I n 2001 when Agnes Moser was a 41-year-old mother of two teenagers she decided to enroll in the Interior Design Program at Cañada College in Redwood City. A native of Switzerland

who had lived “on and off” in the U. S., Moser says she did love being an elementary school teacher, but she wanted a career that would feed her artistic and creative nature.

Moser now has her own interior design firm, Senga Interior De-sign, in San Mateo.

When you think about the skill set necessary for a design profes-sional you might put artistic sensibility at the head of the list. Not so, said Professor Nancy Wolford, coordinator of the program.

mercial Design. “I was thrown into the deep end,” she said, explain-

ing how she began her own business long before she completed the program. “An article appeared in the newspaper, and I was listed as one of the resources,” she said. With this publicity, she was “in business over-night.” Luckily, she had already taken the Professional Practices class and had such necessities as contracts in her binder.

Moser started with small jobs — “low budget, down-sizing, staging and color consultation,” she said. She also found that her internship with a kitchen and bath firm led to referrals.

“While a student I discovered a totally different side of myself by being the chapter president of the student branch of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID),” Moser said, adding that she developed leader-ship skills. She also relished networking.

“I am the sole proprietor of my business, but I’m a very social person. Without networking you’re on an island,” she said.

Moser also appreciated the annual Student Career Forum held at the Furniture Mart in San Francisco sponsored by the Peninsula ASID. “We had two days of professional speakers and there were also design competitions,” she said. “It links the school to the real world.”

Wolford stresses the real-world approach. “We have an advisory committee made up of professionals in the field. They keep us in tune and are helpful in revising courses.” The advisory committee was a driving force behind establishing the Green/Sustainable Design cer-tification established two years ago.

“We’re the only community college in the state that offers that certification,” Wolford said, describing the program that stresses not only use of energy-saving ap-pliances and fluorescents, but also practical touches

such as adding more windows. Environmentally friend-ly materials that renew, such as bamboo, and recyclable materials such as real linoleum (not vinyl) are also rec-ommended. “Government agencies are requiring these standards,” she said.

Karen Rush is 44 and one year away from finishing her program at Cañada in three years. She has B.A. and M.A. degrees in art history and worked in the high-tech industry as a sales and marketing manager for about 10 years. “Then I decided that I wanted to go into business for myself, and to combine that with my creative back-ground,” said the Mountain View resident.

Rush spent a year deciding before choosing Cañada because it is affiliated with the NKBA and also has the residential and commercial design programs.

She devoted one internship to a build/design busi-ness, and another with a kitchen and bath design firm that also does home design.

“I got a good feel for the rhythm and flow of a con-struction site,” she said. Wolford emphasizes that her students need to know how to converse with contrac-tors.

One of Rush’s favorite classes was Color Theory. “With color we tend to work on intuition,” she said. “This class teaches the science behind that. It opens up new possibilities and makes you likely to be more daring.”

In addition to the internships, students take on proj-ects. They are given a budget and the basic requirements of the client. “We get calls from all over. The projects vary from a book-store remodel to design concepts for a church,” Wolford said.

Wolford is also proud of the “intelligent design” built into the courses. Such features as counters of different heights, lever handles on doors, wide corridors and ac-commodating widths on doors not only make homes accessible for the aged, but also create comfortable homes.

When Wolford remodeled her own kitchen she found it helpful to bring in a designer. “You lose perspective when it’s your own home,” she said. “It’s more difficult to see the alternatives.” ■

W hen is a garden like a kitchen and a garden-er like a chef? I have

been watching a lot of great cooking videos lately. Classics such as Julia Child and Jacques Pepan and young energetic ones such as Jamie Oliver and Mario Batlai.

In many ways, gardening like cooking is a matter of tech-nique, materials and personal style. Here are the tips:

1. Classic methods of gardening like classic techniques in cooking last because they work. Double digging, com-posting and good pruning habits never go out of style.

2. Traditional tools do their job well and are worth the investment. Like a good knife in the kitchen, good pruning shears and a well-made trowel are used depend-ably for years. I like the Felco Number 2 shears and have found any of the cast-steel or aluminum trowels better than cheaper welded ones.

3. Some plants never go out of style. Geraniums still provide year-round color and crocus is still a wonderful fall-blooming bulb.

4. Hard work and simple living make for a full life with plenty of good memories when we grow old.

5. Eat what you grow and grow what you eat. A couple

of Swiss chard plants and four or five herbs can transform a meal into a delicacy.

6. Learning some tricks in tool handling can save your back and hours of unnecessary toil. Learn ergonomics and good posture before picking up that 15-gallon plant.

7. New plants like new foods make for an exciting and interesting garden. Visit nurseries often. Check out An-niesannuals.com and reneesgarden.com for what is new and different.

8. Working fast is fun and can get a lot done in a short time. Pick a project and see how fast you can get it over with. Chopping weeds and planting a new flowerbed can be done in minutes but can be put off for months with the accompanying guilt.

9. Try something you have never seen before. I would start small like a pot on my deck with a flower combi-nation that is unique — maybe combining desert with tropical plants knowing that you only water one side of the pot.

10. All in all, gardening gets you outside, making your garden into an extension of your home. Outdoor rooms, where you spend time and entertain friends always make for a better life.

Good Gardening. ■Garden coach Jack McKinnon has been a gardener for 35 years, and worked in the Sunset Magazine gardens for 12 years. He can be reached at 650-879-3261, or by e-mail at [email protected].

NOTICE OF PETITION TO ADMINISTER ESTATE OF:VINCENT T. BOYLE1-07-PR-161024 To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent creditors and persons who may otherwise be interested in the will or estate, or both, of VINCENT T. BOYLE, also known as VINCENT TAYLOR BOYLE.

A PETITION FOR PROBATE has been filed by: CELIA ANNE BOYLE in the Superior Court of California, County of SANTA CLARA. THE PETITION FOR PROBATE requests that CELIA ANNE BOYLE be appointed as personal rep-resentative to administer the estate of the decedent. THE PETITION requests the decedent’s will and codicils, if any, be admitted to probate. The will and any codicils are available for examination in the file kept by the court. THE PETITION requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act. (This authority will allow the person-al representative to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to inter-ested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administra-tion authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority. A HEARING on the petition will be held on September 13, 2007 at 9:00 a.m. in Dept. 15 of the Superior Court of California, Santa Clara County, located

at 191 N. First St., San Jose, CA, 95113. IF YOU OBJECT to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney. IF YOU ARE A CREDITOR or a contingent credi-tor of the deceased, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within four months from the date of first issuance of letters as provided in section 9100 of the California Probate Code. The time for filing claims will not expire before four months from the hearing date noticed above. YOU MAY EXAMINE the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as pro-vided in Probate Code section 1250. A Request for Special Notice form is available from the court clerk. Attorney for Petitioner: /s/ Barbara J. The Palo Alto Weekly publishes obituaries about people who lived in, or played a prominent role in, the community.

Obituaries are written by staff writers, based on information provided by mortuaries and/or family members. Due to space limits and other reasons, we may not include all the information a family wishes. Some families choose to write their own memorial announcements, then purchase space to publish it.

The Palo Alto Weekly handles funeral announcements for a small fee based on length of text. Photos may also be included.

For information call 326-8210, ext 221 (Blanca)or email [email protected]

• The Palo Alto Weekly is adjudicated to publish in the County of Santa Clara.

• Our adjudication includes the Mid-Peninsula communities of Palo Alto, Stanford, Los Altos, and Mountain View
