The First Lesson Zechariah 9:9,10

9 Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem!

See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

10 I will take away the chariots from Ephraim and the war-horses from Jerusalem, and the battle bow will be broken.

He will proclaim peace to the nations. His rule will extend from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth.

❶ How can you rejoice on Palm Sunday worshiping from your home?

❷ Why do we need a King like Jesus as we worship Him today?

❸ How is King Jesus extending His rule to the ends of the earth?

A word from your pastor about this Word of God

The prophet Zechariah proclaimed Palm Sunday with pomp and circumstance when he announced Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem. Certainly, this king looks like an unlikely monarch. Zechariah prophesies that the royal majesty will ride on the back of a baby donkey, revealing His humility and gentles. At the same time, this king comes with awesome power and might: doing what is right and having the power to save. The way He brings salvation is unique. In order to bring peace to the nations, He doesn’t use weapons of war. How the people of Ephraim and Jerusalem—citizens of war torn countries—must have longed to be rid of their chariots, war-horses and bows! This king, however, ushers in a new world order by offering Himself. The peace that king Jesus brings extends across the globe and lasts for eternity!

The Second Lesson Philippians 2:5-11 5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: 6Who, being in very nature God,

did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7but made himself nothing,

taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.

8And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death—

even death on a cross! 9Therefore God exalted him to the highest place

and gave him the name that is above every name, 10that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,

in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,

to the glory of God the Father.

A word from your pastor about this Word of God

What an amazing King we have! Our gentle, lowly King didn’t enter the world with trumpets and fanfare, nor did He walk the earth with the regal royalty of the typical rulers of the kingdoms of the world. Instead, He displayed His divinity with His perfect life and saved His people with His innocent death. Paul invites us to emulate Jesus’ attitude. Instead of doing all that we can to make our name and renown known, as Christians, we do all we can do make Jesus’ name known to others. Keep your eyes on Jesus this week and direct others’ eyes to Him, too!

❶ How is Jesus different from earthly kings?

❷ How will you confess the name of Jesus while quarantined at home?

The Gospel Matthew 21:1-11

As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. 3 If anyone says anything to you, tell him that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.”

4 This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: 5“Say to the Daughter of Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you,

gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’ ” 6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt, placed their cloaks on them, and Jesus sat on them. 8 A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted,

“Hosanna to the Son of David!”

“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”

“Hosanna in the highest!” 10 When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked,

“Who is this?” 11 The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in

Galilee.”

A word from your pastor about this Word of God

Look at Jesus! What majesty! What humility! What a Savior! We give no higher honor to Jesus than believing in Him and confessing Him as our Messiah Who did everything to fulfill God’s plan of salvation for sinners. As you fix your eyes on Jesus, add your voice together with the crowds:

Hosanna in the highest!

Sermon Text Mark 15:1-20

Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law and the whole Sanhedrin, reached a decision. They bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate.

2 “Are you the king of the Jews?” asked Pilate. “Yes, it is as you say,” Jesus replied. 3 The chief priests accused him of many things. 4 So again Pilate asked him,

“Aren’t you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of.” 5 But Jesus still made no reply, and Pilate was amazed. 6 Now it was the custom at the Feast to release a prisoner whom the people

requested. 7 A man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the uprising. 8 The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did.

9 “Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?” asked Pilate, 10

knowing it was out of envy that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him. 11

But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas instead. 12 “What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews?” Pilate

asked them. 13 “Crucify him!” they shouted. 14 “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!” 15 Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus

flogged, and handed him over to be crucified. 16 The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and

called together the whole company of soldiers. 17 They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him. 18 And they began to call out to him, “Hail, king of the Jews!” 19 Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him. 20 And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him.
