“We give glory to You, Lord, who raised up Your cross to span the jaws of death like a bridge by which souls might pass from the region of the dead to the land of the living. We give glory to You who put on the body of a single mortal man and made it the source of life for every other mortal man.”

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONLater this week, the Chrism

Mass is celebrated in every cathedral in the world in preparation for the Easter Triduum. Only a bishop

can consecrate chrism, pure olive oil infused with rich fragrance, so this liturgy is a sign of the unity of the local Church and the bishop’s ministry to all who will be baptized and confirmed in our parishes in the coming year. Chrism is also used in the ordination of priests and bishops and the consecration of new altars. Two other sacramental oils, the unscented olive oil for catechumens and for the sick, will be blessed in the same liturgy and transported carefully to every parish by the beginning of the Triduum.

Remember when Noah’s dove returned with the sign of the world’s rebirth? The dove carried an olive branch, a pledge that God was breathing the world to life again. Yet olives require human nurture. Olives are inedible unless they are cured by human labor. Olive trees grow on sunny slopes, away from the shade of city walls, so they can only be properly tended, cured, and laboriously pressed in peace time. The Chrism Mass with its olive oils expresses God’s deepest desires for us, and our resolve to place our lives in service to God’s saving, healing, loving plan

The Cross is the word through which God has responded to evil in the world. Sometimes it may seem as though God does not react to evil, as if he is silent. And yet, God has spoken, he has replied, and his answer is the Cross of Christ: a word which is love, mercy, forgiveness. It is also reveals a judgment, namely that God, in judging us, loves us. Remember this: God, in judging us, loves us. If I embrace his love then I am saved, if I refuse it, then I am condemned, not by him, but my own self, because God never condemns, he only loves and saves. – Pope Francis

THE STORY OF OUR REDEMPTIONWe begin the final week of Lent with these familiar

readings. This year, we hear the Passion from the Gospel of Luke. These readings for Palm Sunday and the Passion used to be read on successive Sundays. Now they are combined into a single feast, so that we may see the whole sweep of the glory and the suffering played out. Jesus accepts the adulation of the crowd, the foreshadowing of his glory in the Resurrection. He bids farewell to his disciples in his last Passover, and forgives his tormentors as he dies on the cross. Later this week, we enter the Holy Triduum of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday, when the whole story of our redemption will play out once again.

TODAY’S READINGSGospel at the Procession with Palms — Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem (Luke 19:28-40).First Reading — In spite of my sufferings I am not disgraced. I am not put to shame (Isaiah 50:4-7).Psalm — My God, my God, why have you abandonedme? (Psalm 22).Second Reading — Christ emptied himself, and God filled this emptiness with exaltation (Philippians 2:6-11).Gospel — The account of Christ’s passion according to Luke (Luke 22:14 — 23:56 [23:1-49]).

ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL CATHOLIC CHURCH

FULLY HUMAN, FULLY DIVINE Francis of Assisi emphasized an imitation and love of

the humanity of Jesus, without needing to first “prove” or worship his divinity (which Jesus never told us to do). In most of Christian history we have emphasized the divinity, omnipotence, omniscience, and “almightiness” of Jesus, which makes following him—or loving him—largely unrealistic. We are on two utterly different planes that are rather hard to connect. A God who is “totally other” alienates humanity and creation.

I doubt this will surprise you, but many Christians are not really Incarnational Christians. That’s not a moral judgment; it’s a description. Many Christians simply believe in “a Supreme Being who made all things,” and their Supreme Being just happens to be Jesus (not recognizing that he was anything but almighty!). He was the available God¬-figure in Europe and the Middle East, so we pushed him into that position, while ignoring most of Jesus’ concrete message: that power and powerlessness can and probably must coexist. Jesus is actually a “third something,” fully human and fully divine. This is hard for the dualistic mind to grasp or even imagine; it seems like a self-canceling system, a contradiction in terms, an irreconcilable paradox. In Byzantine icons and many later paintings, Jesus is shown holding up two fingers, indicating, “I am fully human, and I am fully divine at the same time.” This paradox is just too much for the rational mind to grasp. Maybe only art and prayer can help us understand it!

For most Christians today, Jesus is totally divine, but not really human. When we deny what Jesus holds together, we can’t hold it together in ourselves! And that’s the whole point: you and I are also children of heaven and children of earth, children of God and children of this world. Both are true simultaneously, which defies all reason and logic. The Incarnation overcomes the split in us and creation.

Christianity is saying that we need a model, an exemplar, a promise, and a guarantee (words used in Pauline letters) to imagine such a far-off impossibility. For us, that living model is Jesus. In Scholastic philosophy, we call this an “Exemplary Cause”; which is exactly how Jesus “causes” our salvation. He models it and it rubs off on us when we gaze long enough. Salvation is not a magical transaction accomplished by moral behavior or joining the right group. The only salvation worthy of the name is a gradual realization of who we are already in this world—and always have been—and will be eternally. Salvation is not a question of if nearly as much as when.

Fr Richard Rohr, Center for Action and Contemplation

Palm Sunday of the Lord Passion of the LordONE WHO SERVES

In the long form of the Passion from Luke’s Gospel, Jesus refers to himself as “the one who serves” (Luke 22:27). He was chiding the apostles who were arguing about which one was the greatest disciple. This reminds me of today’s second reading from Paul’s letter to the Philippians. He says that Christ “emptied himself, taking the form of a slave” (Philippians 2:7). Jesus is not just being humble here. He gives us an example of how far God will go for love of humanity.

I suspect the apostles were confused when Jesus talked this way. Jews considered the firstborn son to be the one to inherit the bulk of the family estate. The youngest would get the least. Yet he tells them to be like the youngest: expect little reward for what you do for others. Now the apostles might have thought, “Sure, I can do that. I’ll preach about the Kingdom of God for free. Then I’ll really look important and holy.” So Jesus reminds them that the world looks at the person being served as more important than the servant. But he is one who serves, and if the apostles are to be leaders of the church, they will need to be servants, too. Why? Because that is how God comes to the people—as a child born in a manger, a man who feeds the hungry but goes for forty days in the desert without food for himself, a man who washes the feet of his own disciples, and who heals the sick but accepts the suffering of crucifixion.

In the Passion according to Luke, Jesus heals one of the men sent to arrest him. He even makes friends of those who were enemies, Pilate and Herod (Luke 23:12). Barabbas, a murderer, is set free so Jesus can be crucified. As he is led to the cross, he consoles the women who weep for him. And even on the cross, he is the suffering servant who asks the Father to forgive those who are killing him. He accepts the faith of the criminal who is also being executed and promises him a place in Paradise.

With the example of service that Jesus shows toward those who put him to death, can we at least be “one who serves” those around us? Can we at least forgive those who hurt us—maybe even pray for our leaders, especially the ones with whom we disagree?
