services. The person who is very competently filling that role is Jess Warner. Jess worked for ASM as Program Coordinator, where she oversaw the programming of ASM meetings including CVS during its transition to ASM. Jess has already made great progress in updating our membership database. She is working with ASM to ensure that registration discounts for the two meetings are appropriately given to current members. She is also serving as liaison between PASCV and ASM, and providing administrative support for the President, the Council, and the committees. She will be present at CVS to assist with registration and meet other needs of PASCV members. Please take the opportunity to get acquainted with her. One of the things Jess is doing for PASCV is organizing our social media presence. We are represented on Facebook, Linked-In, and Twitter. Members are encouraged to submit appropriate content. Contact Jess at [email protected]. Finally, the finances of PASCV are strong. We hope to maintain this with strong membership and good attendance at the Molecular Virology Workshop. I am happy to hear from members about ideas for the Society. My best regards to fellow virologists. Gregory Storch MD

Message from the CVS Chair Steven Specter, Ph.D.

The 30th Clinical Virology Symposium was held April 27-30, 2014 at Daytona Beach, FL. Feedback from attendees indicates that the meeting was very well received. This was the 1st year that the American Society for Microbiology took responsibility for meeting logistics and there was no change in the manner of operation of the meeting. Attendance was similar to the last few years with approximately 1050 registered. Attendees were present from more than 30 countries with approximately 12% of those present being international attendees. The exhibits were equally well supported this year with 60 companies exhibiting. In addition the Molecular Virology Workshop had 264 registered attendees. This year we had a new format for the Molecular Workshop, with a session on Saturday only from 8 am to 3:30 (6 contact hours). The new format was well received. There were numerous highlights at both meetings. Notable among the topics presented were: discussions of MERS and Ebola, a late breaker presentation on the recent tick-borne phlebovirus, Heartland virus, in Missouri, a presentation of the new and highly effective treatment for hepatitis C, as well as several other outstanding presentations.

Message from Connie Herndon Director Strategic Alliances American Society for Microbiology Discussions between ASM and Dr. Steve Specter regarding the transition of the Clinical Virology Symposium began in 2012. The meeting was well known and well respected by the scientific community and we have been honored to add this to the ASM Meetings portfolio. During many of the

transition discussions there was a focus on the importance of maintaining the excellent science delivered at the meeting, but of equal emphasis was the importance of maintaining the unique culture of the event. The significance of the location, the benefits of existing networking opportunities and the basic feeling of “family” was shared by the majority of attendees. During the two years of transitioning the meeting, ASM strived to preserve these core values and provide services that would enhance the attendee’s experience but not impact the culture. In this initial year of having full responsibility for the meeting, ASM continues to strive for these same goals. Therefore, there will be no significant changes to the meeting in 2015; however, there are some programmatic highlights: The deadline for abstract submission is February 24, 2015. However, if you will be applying for a travel award you must submit your abstract and supporting materials by February 1, 2015. For more information regarding travel awards, please visit our website at http://www.clinicalvirologysymposium.org/index.php/abstracts/travel-awards In honor of Dr. Sheik Khan, the Sheik Khan Memorial Lecture will be held on Monday, April 27 at 9:30am. As many of you will recall, Dr. Khan, a presenter at the 2014 CVS, lost his life to Ebola while working in Sierra Leone earlier this year. Dr. Heinz Feldmann from NIAID, Hamilton, Montana, will present the inaugural lecture on Ebola: Plight of West Africa. On Sunday, April 26 at 10:00 am there will be a point/counterpoint presentation on FDA Regulations of LDTS - A Laboratory and Industry Perspectives. Alan Mertz of the American Clinical Laboratory Association in Washington, DC and Andy Fish of AdvaMedDx in Washington, DC will be the presenters for this timely topic. An unexpected but extremely beneficial result of the CVS transition has been the partnership ASM has started with PASCV. There are obvious areas of mutual interest and ASM is very interested in pursuing joint projects in the future. Through strategic discussions, the potential for collaboration in

4

areas such as education, and outreach to virologists in Latin America has been identified. As mentioned in the President’s Letter, there is an effort to coordinate a meeting of the PASCV Leadership with the ASM Ambassadors representing Latin America during the 2015 General Meeting. The main points of discussion for this meeting include the potential for a relationship with PASCV (benefits and expectations) and how to establish contacts in each of their countries. In addition, as ASM ramps up its online educational opportunities in 2015, consideration will be given to partnerships with organizations such as PASCV in providing targeted programs. ASM anticipates another successful CVS in 2015 and we thank the PASCV Leadership and Members for your continued support of the meeting. In addition, ASM looks forward to a growing relationship with PASCV that spans beyond the meeting to provide continuous value to the clinical virology community.
