GOSPEL: Mt. 21: 1-11 “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.” FIRST READING : Is. 50: 4-7 “The Lord God is my help, therefore I am not disgraced; I have set my face like flint, knowing that I shall not be put to shame.” RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Ps. 22 “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?” SECOND READING: Phil. 2: 6-11 “Rather, he emptied himself, tak- ing the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” GOSPEL ACCLAMATION: Phil. 2: 6-11 “Christ became obedi- ent to the point of death, even death on the cross. Because of this God greatly exalted him and be- stowed on him the name which is above every name.” GOSPEL: Mk. 14: 1-15, 47 or 15, 1- 39 “The Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ.” SCRIPTURAL TOPICS: tri- umph/passion, glory/suffering FOCUS: The passion of our Lord Jesus Christ. The triumphal entry into Jerusalem paved the way for the resurrection. REFLECTION: “Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ: in all my trials and sufferings you have given me the strenth to stand firm; in your mercy you have granted me a share of eternal glory.” Irenaeus, Greek Prelat “Be humble in this life, that God may raise you up in the next. Be truly moderate and do not punish or condemn anyone immoderately. Be gentle so that you may never oppose justice. Be honorable so that you may voluntarily bring disgrace upon anyone. Be chaste so that you may avoid all the foulness of lust like the pangs of death.” St. Stephen of Hungary “Consider whether the business of the world could be carried on with- out the figure of the cross. The sea cannot be crossed unless the sign of victory, the mast, remains upright. Without it there would be no ploughing, nor could diggers or mechanics do their work without their cross-shaped tools. Humans are distinguished from beasts by their upright posture and the way they can extend their arms. The very nose through which we get our breath is set at right angles to the brow, fulfilling the prophet’s words, ‘Our Lord Christ is the breath before our face.’” St. Justin Martyr APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: The liturgy should begin outside the church or at least at the entrance to the church with the blessing of palm branches and holy water, followed by the first gospel reading. Choir members could mix with the assembly in a gathering procession to assist in song. Empha- sis on Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem throughout the entire lit- urgy would be inappropriate. The main focus today is the passion of Jesus Christ. Sample General Intercessions: Introduction—My brothers and sis- ters, Jesus fulfilled the Father’s will by giving his life on the cross. Let us pray to God, the Father, who leads us to resurrection: • For the world in which we live that God may give us health and peace through the blood of Christ; • For believers and unbelievers every- where: that the suffering and death of our Lord Jesus Christ may lead us to the glory of rising again; • For the world in which we live: that God may instill within us awareness of service as the path of love; • For our families and community: that God give us the courage to reach out to those who need our love. Preface: for Passion Sunday Solemn Blessing: See blessing for the Passion of the Lord. Or Fifth solemn blessing. R.C.I.A. We are challenged in our daily lives to use the power of love over the power of exclusion and rejection. Jesus was not a fearless warrior storming Jerusalem. His strength was in love for God. • How does this approach to life run contrary to contemporary secular values? Jesus chose to give himself up to be crucified. He could have used force to rescue himself but chose submis- sion. • What does this theme of submis sion mean to you now? Children’s Liturgy of the Word Imagine waiting for a great leader or famous person to arrive. What would you feel like if you saw Jesus? Jesus entered Jerusalem sim- ply and humbly. FIRST READING: Ex. 12: 1-8, 11-14 “This day shall be a memorialfeast for you, which all your gen-erations shall celebrate with pil-grimage to the LORD, as a per-petual institution.”RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Ps.116 “Our blessing-cup is a com-munion with the Blood of Christ.”SECOND READING: 1 Cor. 11:23-26 “For as often as you eat thisbread and drink the cup, you pro-claim the death of the Lord until hecomes.”GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:Jn. 13: 34 “I give you a new com-mandment says the Lord: love oneanother as I have loved you.”GOSPEL: Jn. 13: 1-15 “'Master, areyou going to wash my feet?' Jesusanswered and said to him, 'What Iam doing, you do not understandnow, but you will understandlater.'”

SCRIPTURAL TOPICS:new commandment, eucharist,glory, salvation, service, humility,love

FOCUS: “If I, Teacher and Lord, have washed your feet, you mustwash each other’s feet.” By servingthe needs of others, we serve God.

REFLECTION: “Invisible in hisown nature he became visible inours. Beyond our grasp, he chose tocome within our grasp. Existingbefore time began, he began to existat a moment in time. Incapable ofsuffering as God, he did not refuseto be man, capable of suffering. Im-mortal, he chose to be subject to thelaws of death.” Leo the Great

“Love your neighbor without ex-pecting any return from him; whatyou do for him, Jesus counts asbeing done for Him.”

St. Catherine of Siena

“Jesus has made Himself the Breadof Life to give us life. Night andday, He is there. If you really wantto grow in love, come back to theEucharist, come back to that Ado-ration.” Mother Teresa

“It is easy to feel drawn to good, healthy people who have pleasantmanners, but that is only naturallove and not charity. A mother doesnot love her sick deformed child be-cause he is lovable, but because sheis his mother, and we must pray theHoly Ghost to put into our heartsthat selfless devotion which naturehas put into hers.” Robert Bellarmine

APPLYING THE READINGSTOTHE LITURGY: We communewith our sisters and brothers andwith God ultimately through JesusChrist, in body and blood. The celebration of the institution ofthe Eucharist and the remembranceof Israel’s Passover are but part ofthe overall theme of service. In the ceremony of the washing ofthe feet, we are not merely re-enact-ing history. The same applies for theliturgy itself; the ritual is a genuinegesture of communal solidarity. Thenew directives of the sacramentaryencourage Communion under bothspecies for this day. Heightened rev-erence for the entire EucharisticPrayer would be appropriate.Sample General Intercessions:Introduction—My brothers and sis-ters, through our Lord Jesus Christ,we are saved and set free, throughhim we find life and resurrection.Let us pray to God who reveals to ushow to love:• For the Holy Church, the bride ofChrist: that the world may know her byher love;• For the world in which we live: thatGod may instill within us awareness ofservice as the path of love;• For all those afflicted, sick, or lonely:that God may strengthen them throughHis love;• For our families and community: thatGod give us the courage to reach out tothose who need our love.Preface: for the Holy EucharistRoman Canon for Holy Thursday.

R.C.I.A.Loving service is the path to God, toeternal life and to happiness. We arehere to be of service to those whomJesus loves, that is all of us. By serv-

ing others we draw closer to Jesuswho through the Holy Spirit revealsGod to us. Let us meditate on howthe resurrected Christ comes to us:through the Eucharist, loving ser-vice, through prayer and the sacra-ments, through the love we see inothers, through the love we our-selves put into action.

Children’s Liturgy of the WordBy helping others we help our-selves. Talk about involvent as vol-unteers as a way of getting closer toJesus.• What do we have to gain by helping others?Make the observation that peoplewho really work at being helpful, often learn important things abouthow to live a happy life._______________________________________

FIRST READING: Is. 52: 13 - 53: 12“Who would believe what we haveheard? To whom has the arm of theLORD been revealed? He grew uplike a sapling before him, like ashoot from the parched earth;”RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Ps. 31“Father, into your hands Icommend my spirit.”SECOND READING: Heb. 4: 14-16; 5: 7-9 “Son though he was, helearned obedience from what hesuffered; and when he was madeperfect, he became the source ofeternal salvation for all who obeyhim.”GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:Phil. 2: 8-9 “Christ became obedi-ent even to the point of death, evendeath on a cross. Because of this,God greatly bestowed on him thename which is above every othername.”GOSPEL: Jn. 18: 1 - 19: 42 “ThePassion of Jesus.” Jesus an-swered, "You say I am a king. Forthis I was born and for this Icame into the world, to testify tothe truth. Everyone who belongsto the truth listens to my voice."

SCRIPTURAL TOPICS: silence, awe, The Cross, passion & death, salvation, triumph.

FOCUS: The Cross is the tree ofsalvation. Through Jesus’ obedi-ence to death, new life has arrivedfor all. His perfect love saves us all.

REFLECTION: Father,I abandon myself into your hands;do with me what you will.Whatever you may do, I thank you:I am ready for all, I accept all.Let only your will be done in me,and in all your creatures—I wish no more than this, O Lord.Into your hands I commend mysoul; I offer it to you with all thelove of my heart, for I love you,Lord, and so need to give myself,to surrender myself into yourhands without reserve, and with boundless confidence, for you are my Father.

Charles de Foucauld

“Hold out, be steadfast, endure, bearthe delay, and you have carried thecross.” St. Augustine

“The cross reminds us that there isno true love without suffering, thereis no gift of life without pain.” Pope Benedict XV

APPLYING THE READINGS TOTHE LITURGY: The cross in John’sgospel signifies the means to glorifi-cation. While the emphasis in thisliturgy is on the Cross, it is not ondeath but rather the path to the res-urrection. This is part of the Easterexperience, simple and contempla-tive, yet with the awareness of thePaschal mystery, that God chose us,through the death of his Son, to beheirs to God’s kingdom. The liturgyfor Good Friday consists of threeparts: the liturgy of the Word, theveneration of the Cross, and the dis-tribution of communion. The sym-bols of cross and communion, ofpassion and triumph, of death andnew life could be symbolically inter-woven through music selection andenvironmental design. This is theonly celebration of the year in whichthe altar is left bare.

Sample General Intercession:• For the sick and dying, that they will letGod’s love comfort them and guide themtoward new life in Christ;• For all sufferers, may we all let God’s lovecomfort us and guide us toward new life inChrist.• For our families and community: that Godgive us the courage to reach out to those whoneed our love.• For the world in which we live: that Godmay instill within us awareness of service asthe path of love;

R.C.I.A.Through the giving up of ourselveswe come closer to experiencing theessence of life. In our dying to thesmall things we learn to live in aworld of life and death, sufferingand joy, with God.The fervor of the early Christians isneeded today in a world grown coldwith selfishness. Let us read the

Good Friday

teachings of these saints with ap-preciation for the desperate timesthey lived in, and their views ofactive Christianity.

Children’s Liturgy of the WordThe death of Jesus can be hard forsome children to talk about. Per-haps a child has recently experi-enced a death, or perhaps the idea ofdeath, one’s own death, has comeinto the child’s awareness. Tell thechildren God loves us, and we musthave faith in Him. Tell them God ismerciful, not cruel. We will see ourloved ones again. Tell them Jesustold us the way to heaven is to love._______________________________________

From the Exsultet

For sorrow seeks for grace,And love releases mortal fear, And death renews the race.

Death seizes on the bitter barb, And binds herself thereto,And life is clad in deathly garb, And life shall rise anew. When death through earth has made its path, Then all the dead shall rise,And death, consumed by heavenly wrath, In groans, and lonely, dies.

St. Ambrose

“God passionately desires and ar-dently yearns for our salvation. Noth-ing is greater than this: that the bloodof God was poured out for us.” Pope John Paul II

APPLYING THE READINGS TOTHE LITURGY: There are ninereadings and eight psalm responsesassigned for this night, recountingthe history of God’s communionwith people. From Genesis to theResurrection there is a continuity ofrevelation. The account of the cross-ing of the Red Sea must be included.Keep together the historic progres-sion of God’s salvation._______________________________________
