The effectiveness of the pre-treatment system is affected by the highly polluted wastewater streams from a palm oil mill which contain various suspended solid contents.

Secondary Wastewater Treatment pH Monitoring

For the execution of anaerobic treatment, the optimum temperature is 37° C. Hence, cool-ing process using cooling towers is needed before biological treatment because POME at this stage exists at a high temperature of 75 to 90°C. However, acidifying processes will occur as well, in which oil/grease is converted into fatty acids and consequently become short-chain organic acids via enzymatic reactions. Odour-generating substances are released at the same time which creates an unpleasant smell. Control of pH (at about 7-7.5) is important to avoid this problem.

FINAL EFFLUENT

Installing an ID-223 sensor in the final ponding system will continuously monitor the

discharged water and ensure treatment is running smoothly. A spill condition will be

detected and the operator notified, or the system can automatically stop the dis-

charge and contain the spill, allowing the operator time to take appropriate action.

The Leakwise ID-223 has three sub-models for different maximum water fluctuation capability:• ID-223/500 – up to 500 mm (19.7 in)• ID-223/2000 – up to 2,000 mm (6.6 ft.)• ID-223/2500 – up to 2,500 mm (8.2 ft.)

The PS-220 Analog Leakwise Controller is a power supply and signal processor that interfaces with a single (1) Leakwise ID-220 Series Sensor to report hydrocarbons spill/leak alerts, including layer build-up and thickness, to users via outputs interfaces for local or remote reporting.

The PS-220has a well proven reliability and is cost effective for a basic monitoringsystem. It can be AC or DC line powered.

Boiler feed-water is required to produce pressurized steam for sterilisation of loose palm fruit. Heat treatment destroys oil-splitting enzymes and arrests hydrolysis and autoxidation. Heat helps to solidify proteins in which the oil-bearing cells are microscopi-cally dispersed. The protein coagulation allows the oil-bearing cells to come together and flow more easily on pressure application. The moisture introduced by the steam acts chemi-cally to break down gums and resins.

Ideally, feedwater is supplied in a closed-loop system with stable and sustainable water quality. In reality, feedwater quality deteriorates:
