Greater Detroit's Original Cultural Events Weekly • Thursday, September 27, 2018 DOWNTOWN MONI TOR Autumn in Detroit's Palmer Park truly begins when hayrides once again travel the colorful trails at People for Palmer Park's annual Harvest Festival on Saturday, September 29 from 1-4 p.m. The much-anticipated event is free and open to the public. More than a century ago, Senator Thomas Palmer and his wife Lizzie Merrill Palmer would invite guests to enjoy their Log Cabin Farm, drink freshly pressed apple cider, and enjoy the harvest. Palmer donated the land in the late 1800’s to the city of Detroit to serve as a park "for the good of all." In honor of the harvest and in celebration of Senator Palmer’s generous legacy, the area across from the Splash Park on Merrill Plaisance, adjacent to People for Palmer Park's community garden, will once again be filled with autumn festivities and free family fun. Farmer John and his Barnyard Express show and petting zoo (pictured, above) will return. Some of the season's bounty will be shared: apple tasting (with five different varieties of heirloom apples); apple cider and donut holes for the first 500; corn grilling, and pumpkin picking. Arts and crafts activities and pumpkin decorating will be held in PFPP's big blue art tent, and a special squash display will demonstrate the wide variety of pumpkins and squash that grow in Michigan and how they look inside and out. Also on hand will be a tug-of-war, sack races and other old-fashioned games. And, of course, hayrides through the largest Virgin Forest in Greater Detroit. Palmer Park is located just off of 7 Mile and Woodward Avenue in Detroit. Palmer Park's Annual Autumn Harvest Festival

Last Chance to See Star Wars Costumes at the DIATake a unique journey into the

Star Wars™ universe as charac-ters are brought to life through a dramatic presentation of more than 60 original costumes, with the Detroit Institute of Arts' ex-hibit, Star Wars™ and the Power of Costume, closing on Sunday, Sep-tember 30.The exhibit will closely examine

the captivating process of cos-tume design for iconic outfits fea-tured in the first seven films of the Star Wars saga — from Queen Amidala’s lavish gowns to Darth Vader’s imposing black armor and the bright white of the Empire's Stormtroopers (pictured). Directed by George Lucas, the

first film in the iconic Star Wars saga was released in 1975 and has since been ensconced as the pri-mary reference for most modern 'space operas.'

Lost & Found: Rare Rediscovered Photo Exhibit Lost & Found: Photographs from the DIA’s Collection is a fascinating

look at rediscovered photographs (referred to as found photography) rescued from attics, resale shops, online sources and the Detroit In-stitute of Arts’ archives.Lost and Found includes photographs from the 1860s to the 1970s

by unknown and amateur photographers that provide a glimpse into the city of Detroit, themes associated with the automobile and por-traits that immortalize family members and everyday people from all walks of life. Included are images from carnival photo booths (pic-tured, circa 1950-'60), family albums, snapshots and commercial por-trait studios.

Suite 1B-South(313) 962-4555

In recent days we have lost a leader and mentor of Greater Detroit and the op-era world. Dr. David DiChiera (pic-

tured) was an inspiration for all who were connected here in any way to singing and music, opera or teach-ing. He was fortunate to have

been able to bring to frui-tion his impressive accom-plishments, including the designing of the opera house in Detroit as well as being able to set up a stable man-agement team for the future. He will be missed even as he remains an integral part of our own psyches and life di-rections. The new season has al-

ready begun as we continue this week. On this coming Thursday, September 27, UMS in Ann Arbor will be presenting the Philadelphia orchestra at the Hill Audi-torium, 7:30 p.m. Yannick Nezet-Seguin is conduct-ing, and Lisa Batiashvili is the solo violinist in Tchai-kovsky’s violin concerto. In addition, the program in-cludes Rachmaninoff’s sym-phonic dances, Op. 45, and a Suite Marnie by Nico Muhly. The Metropolitan Opera has commissioned Nico Muhly to compose Marnie for its 2019-20 season, based on Winston Graham's 1961 novel that was adapted into an Alfred Hitchcock movie. The plot centers on a wom-

an who embezzles from her employer, gets caught and is blackmailed to marry one of her bosses. On Friday, September 28

& Saturday, September 29, 7:30 p.m., at the Ant Hall at Planet Ant, 2320 Caniff Street, Hamtramck, Opera MODO will be presenting the world premiere of Evan Snyder's A Capacity for Evil, starring John Riesen, Gillian Cotter Riesen, Christopher Hodson, and Evan Ross. In-

Foot Health Today

DR. JAMES SCHELBERG

OBESITY AND FOOT PROBLEMS QUESTION: I have been overweight all my adult life and this doesn’t seem likely to change in the near future. The extra weight is killing my feet. Is there anything I can do about it?

ANSWER: The feet may be weakened by carrying too much weight over a long period. It’s also possible that excessive walking, running or standing result in weakened feet. The important thing is to make sure that the foot is properly supported. When ligaments that hold the bones in their natural position become strained, the foot

PODIATRIST

and ankle can become fatigued or swollen. Supportive devices inserted in shoes may bolster feet and help relieve symptoms of weakness. Regular foot exercises may help strengthen muscles and improve foot function.

spired by the tradition of Sherlock Holmes, the detec-tive tale, A Capacity for Evil, is based on an original story conceived by the composer Evan L. Snyder, and by tenor John Riesen. The story fol-lows Daniel, a famed 1930's private eye, who, with help from his partner Doyle and his fiancée Angelica, works to unravel a series of grisly religious murders occurring on New Year’s Eve before the unknown murderer can realize the full scope of his perverse aims. As tensions rise and time runs short, the bonds between the three friends are tested - the lim-its of human compassion and trust tried against the dark ordeals of this imperceptible murderer. A Capacity for Evil was a

winner of the 2017 Frontiers Competition through which selections were performed as a part of the Fort Worth Opera Festival in May 2017.Saturday, the 29th, will

be a festive event featuring operatic superstar Renee Fleming at the Detroit Opera House at 6:30 p.m. Featured with her will be the MOT

orchestra conducted by Ste-phen Lord. This special eve-ning will include an appear-ance by Victoria Jaiani and Dylan Gutierrez of Chicago’s renowned Joffrey Ballet per-forming a pas de deux from Swan Lake. Another event taking place

this coming Saturday at 5 p.m. is a jazz performance dedicated to the preserva-tion and restoration of the historic All Saints Episcopal Church in honor and mem-ory of Dr. Alwin Barefield. Performing are A. Spencer Barefield (guitar), Marion Hayden (bass), and Gay-elynn McKinney (drums). All Saints Episcopal Church is located at 3837 W. Seven Mile Road, in Detroit. Tick-ets are at allsaintsdetroit.org/jazz-concer t-t icket s-only/. On Sunday, Sept. 30 at 3

p.m., under the auspices of CMSDetroit, the Pacifica string quartet will be ap-pearing at Varner Hall, at Oakland University. They will perform string quartets by Beethoven (B-flat major), Bartok (No. 4), and Mendels-sohn (No. 3 in D major).
