PALM ISLANDS

The Palm Islands(Atlantis) arean artificial archipelago in Dubai, United Arab Emirates onwhich major commercial andresidential infrastructures willbe constructed.

They are being constructedby Nakheel Properties, aproperty developer inthe United Arab Emirates.

They hired Belgian andDutch dredging and marinecontractor Jan De Nul and VanOord, some of the world'sspecialists inland reclamation.

The islands are the Palm

Jumeirah, the Palm JebelAli and the Palm Deira.

original of three Palm Islands.

PALM JUMEIRAH

The Palm Jumeirah is inthe shape of a palm tree.

It consists of a trunk, acrown with 16 fronds, and asurrounding crescent island

that forms an 11 kilometres(6.8 mi) long breakwater. The island is 5 by 5

kilometres (3.1 by 3.1 mi)and its total area is largerthan 800 football pitches.

The crown is connected tothe mainland by a 300-metre (980 ft) bridge andthe crescent is connectedto the top of the palm by a

subsea tunnel.

This project is 50 percent largerthan the Palm Jumeirah.

The project will include sixmarinas, a water theme park,'Sea Village', homes built on

stilts, and boardwalks that circlethe "fronds" of the "palm" andspell out an Arabic poem bySheikh Mohammed bin RashidAl Maktoum.

PALM DEIRA The Palm Deira is a

part of the PalmIslands, Dubai.

It was announced fordevelopment in

October 2004.

The first announceddesign was 8 timeslarger than the Palm

Jumeirah, and 5 timeslarger than the PalmJebel Ali, and wasintended to house one

million people.

PALM DEIRA Originally, the design

called for a 14 by 8.5kilometres (8.7 by 5.3mi) island with 41fronds.

Due to a substantial

change in depth in thePersian Gulf thefarther out the islandgoes, the island wasredesigned in May

2007. The project then

became a 12.5 by 7.5kilometres (7.8 by 4.7mi) island with 18

larger fronds.
