The new SMAC Gallery has opened in Woodstock – smack in the heart of Cape Town’s expanding art and design strip. The new SMAC Gallery in the Palms Design and Lifestyle Centre is sure to become a must-see art destination in Cape Town. Museum-like in scale, the space offers limitless opportunities for impressive exhibitions, from painting and sculpture to video, installation and performance. The new gallery aims to attract a wide range of visitors. Gallery Director Baylon Sandri says: “We look forward to presenting unique and innovative exhibitions now that artists will have far less restrictions than they would have in a conventional space.”The 1200m2 gallery is set within a converted section of the old Baumann’s biscuit factory and retains some of its original features, such as the fully restored cast-iron grid floor and 9 meter high ceilings, in some areas.Other features include private viewing and storage areas, a board/lecture room and an outside deck area with beautiful views of Table Mountain and surrounds.SMAC opens with two concurrent exhibitions by established South African artist Johann Louw and Angolan artist Délio Jasse.

The Palms moves with the times

‘It’s been a challenging, yet exhilarating first three months at the helm of one of Woodstock’s oldest dames, and I would like to wish everyone a very happy and safe Festive Season!

The response to the first Chronicle was rather overwhelming and it was exciting to announce the winners of the first Palms Competition at our very own Palms Market on Saturday the 29th No-vember 2014.

We would also like to take this opportunity to welcome two fantastic additions to The Palms. I’m sure you will be blown away by both the prestigious SMAC Art Gallery, and Siyabonga Ceramics, whose story exemplifies true entrepreneurial success! These additions, as well as our eclectic mix of retailers, offers and adds much value to our ever changing landscape, with many exciting ventures planned for 2015.

Here’s to another illuminating edition of what we at The Palms are all about, watch this space… ‘

art is not a way out. you havE to havE a lovE and Passion for what you do. if you don’t, it will show in your work.

the mAn behind the brAndFrom humble beginnings in the township of Gugulethu, Siyabonga grew up sur-rounded by creativity. With a father and two brothers who were passionate about art, Siyabonga’s love for painting began at an early age.

Siyabonga

ColleCtive WiSdom at Piér rabe eCleCtiC

Piér Rabe Eclectic focuses on beautiful functional objects from the 20th Century. Integrity of design is paramount, because good design is good design, whether in a piece from the 1790s, or the 1970s.

One of the most exciting aspects of the world of antiques and art is the opportunity to uncover exquisite and rare items, daily.

Most of these items are to be found at auction houses that have well researched and beau-tifully catalogued sales. Alas, prices in this context are often of an ‘exquisite’ nature too!

Occasionally, however, a fabulous piece is found in the most unlikely of places.Recently, on a Piér Rabe weekly round to one of the auction houses specialising in regular household (read second hand) sales, a mountain of worthless items were piled on an Art Deco writing desk, practically obscuring it.

A glimpse of the table, and years of Piér Rabe experience gave a hint of its worth and it was soon confirmed to be a rare 1920s Birds Eye Maple ladies’ writing desk, made by Hamp-tons of Pall Mall, London. It’s believed that only one similar item is available at a specialist dealer in London – at a whooping R45 000.

With little interest in the table, Piér Rabe was able to acquire the item at a good price and can in turn offer it to local collectors at a very modest R25 000. From junk stand to fabu-lous rand-hedged investment, the journey of this piece epitomises a Piér Rabe day. Why not start a journey of your own with Piér Rabe today?

Siyabonga ceramicsAt school Siyabonga would be the designated chalk board drawer in his class, draw-ing maps of the world for all his peers – places that he would one day visit thanks to his extraordinary craftsmanship.

In 1998, Siyabonga enrolled at the College of Cape Town where he studied Art. He was introduced to ceramics in 1999 and his love affair with this specific skill grew from there. Siyabonga won a few prestigious awards for sculptures and posters he designed and graduated as the best N2 student in his first year.

“I don’t think about a design before I start. I let the clay talk to me and together we create magic”After college, Siyabonga found work in Kalk Bay but after 4 years he decided to get back to the books and further his studies; focusing on Business Management and Skills. This gave Siyabonga an opportunity to freelance – both nationally and inter-nationally; giving him the competitive edge he needed to succeed.

“Art is not a way out. You have to have a love and passion for what you do. If you don’t, it will show in your work.”

Every piece is uniquely decorated by free-hand and includes African themes inspired by the sunset, desert and sea of the Mother land. The ceramics are stoneware fired to 1220 degrees Celsius and glazed with a lead-free transparent solution, making the products oven proof, microwave and dishwasher safe. The Siyabonga Ceramics shop & studio are situated at The Palms Lifestyle Centre in Woodstock, Cape Town.

“I’ve arrived! That moment when everything stands still and you can feel the air in your lungs. That’s where I am, it’s not just the perfect destination. Although a private island 10 minutes from Mahe does make me feel like an exotic queen. The villa at Sainte Anne’s is amazing, I’ve already been to the Spa and used my personal outdoor shower. Thank you Tripos for all your help with my honey-moon.” Tracey, newly married.

“Thank you, thank you, thank you. I’ve received my visa and can visit my daugh-ter. I don’t know how I could’ve done this without you and your team. Please share the chocolates between everyone” Sally, first time grandma.

“I can’t tell my son not to Mountain Bike, but for every trip the rest of his life, I promise you, he will always buy travel insurance. Thank you for helping him get back to South Africa. Both arms are still in plaster but he is much happier having the family around, at his beck and call!” Jonathan, relieved father.

“Did you organise the weather for us too? We managed to have three perfect jumps, then the snow lay down a powder that kept us on the slopes for a few days. Paul loved the train from Zermatt to St Moritz. You were right about hiring ski gear, it worked out much better. Thanks again for your advice and help.” Paul and Rupert, ski and paragliding enthusiasts.

“Is there a way that we can stay longer?” Everyone having a good holiday. Our clients speak for us.

gonsenhAusers: Contemporary Rug Collection by Peter Gordon for Gonsen-hausers. With pattern making a strong comeback in interior design, third-generation rug dealer, Charles Gonsenhauser, was keen to create a collection that celebrates its return. The obvious choice for Charles was local trend forecaster and interior designer, Peter Gordon. Peter was strongly influenced by geometric and linear patterns that are right on trend, whilst his colour inspiration came from a pallet of fashionable blues, naturals and a highlight of rich maize yellow. “I’ve always loved taking traditional styles and giving them a more modern twist, using colour, scale or simplifying its detail,” Peter explains. A traditional floor tile inspired the Honeycomb rug, although Peter increased the scale of the design to make it a perfect foil for contemporary furniture. The Linear Rug, with its electric blue jagged lines, was loosely based on an ethnic design, but again the scale makes it modern and new. Owners, Da-vid Coleman and Marc Fourie, specialise in hand-made beer, served in a unique venue that creates an intimate beer affair. Fermentation tanks are within reaching distance and watched over by a striking Falko1 graffiti-piece on the wall.

‘Life’s too short to enjoy average beer,’ say the Riot Factory crew. That’s why they make it their mission to make only great beer.

Riot Factory has two house beers on tap: The Session Golden Ale and Valve. If you don’t like Jimi Hendrix, don’t drink Valve beer. The hops are turned way up on this one, striking a balance between a rich malt and bitterness.

The Palms @ Woodstock radiates ‘Olde World Charm’ having evolved from being a biscuit & bread factory in the early 1900s to a modern lifestyle centre. Hosted in this enchanting building, it is no surprize that a visit to the Palms Market on Saturdays 9am – 2pm feels like an outing to one of Europe’s village piazzas.

Not only does this market have soul, but the food is also prepared with heart and passion – thereby distinguishing itself from many other markets in Cape Town. The Palms Market has become a meeting place for friends and families and linking up with new acquaintances who become friends.

Worth getting poetic about? Bernard Fielies, one of the regular assistants at The Palms Market, wrote a lovely poem expressing his emotions, which Mynie Grove regarded worthy of transforming into a ‘rap’ song (right).
