ASK THE WATERCOLOR DOCTOR by Carol Z. Brody NWS, TWSA

Question: I've been away from painting for a long time. I'd like to get back into it, but I don't know how or where to begin, and frankly, I'm somewhat afraid to start. What should I do?

Answer: I think that every artist has faced this issue at some point, I know I have! Doubts can creep into your mind about whether you can really paint at all, or if it's worth the struggle and bother. So I have several suggestions for you.

Of course you can always take a workshop to get yourself jumpstarted. But if you don't want to do that, here is another approach.

Speaking personally, here is the way that I handle the problem of being away from painting for a long time. I first take a good look at some of my completed works which were successful, and start preparing my mind to think in terms of watercolor. If you have some unframed paintings in a drawer, looking at these can give you a feel for the beauty of the actual medium, without the barriers of plexiglass and a frame. You will begin to appreciate the unique qualities of watercolor. It's quite a sensation and will help to get you excited mentally.

Then I take out some old piece which was a failure anyway, and I continue to work on it. Knowing I can't ruin it makes me less afraid to paint on it now. I might even experiment with a new technique or idea. At some point I begin to feel like a painter again! If you try this, ideas for your next painting, perhaps a better version of the one you're working on, will come to you , and you're on your way!

I do hope this helps you get over a slump. Remember, the more often you paint, the better you feel about it and the more fertile you mind becomes for new ideas. Good luck!
