Five homes delight in Mills College annual house tour

the floor, throughout the house. The ownerloved the exposed concrete underneath andhad it finished to emphasize the cracks. Thecracks even coordinate with the gray-and-white granite of the high kitchen counter.

Most of the counter tops are stainless steel,with a black granite backsplash behind thecook top. The owner considers this the onlyerror because it creates a dark space. “I leavea light on 24/7,” she said.

The new kitchen demanded modern appli-ances, including Gaggenau stove and cooktop, Sub-Zero refrigerator and a built-inMiele espresso machine. A pair of Fisher &Paykel dishwasher drawers sit in the lowerplastic laminate cabinets, flanking the stain-less-steel sink. Brushed nickel pulls andfaucets complete the modern look.

The biggest challenge in the living roomwas dealing with an off-center “tiny andbrick” fireplace. Moving it to the middle ofthe wall would run about $30,000, the ownersaid, so she pursued alternative solutions.Soon she spotted a black granite and stain-less-steel fireplace surround in a magazineand handed it off to Peterson. He took theidea and ran with it, creating an asymmetricalfacade that ran closer to $15,000. “I do lovemy fireplace,” the owner acknowledged.

Once the kitchen was opened up, Petersonwas asked to take on the master bedroom andbath. Again, walls came down, this time cre-ating a walk-through bathroom with nodoors. The shower floor is slate, as are thesurrounding walls. No shower curtain is re-quired to protect spillover onto the plasticlaminate cabinets and stainless-steel counter

top. And if a little water splashes on theblack toilet, no problem. The owner keepsthe lid down.

Boxy closets were replaced with a wall ofcloset space, behind translucent glass doors.One wall is set at an angle: On one side is thebed, on the other is the shower.

To bring in even more light, skylights wereadded to the kitchen and master bathroom.

So far, the second bedroom is virtually un-touched, just painted gray to blend with therest of the house. In the future, a planned sec-ond-story addition will supply a third bed-room.

Before the house was built in the 1970s, itwas part of a larger Pedro de Lemos-de-signed estate. Remnants still exist in brickwalls, a gate and a barbecue with inlaid Mex-ican tiles. The owner inserted a more state-of-the-art grill into the de Lemos brickfaçade. “I like the old with the new,” she said.

Landscape designer Nancy Favier broughtin metal fencing that is corroding over timeto blend with the bricks. Metal sculpturesand a birdbath, along with a red canvasshade, highlight the outdoor room outside thekitchen.

“Every room has access to a courtyard,”the owner said. “In this climate, who couldask for anything more?”

with coved ceilings and hardwood floors, afamily room carved from an old laundryroom, and both a lady’s and a gentleman’sstudy;

• a completely remodeled home with mod-ern, yet warm kitchen, bonus room with astone floor and master bedroom with a Julietbalcony;

• a home that balances tradition with to-

day’s living needs, with touches such as newwainscoting, custom molding and Frenchdoors, as well as contemporary square sinksin the master bath;

• a renovated 1950s ranch, with comfort-able furnishings reflecting the owners’ tasteand collections. Even the master bedroomboasts collectibles and distressed cabinets.
